Fun fact: "the world turned upside down" is the name of a real drinking song the British really did sing as they retreated from Yorktown.
@nicksmith20104 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. When I heard Yorktown for the first time, I immediately snapped back to history class years ago, thinking: wasn't that a real British drinking song?

This one song has so many layers of genius to it, from all of the historical details (like taking the bullets from their guns), to The World Turned Upside Down - if you see the show, you'd also see all the visual nuances layered atop the musical ones. You can study this many times and still be amazed at everything this song is packing. By the way, you skipped over an important detail that helped them win the battle of Yorktown.

sorry about missing that detail ! great song!

The chord notes in this and Hurricane are the same but switched around. This signifies Hamilton's overwhelming feeling that he's near death or feeling the same way that he does when he was on his island in The Dominican Republic.

If you like the subtleties of the electric guitar on this song, you have to checkout the sitzprobe the orchestra did in Puerto Rico. Alex Lacamoire (musical director) has the musicians each play the dance breakdown individually (piano, bass, then drums, etc.), and then all together at the end. You get a real feel for the texture each instrument brings to the song. That video is titled 'Hamilton - Yorktown Dance Break Sitzprobe (Puerto Rico).' Great series, cheers!

During the show, there is actually a constant vinyl crackle during this song, similar to "The Room Where it Happened", which represents the past. In this song, it symbolizes the hurricane, when Hamilton met death. He was in this kind of situation before, during that hurricane. In a way, he never left. Hamilton is constantly asking death for another day. Just one more day. This battle throws him right back because he now doesn't want to sacrifice himself to the fight.
@jeffy54824 жыл бұрын
The vinyl scratching is from the ableton. Scott Wasserman created it. I believe that the guitarist is the one who activates it all during the show.

Yay, more Hamilton. LOL at the comments about you pausing right in the middle of a funny line or some momentus dialogue 😂 But you’ll hear them all when you watch the film, someday! And yes, there is definitely a programmer under the stage for stuff like the keyboard samples. Re: the cursing, there are several but for Disney Lin-Manuel had to cut out 2 of the 3 F-bombs to get the rating he wanted.

Great reaction! I don't blame you for pausing on the good lines -- you can't possibly know what's coming up or what the next few lyrics will be! Plus, we watch these for your commentary on the instrumentation, not just a straight review of the story in the song (although I do always appreciate when you comment on the lyrics). Thanks for your insight, excited for the next one!

Is burr’s intro not part of the song? can’t remember... but yes you’re right! This song was us winning the revolutionary war. Huge moment on stage when it’s performed :) it’s also a bit easier to follow when everything is played out in front of you. Can’t wait for you to watch the show!
@jcompton85074 жыл бұрын
I think Burr's intro is before Guns and Ships...right?? which then leads straight into History has It's Eyes on You and the straight into Yorktown??
@everquestingknight4 жыл бұрын
Are you thinking of the "How does a rag-tag volunteer army ..." intro from Guns and Ships? It flows directly from that to History Has Its Eyes On You to this, so they kind of all feel like one song but are actually three different songs on the cast recording. I agree about this moment on stage, its such a big moment that I'm always surprised it doesn't go straight into intermission to end the first act.
@vvancleemput4 жыл бұрын
@@everquestingknight oh yes I was thinking about that intro! They blend so well I always forget where they are in the track list. and I totally agree! Nonstop is beautiful, I love how all the reprises come back, but it does feel like Yorktown would be a good place to stop act 1.
