At last a coherent vid. with clear and concise progression and great diction. The content was informative, logical and designed to assist. This was well worth watching.

I love that at 11:30, Kris crouches down by a very happy fern and actually whispers so he doesn't disturb the fern, which is probably having a little snooze. 😁

I pack leaves inside a plastic mesh cage around my tree ferns, I find it helps the trunk produce lots of new roots that grow in to the leaves and then in spring upon removing the leaves I find the trunks are nice and dark and really fuzzy with new root growth, I use poplar and maple leaves and never had any issues with mould. I highly recommend trying this if wanting to make the trunk fuzzier . Thanks for sharing Kris👍🏼

Great video, i bought mine too late in the season. Two fronds on a 5ft stump. One frond 7 inches the other 4 inches. A bit embarrassing when the neighbours are watching how my first year at gardening is going. To be fair to the sellers they did say they would replace if they dont grow next year, but by the time i can say these are not growing it could be late season again. My 2ft stump done great. I got that one earlier. Thanks for the info. Great show.

Hi Kris. Very interesting video. Interesting to hear about the timing of buying. I bought one October after a season in the nursery. About 5ft tall. Very small.fronds but 50% off so was worth a punt. After a slow start and a season of watering daily the fronds are lengthening nicely but some way to go. As you also found, my best tree ferns are the 4 much smaller ones planted together in a cluster. Almost 2m fronds and there looks to be baby ferns growing underneath. I absolutely love looking at the green fronds in the spring. Our coastal climate helps avoid most sustained frosts. Great video as always. Cheers

Great video. Unfortunately in Sydney, Australia we get some really hot days (35 to 40 degrees celcius) and the tree ferns suffer.

Great information! Thanks! Unfortunately we can't get these shipped here as big trunks like you mentioned. But I did find a small pot of one which I've had now for 4 years and its doing quite well. They are a beautiful plant for sure...

One of mine is 8ft nearly died in 2010 freeze has zero roots in pot , basically dead from the top 2ft down to soil. Still growing away medium fronds likes its seaweed feed. Good video btw 👍

40 cm in 7 years?! That's amazing growth from a Dicksonia! I've heard that they only grow around 2.5 - 3cm per year, and you've managed to achieve double that growth rate 😱 Do you have any tips and tricks to thicken up the trunks of tree ferns?
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 жыл бұрын
It's a slow process to thicken up the trunk by watering really well for several years so new growth is wider.

My tree fern seems happy is producing fronds of a good length, new ones about to start uncurling but the crown is getting smaller so I am not sure how many more fronds it can produce? is this due to not watering enough or how can we address this please Kris?
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS Жыл бұрын
It's due to general less good growing conditions, using not enough water and humidity plus cutting off older leaves early rather than letting them narrowly hang down.

@@YorkshireKRIS thanks is she saveable if we water more and leave the older fronds in situ? the old ones are still there now all brown and half snapped off when should we remove them?
@YorkshireKRIS

To add its pretty common though as its very hard to replicate the growing conditions from when it was growing in Australia

Interesting and informative as always, thanks for the help last time palm is looking much better. I'm looking to plant a Butia Odorata in my walled back, what type of soil mix would be best? I'm South East Ireland so much warmer climate- wise. -2/-3 is considered our worst here.

Hi Killan, You want something that drains pretty well but can hold on to lots of moisture. They don't want to be sat in water in winter, but need plenty of water in summer.

@@YorkshireKRIS Thanks Kris, the weather's been quite different here, for the past two summers we've had droughts. Would a mixture of sharp sand at the bottom and then john innes mixed with sand do the trick.?

Chris good vid again I’ve watched it several times as I’ve just bought one but I would like to know, do I keep watering even when it’s cold and likely to freeze at night , just wondering cuz I luv my fern more than my kids !! Just joking!!
@YorkshireKRIS

They'll need far less water when it's cold unless it's windy. Better not to water before a big freeze saying that we don't get prolonged freezes at this time of year so keep watering

Wouldn't removing the cup and saucer vine be beneficial to the tree fern? It would allow more rainfall to get to the trunk.🤔
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 2 жыл бұрын
The vine may actually help by preventing the trunk drying out so quickly.

Kris, what can I plant under a tree fern?
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 жыл бұрын
Bulbs, ground ferns, hostas. Plant within a couple of years of planting the tree ferns as the roots make it hard to dig.

Hi Kris Great vid, I have a dicksoniaantarctica which is in a large pot in our lean too and has not produced any frongs this year but has huge amounts of offshoots. Is this lack of fongs because of the offshoots and how can I propagate them please. Thanks
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 жыл бұрын
Extremely unusual to have offshoots but some tree fern species regularly do this. Are you sure it's a Dicksonia Antarctica and if it is are your sure they're not just seedlings?
@MrMatt131260

@@YorkshireKRIS Hi Kris Thank you for your reply It is definitely a Dicksonia Antarctica and the off shoots are like the runners that are coming out of the pot and trailing over the side as well. I will try and send a picture. Thanks
