Honestly, I don't know for sure how old he was when he wrote this song. I feel like there's a beauty in the words, though, as with a lot of his songs. Ultimately in each line of this song, or at least each verse anyways, he is showing how broken he is (hence the title of the song lol). He's saying: you've caused me this pain, but no matter what I still think the world of you. I can't bare the pain anymore; you're all I have left, and knowing you are leaving/have left is causing me more pain.
