Players will absolutely struggle in the upcoming Ashes of Creation Alpha 2 Test, but will that be a good thing, or a bad thing?

I no lifed UO so hard that every time I would dream it was from an isometric view point and animals had grey names written above their heads! I once logged into WoW around 10:30pm, a little while later my friend Cookie came home from work. He logged in we had some adventures together then he logged off to go to bed. It wasn’t until he logged in the following night after he got home from work and asked me how long I had been on that I realized I’d been playing for over 26 hours straight. It was in that moment I recognized I had an addiction. I went just as hard in Wildstar. Level capped in less than 72 hours after launch. I’m still torn on how I’ll approach Ashes at launch. But I’m certain I won’t have that kind of time to devote to Ashes and I’m kind of glad, but also sad about it. I won’t be able to keep up with my friends but I hope to get the full scope of the game with the time I do have available to play.

totally! my mom was so worried because I started playing 4story with my sister when I was 8 years old in 2008 and soon, like one or two months in I got so addicted, I mean i pretended to be sick just so I can play :D in the morning I would wait until everyone got out of the house and I was playing for 8 hours straight and when mom came home I used to turn of the monitor but it was so obvious my old PC was like a spaceship loud :D couple years later I had the same with Aion, the best community and my long time friend, who was only like 15 years older but we were good friends :D it was always him helping his girlfriend (now wife and mother of their children) and both of them helped me level up! :D such a blessed time lol, so much fun

I was playing classic hardcore WoW the other day (first time playing WoW in 17 years), and I totally forgot that there are few / no quest markers. Had to use cardinal directions to find caves etc. It was a struggle at times, but that struggle led to much more overall satisfaction, as I actually had to immerse myself in the world / engage with the environment. It also felt good when I found the place I was looking for. I also completely forgot about the lack of convenient infinite fast travel in the game. It was a bit frustrating at times running places, (especially without a mount) but my god did I feel like I was actually part of a huge world for the first time in an MMO in a while (Mortal Online 2 also gave that feeling). When I arrived to my destination, I found that I valued my time there. I valued my interactions with other players as who know when I will see them again and so on. I am all for Ashes being a struggle! Good vid Xillin!

Only parents that kick you out of the house is in America. Staying within family is much smarter, specially nowadays. You just save up much money between everyone, even your parents do. Why move out and live alone, "to experience life"... when everyone can have much money by living together as a family and splitting bills together, helping with house chores. This American mentality of, "once you're 18 move out" it's just stupid. In my opinion.

You ever thought that listening to those people is why the game is punchline now? I firmly believe that MMO players in general openly advocate for the things that end up making them leave games....even though they don't realize it. But in the end, you might be right. Time will tell.

Yeah, man. The struggle may be real, but I welcome it. I put games on the hardest difficulty because I respect the struggle. If you take a game, like Ark for example, and cheat code in all the best stuff... the game feels fun as hell, for like a day, maybe a week. But then you just feel done with those games. There's nothing left. When you have something and then there's the risk of you losing it without any clear way of getting it back, that's when games become equal parts thrilling and devastating. It makes you want to quit. With Ashes, they've established some control over that dynamic. I'm looking forward to A2. I'm looking forward to the struggle. :)

Hell even single player games I always want to play at hard or at the highest difficulty possible since it is really fun overcoming that challenge and adapting to it rather than making it easy and it becomes nothing at the end of the day.

I haven't bothered with gear in a game since TBC WoW. I decorate homes as my endgoal, and I enjoy logging in whenever I feel inspiration to do that. I think the hardcore gamers are out of touch with what casual gamers actually enjoy. And how many of us there are that don't find the struggle captivating at all. Gear has never excited me. It's not a driving force to log in. If it's hard to obtain, I simply don't play that game. I do log in for RP events for several hours at a time, but other than that... I have a career. I need my gym time. I need time to spend with my boyfriend and out in nature hiking. Beach vacations, etc. That all being said, Ashes catering to people who enjoy gaming 18 hours a day is perfectly fine. Games are free to provide whatever kind of experience the devs want them to provide. As long as stockholders are happy, the game will keep running. I love the visuals of Ashes so I hope they do what Conan Exiles did (provide assets in UE5). I'd love to make my own game setting with Ashes assets. That's way more interesting to me than the rat wheel of endlessly chasing gear stats.

I hope that the game is a struggle. That's what make any achievement feel rewarding. I pray that they do not put the coolest gear behind micro-transactions and take a good hard look at OSRS and FFXIV and understand why those games have a rising player base over the last 10 years compared to literally everysingle MMO that is out there right now. I hope they do a monthly sub to make money and keep everything else locked behind ACTUAL gameplay instead of becoming a pay to win or look cool MMO like most other games these days. If the game is a struggle and keeps things like they should be, I think it will be the most popular game of the times. Fingers crossed. Hope to see you in game some day :)

It's wild to me that people think back to games that were demanding enough that keeping up meant 18hrs a day, no job, no life and go "I miss that, I need that kind of game again." Gamers chasing nostalgia is often like a dog chasing a car, I don't think people will know what to do with it when they get it ...or they realize they didn't really want it. Not to mention how hard it will be for a game like that to survive in the modern market. And I don't just mean because people will on mass want and demand easier games, but most people can't fit timesinks like that into the rest of their lives anymore. I suspect there will be a lot more compromises on the delivery here than the game's biggest fans will suspect.

ICQ and UO... oh man that brings me back. MMOs out today do have some difficult content if you look for it. Stuff that can take months to complete. In ESO completing the latest released hardmode and trifectas in trials can be a real challenge. That said, they don't hold up to time. Once you get them, you'd only go back to help a friend get it. Wait long enough then power creep and nerfs takes the fun out of them. The gear can be mindlessly grinded in easier modes as well.

I disagree. People who enjoy full loot PVP are the extreme minority. EQ2, FFXIV, and WoW, all survived fine without full loot pvp. I agree there needs to be a challenge, but that can easily be done through interactive and challenging PVE content as well such as raids. Lost Ark also has some very engaging and high end PVE content. If Ashes becomes just another EVE/Albion, I won't be playing at all. Full loot open world PVP is a waste of time. Albion had a nice Arena system which I think would benefit any MMO. Allowing players to go in 3v3 or 5v5 in a capture the hill style PVP match. I think something like that could be nice for people that enjoy those things. Open world PVP is only beneficial to the no-lifers, and people with massive friends lists that run around 150 vs 1 ganking people or bullies that like griefing other players. I've played EVE, EVE Echoes, and Albion, in the end the open world PVP made me quit. My best memories were raids in EQ2 where 24 people had to work together and figure out mechanics. More people enjoy socialisation and challenging PVE content than open world full loot PVP. I would say a bigger problem with modern MMO's is all the streamers putting out mechanics and info before the game even launches, taking away from the exploration and discovery. Unfortunately we will never get that back.
@Xillin
@Xillin 10 ай бұрын
Just for the record, Ashes is an open PvP game (with punishment for those who randomly kill), but it's not a full loot game. You get to keep your gear, and depending on how you handle certain encounters, you could lose a small percentage of your gatherables (flowers, stone, wood, etc) or lose nothing at all. The point of this video was not that full pvp/full loot are good, but that having struggle and strife in a game generates value in your gameplay.

I discovered UO with the release of Renaissance, Felucca was empty, and if you did see another player, they killed you, and took your noob gear for no reason. Then complained no one was in Felucca. Then they added Skill Scrolls via World Events, and had the best only available in Felucca to entice players to go there, but then you'd face a 40 Red Zerg. So, players made money in Trammell and just bought them. Felucca remained empty. Then WoW released, and both Trammell & Felucca were empty. I still miss UO to some extent, it was my first MMO.

Man I had a whole essay as a response, but I ended up restarting my computer and forgot to hit send. This is such a huge multi faceted issue I could write up multiple articles discussing this topic. It's not like I'd expect people to read all of what I wrote before (or now) anyway. I will say, a lot of it comes down to time. You spoke of UO which I too spent countless hours playing. The primary "challenge" of those old games was mostly just "time". Who ever no life'd the hardest did the best. Skill wasn't really a factor and it wasn't really a challenge. I'll chalk that up partially to limitations of game engines, design, and networking of the late 90s early 2000s. Now games have unfortunately broken this even more and they not only waste your time, they have chosen to remove any challenges as well. It is the worst possible out come. They don't respect your time and intelligence, they are too easy, and they charge you extra for it. This is why I really enjoy Elden Ring. They have expertly captured the essence of respecting my time and providing a challenge. There are other games I could use as an example but we'll stick with this one. The problem with MMOs and traditional MMO design is they are often designed to aim to waste your time. They want you playing only their game for as many hours as possible. So instead of providing meaningful gameplay they sought to absorb you in as many mechanics as possible and stretching those mechanics to sap as much time as they can to keep you logged in. (stamina bars to move about the world, gather and craft; time gating in multiple systems including crafting, mana and health that take minutes or more to refill. Literally have you staring at your screen and just waiting. etc. etc) None of this provides excitement or challenge in the way a game like Elden Ring can. IMO the formula has to change... not just roll back to something of old. We're all wearing rose tinted glasses (hopium /copium) when we remember how good UO or vanilla wow etc were. They all have their issues and pitfalls and minus some organized raiding... never provided much challenge themselves. The challenge of old MMOs was time. If you were time challenged you didnt succeed and you quit. If you had 8 hours a day+ you were successful. I know a lot of people think they want old MMOs back, but you don't. Unless you've got the time you had when you were 18 and living with your parents it wont be the same experience. The game will require of you time that you cant give because its designed that way. This is fine for people who live off playing the game(Streamers/ youtubers), but not everyone else. What I want to open a discussion about is how to achieve that feeling we had "back in the day" while being realistic with the time a game asks of you. What can change in the MMO framework that keeps us wanting to log in when we can to spend some time, in this case, the world of Verra? I'll give a couple of thoughts. I think Nodes are a great step in the direction of keeping the world ever changing and fresh, but we wont know that till after some time testing it. I think capturing the journey over the destination feeling is supremely important. Removing the need to race to "end game" and the eventual "power creep" that always requires resets or stat crunches is a major problem worth addressing. Possible solution is to change how leveling and stats work. Move towards more horizontal progression styles that focus on building your skills and talents instead of an arbitrary level number that comes with flat stats. This would make gear all that more important as well... giving crafting and rare drops more prominence and meaning, and keeping gear relevant for long term. Ended up being an essay anyway. :/

I know it was extremely hated, but back in 2002 me and a friend made thieves in Ultima and i absolutely loved it. I got so much shit and made people so mad, lol. Thief was named The Lurker.

I like the vibe you're putting down. I want the realism and the challenge. And I want some decent gear and i want to feel strong and rewarded for earning the good stuff. I still wish PVP was more baseline class vs class so my skill wins out over their gear. but overall having the cool stuff due to me earning it and working with others will feel good again. or at least i hope thats the mmo AoC is building.

Just this morning in Classic wow Hardcore I had a conversation in chat about this very thing, how people need the challenge and the struggle , they will cry about it all the time but they crave it even if they don't admit it. Reason I was talking about it is because the server isn't as popular as it was when there was no official Hardcore server, everyone was using an Addon that blocked the auction house, mail, trading and grouping except for a one time dungeon run but it had to be with all Hardcore players...Now on the official hardcore server you can do everything just like a normal server except you are limited to one dungeon run per 24 hour period and of course you can't die...but the challenge of solo self found is gone..everyone can just group up for hard quest and breeze right through them..to me it's not the same..you can still use the hardcore add on if you want of course but I don't know how many do that.

I want to play this game so bad... I normally get frustrated with ease, but at the same time, struggling to beat hard content or just having a rough path in order to get good rewards, is PURE satisfaction. And guess what, that's life... fight for every accomplishment you wanna make. Hope Ashes of Creations follows what you said.

True to an extent, but griefers can and have ruined games. I actually like the original Everquest where all your gear was on your body and you had to retrieve it within a time-limit. I think that made things scary. If anyone could have looted your stuff, that would have been taking things too far for most people.

Yep, losing all the gear was rough. Good thing Ashes won't have that.

Im a grind Andy 😂 if you ask my friends they always say "once you start grinding a game you never get off 😑😑😐😐" because once i have my mind set on grinding, whatever im grinding for i will get 😤😤 in AOC's case i want to be a master animal husbandres, and i want to do raids and be able to defend in castle sieges. Those are my 3 things that im most looking forward to. So i gotta grind in multiple ways to benefit the 3 different things i want to do. Im playing a tank so ill be looking for the sets that make me tanky 💪💪 but overall its a good video Xillin, i always enjoy your uploads

Glad I came across this vid. NGL I doubt AoC will end up ever coming out of Alpha the game has been in development for far too long, 2015 and its now 2023 and were still just in Alpha? It's gonna go the way of Star Guardian. That said if their game philosophy is like Xillin's, the game is already dead. The average mmo player has changed, and what Xillin described is a 2006 WoW BC mindset where grinding is "fun" and elitism was "in". The reason why things are so "easy" today is because the majority of players WANT them to be easy, not the minority elitists of course, but the majority that is the average gamer. That's precisely why games are "easier" today, the devs were reacting to the player base, it wasn't just them making things easier for shits and giggles. And any game that fails to address the "casual player" needs just ends up becoming a niche B tier game with fewer players. And with AoC being a subscription based game, it will die out if it doesn't make that majority base happy. It might be a long death like many a MMO before it, but no truly successful mmo's have got to where they are by catering to the desires of the elite few. Players value their time far more than they did and this idea that people are itching to have theirs wasted each time they are killed is ..a very unique take. The reason's why big raid guilds aren't a big thing anymore is because aint nobody got time for it. They don't got time to audition for a spot like they would a job IRL, most dont have the luxury of gaming for hours on end because some of us work. And this idea that playing multiple games is somehow "bad" is weird. Preach was a hardcore WoW player, didn't play any other game, was a ultra end game player, grinded TF outta shit, crunched numbers, min maxed. And even he has moved on from that shit and realizes sometimes games WASTE the players time, one of his new philosophies is don't fucking waste the players time with "mandatory grinds". The player you described is a dying breed (thankfully) that is stuck in 2006. Games have moved on from those players, and if AoC comes out the gates with all your ideas, its already doa. "These people are going to be complaining, but still logging in to play the maximum hours" Nah dude, that aint happening. You really have no grasp on what the average player wants because you're not a causal player which by definition makes you apart of the minority who have 15 hours a day to play games. As someone who has a job, I can assure you most of us do not agree with your assessment and we will not be sub to a game that wastes our time.
