I want to learn this martial art ever since I did some research on it when I was looking for a fighting style that best suits my personality. I'm not an aggressive person and prefer not to fight. But I love martial arts it's an art. Aikido is designed to defend to read your opponent and counter. It's about the mind and most importantly patience. Most masters have 25 years of training and experience, I never heard about it till I looked it up originally I was going to learn kendo. Plus my fav character in tekken asuka's fighting style is based off aikido so it automatically has a place in my heart.

This guy is the nearest thing I have seen to Gozo Shioda since Shioda himself. He is practically a clone, the movement is so eerily similar. And I absolutely promise his power is real. That doesn't mean his ukes aren't co-operating; it would be a lot worse for them if they weren't. It also doesn't mean he'd beat a skilled MMA fighter in a cage match. But woe betide the random person who doesn't know what they're doing who decides to have a go at him in the street, which is probably 98% of human beings.

Aikido is interesting because it looks almost unreal, couple that with the fact that the Internet is full of people who declare anything and everything to be fake and it's not surprising that there are plenty of skeptics here in the comments. My personal experience: I have been learning aikido for 8 years, I am now a brown belt sixth cue. I know from my experience that aikido does work on real life, as I asked my sensei about how effective Aikido would be against a real attack or sequence of attacks and she asked me to attack her and then flattened me. However, I also know that it takes a long time to reach that level; I myself am just starting to be able to use Aikido in real fights. This is probably why there are people who say they have experience of Aikido not working.

very nice aikido demonstration, more interesting and better than many others on KZbin. I liked the drills in the beginning to train reflexes against chains of punches and stabs/slices with a knife. This stuff should be done more in dojos! Moreover, sensei Thambu moves very well and is athletic! He performs many difficult moves.

BJJ, MMA etc have become sports. Once a martial school becomes a sport they adhere to rules. Aikido is a martial art. There are no competitions or tornaments in an art. And there are no rules dealing with a situation in the street. There is no need to show your "skills"or"street moves" to anyone if you have humility and love. I'd rather surprise a thug with a gentle sankyo or nikyo to give them a chance to walk away than knock their head off and have a death on your hands. I hope no one would want to live with that on their minds. Anyway, Great demonstration. Thambu Sensei is awesome. Raw beauty. Thanks for posting. :)

Nick Rasmussen No bro, you don't understand reality bro. I've been doing Aikido longer than you've probably been alive. It has its strengths and weaknesses. It's strengths lie more in character development and samurai style ju-jitsu. Throwing in good standup skills in boxing and kicking help make it a more rounded style to use to off set its setbacks. Looks like the other guy deleted my comment because he knew I was right.

You don't understand how to apply the art and adapt, apparently. You perform the technique you're presented with.
@forgottensailor2006
@forgottensailor2006 10 жыл бұрын
Techniques that might look cool in the dojo might not be applicable in real life. It has nothing to do with adapting, you have to know your opponent and environment. If I try to use an Ikkyo on a man who weighs 300lbs and knows basic fighting and that's all I've got (just Aikido), I'm in for a world of hurt unless I can get lucky somehow (which doesn't always win). Not all the way but there are some pretty retarded things taught in Aikido that we try to keep out of the style we teach at the dojo I work for. It's not rocket science or a magic either like some places paint it up to be. It's a great art and I love it but it has to get with the times. You change what sucks and make it work for the present.
@kendalisadouche
@kendalisadouche 10 жыл бұрын
If all you know is how to do ikkyo and you're up against a 300 lb. guy, yup you're in trouble. you'd only be maybe 5th kyu at that point and don't really know anything.

One of the best aikido demonstrations on youtube. Most of it is too fast for us to see exactly the technique, but we can get the general idea of the use of uke's movement against himself. The use of the jo to illustrate what you can do with only your arms was especially helpful. About comparison with MMA: remember that part of Aikido's philosophy is to avoid seriously injuring your opponent. Because of that the aikidoist has an extra burden compared to an MMA. But I would say that if you take an MMA and aikidoist of comparable skill levels in a real fight, the MMA would have a hard time even touching the aikidoist, because the latter is not trying to strike or grapple at all but just seeking to move through and be on his way. At least that's what I understand.

At about 1:19, choosing to drop low in the hope the attacker will flow over one's small shape seems a very risky choice. The attacker could catch on last second and plunge the knife into his back. Is this a recommended knife defense from a charging knife wielding opponent? I know it's a demo but that is the implication I get from watching. All in all amazing and adept!
@laumia6175

Well seen and well said Eze eze. I totally agree with your saying. This only moment shows it is a movie, fiction, and with a real opponent with a knife, surely you won't try such a move. I also practice aikido and I find such demo maybe impressive for naive people but totally unrealistic and even dangerous because, don't think you practice aikido and you can manage so easily an opponent with a knife...

In that technique you don't drop - you enter with your shoulder in the inner side of your opponent's knee... this is in fact a demonstration, but in a real-life application, the technique is designed to break the opponent's leg or dislocate the knee. People tend to state 'this is just a demonstration' as far as the uke goes, but it is also a demonstration for the tori. Several techniques need to be toned down for the uke's safety - Juji garami and shoinage come to mind.

I do have a lot of respect for martial arts. Can somebody explain to me the need of throwing themselves around? I would like to think that in order to complete the move ( hence , the demonstration ) without injuring the partner, the partner has to perform a controlled fall. Not letting go the kimono /arm with that kind of motion would surely result in a joint and ligament injury if not performing a controlled fall . Please enlighten me !!
@debitibus
@debitibus 9 жыл бұрын
One of the first things you learn in Aikido is to fall. They fall because they are trained to, and because they are smart. If you don't kneel in a kneeling movement, or fall in a falling movement, you can break a bone. That's because aikido does not uses strenght. It uses our arcticulations. Twist ir right and you can put someone in his knees with one single finger. And it is not a hiperbolis. My teacher did it to me in my first class.

There are many fake or self proclaimed aikido "masters" out there. Judging an entire martial art based on bogus examples is a bit strong. This guy obviously has some skills. Try to touch him in a street fight, and he'd break your arm (or worse). It takes years of practice to understand the mechanics of aikido. I'm 1kyu and I am only scratching the surface.

As with most Aikido throws force is not important. He moves such that the attackers lose their balance and simply fall. They then do breakfalls, so they don't land on their faces. It's basically the same effect seen in most of the techniques shown in this video, though this particular application with two attackers simultaneously is very advanced and technically difficult.
