Yeah an actual live performance was an incredibly rare thing, on tv shows, back in the 80's.
@3hooks781 Жыл бұрын
Aside from this awesome live performance many of these shows did employ lip syncing (to what's still today called an instrumental TV track); although it wasn't called lip syncing prior to the Milli Vanilli debacle. Solid Gold or Soul Train are great examples of this. Since these shows supplemented for radio in those days they were pretty much great for audiences at home to hear the exact record they were going to go out and buy at an actual record shop. Plus there was no doubt of these artists being able to deliver the goods since we knew we'd see them live when they came through our cities, anyway. But yeah, things really have changed.

I was "SYSTEM'S" tour mgr./soundman & mixed audio for this performance. The vocals ("Mic Murphy') are all live, vocal-doubling is the backing vocals on the 'TV track' with drums & bass. The 1st keyboard player ("David Frank") is also playing live as is their guitarist ("Paul Pesco") & his vocal mic. The 2nd keyboard ("Khris Kellow") & vocal mic & all of the rest is 'live'. When "Mic" yelled "Break it down" & went into the audience it wasn't rehearsed, but performed live a hundred times. David Frank (onstage) & I (basement) scrambled that together & played the show out.

Such a deep song about love-connection and haunting obsession. It brings back memories ... most great, but one of them sad: It was late January 1983, and I went to a family house party -- a surprise party for an uncle. He was a young uncle, around 26 y/o. I was 18 and wearing a poofy-sleeved taffeta minidress -- jade with diagonal black stripes. Anyway, after my uncle's best friend and I had hoofed it up and did the Moonwalk to MJ's "Billie Jean," all the slow jams started playing. That's when he told me not to go, because first up was "You're in My System," which was one of the newest hot songs toward the end of 1982. Well, he wanted me to slow-dance with him to "You're in My System," and I was flattered! I felt so grown-up. We got a lot of mileage out of that song because it was the extended version of the song: the 12-inch. Ooooohhhhh. It was (is) the kind of song that you could slow-dance to or dance straight up because it's midtempo. Half the people in the living room were slow-dancing to it, though. By the time that song was over, we had a mutual infatuation that, for me, at 18, felt liketrue love. ... Less than two months later, he got killed in a bodega robbery. Apparently, he didn't want to obey the armed burglars by keeping his head down. Trying to play the hero, I guess. That's the type of good man he was. Didn't even make it to 30 y/o. I was devastated. We all were. I love him to this day -- I guess it was more than infatuation, hunh? And whenever I hear Mic singing "You're in My System" with The System (it's on my Spotify), I remember the fragrance of his cologne mixed with his perspiration as he held me close, slow-dancing. Thanks for letting me share this bittersweet memory of that song at a house party that I shall never forget.
