You Can Do This Hard Thing - Words and Music by Carrie Newcomer

A Message from Carrie:
Barbara Kingsolver has written about a phrase she uses to encourage her children, “You can do hard things.” I loved this idea behind this phrase. It absolutely acknowledges the difficulty of the task at hand, and yet, at the same time it completely affirms that the child has everything they need to move forward, and that they have support. I began to think about all the times in my own life that someone has given me that kind of sound advice and encouragement.
This is another song written for a spoken word and song collaboration with Parker J. Palmer and Gary A. Walters "What We Need is Here: Hope, Hard Times and The Human Possibility." Feel free to share this with someone who has helped you in hard times - or perhaps you'd like to encourage today.

FULL LYRICS:
There at the table with my head in my hands
A column of numbers I just could not understand
You said "Add these together, carry the two, now you"
You can do this hard thing, you can do this hard thing
It's not easy I know, but I believe that it's so
You can do this hard thing
At a cold winter station breathing into our gloves
This would change me forever, leaving for God know's what
You carried my bags, you said "I'll wait for you"
You can do this hard thing, you can do this hard thing
It's not easy I know, but I believe that it's so
You can do this hard thing
Late at night I called, and you answered the phone
The worst it had happened, and I did not want to be alone
You quietly listened, you said, "we'll see this through"
You can do this hard thing, you can do this hard thing
It's not easy I know, but I believe that it's so
You can do this hard thing
Here we stand breathless and pressed in hard times
Hearts hung like laundry on backyard clothes lines
Impossible just takes a little more time
From the muddy ground comes a green volunteer
In a place we thought barren, new life appears
Morning will come whistling some comforting tune for you:
You can do this hard thing, you can do this hard thing
It's not easy I know, but I believe that it's so
You can do this hard thing.

Feb 2023 both my sisters were in 2 different hospitals with different life limiting cancers & the words "you can do this hard thing" were repeated often. 💔

Dear Carrie, your songs are helping me navigate a moment of doubts regarding my health. Just left the hospital, and your voice and words helped me during the long hospital nights and are helping me regain trust and confidence that I can still make the best out of my situation. Thank you so much for all the beauty and healing you gift us!

Two friends are brought together because their husbands share a horrible cancer. One shares advice. One shares her art. And then one shares this song. We can do this hard thing, but it helps to have a beautiful reminder. Thanks!!!

I shared this song with a friend. I had told her that it is my trusty flashlight when I find myself engulfed in head chatter and depression. For me this has healing qualities.

Helping me get through a very sad day as we learn the results of the presidential election. We can indeed, after we grieve a bit, to do this hard thing together, remembering that our story is not over.We will keep on keeping on together thanks to music like yours and so many amazing spirited companions that have faith and hope.

I was thinking of this song the other day when I was able to play and sing at my brother's memorial service. I was playing another of Carrie's songs, "The Gathering of Spirits," and I was trembling because I was so nervous and emotional.

I've known your music for over 30 years, and this is so good. The lyrics are clever, yet very direct. It feels so genuine. I recently found Long fields, and October nights signed vinyl copies including news clippings. Like 60 dollars for both in an antique shop! Love those albums.

21 and more than a little lost to be honest. But someone once told me that hope is the last thing to go and so I figure, even if I should find myself on a cold street corner, wet, soaked through and afraid to go on, I'll remember that hope. And someone once told me to remember those disappointments and those frustrations because they just mean you still believe...you still believe you've got more to give.
