I love taking the asparagus powder mixed with some porcini mushroom powder , garlic and onion powder with a bit of seasalt and pepper..Cook with broth. I drink out of my coffee cup for lunch and sometimes dinner or an in-between snack to curb hunger! Delicious!

Watching the video of making powders. Try putting plastic wrap over the top of your Vitamix before putting the lid on and it will cut way down on the "smoke" when you take off the lid.

I'm not sure about trying the asparagus powder as we love fresh asparagus and very slightly cooked asparagus...BUT you never know. HOWEVER, your YT channel has been very helpful in my food drying journey from which dehydrator we purchased (Cosori) to my "I wonder if I can dehydrate...?" questions. I'm not hesitant to try things, but always nice to have info from you! About to make green onion powder with our plentiful "regrown" green onion tops! Oh, and great to buy nice mushrooms, but usually don't need the entire container for a fresh use, and rehydrate the leftover ones for spaghetti and a couple of other baked dishes. I'm trying now to keep a couple of canned jars of dried mushrooms in my pantry all of the time. Thanks again for your efficient and helpful tutorials.

Never thought about dehydrating asparagus. I love steamed asparagus with a sauce on top. My asparagus is coming in now. May try this since I like doing powders.

That sounds good. Do you blanch them first?
@Carol32547
@Carol32547 6 ай бұрын
@wintergreen1162 no. Just cut them to fit a wide mouth canning jar or fermentation vessel. Add salt and spices to your liking. Make sure the asperagus stays under the liquid. Ferment until the flavor is where you like it. Several days to weeks. I like mine strong so I fermented almost 2 weeks

Great idea to make a pantry shelf soup mix. I always peel the bottom ends of the asparagus to remove the outer fibers...it is a texture issue for me. Even using my Vitamix I can still feel those in my mouth but the inside of the asparagus breaks down fine. I've been canning asparagus soup base till now but how nice to create that soup but use much less pantry space. Thank you, Darcy!

Alway enjoy your content! We eat a lot of asparagus when in season and on sale. I typically use only the top 1/3 or so of each spear for meals. But chop & freeze the remainder until I have 2-3 bags. Then thaw, throw in my food processor until tiny bits, blanch and dehydrate. Works great for us and use it in many dishes. Thanks for all that you do

Awesome! And so fun that you now have worms (your dad's idea, I would think). Mine are very quiet. 🤣 Anyway, I will definitely keep on the lookout for a sale like the one you found. 😍 It's a little too early for asparagus around here, but the stores don't usually pay attention to that. I pressure canned some asparagus leek soup a couple of years ago when I was gifted extra asparagus. It was okay. I would MUCH rather keep dehydrated asparagus in my pantry instead. Thanks again for the inspiration! 💖😋👍

I have several quart jars of canned asparagus spears (seemed like a good idea at the time), but they are still very fibrous when I try to reheat them. I have a couple of pints of chopped stems as well. I have tried making soup, but it's like flossing while you are eating it. I was wondering if I could dehydrate everything and use it that way. The colour would be a little off, and I wouldn't brag about the nutrient value, but do you think I could get some value out of something I am unlikely to use? I am even willing to re-can the broth from the jars (if there is enough of it) or save it in the fridge until I have enough powder to make a soup.

Trim your asparagus first - that helps remove some of the tough outer (sort of like some folks do with celery). And to get something less fibrous, make the soup without the milk, dry it, then add the powdered milk when making the powder.

Cross my heart, I trimmed the spears very well to get them nicely into the quart jars. Got the stuff on sale at a very good price, and we had some fresh while I canned the rest. Cooked fresh, with butter and salt it was fine, firm and tasty, but pressure canning asparagus just makes it limp and stringy. From now on, will dehydrate what we don't eat fresh. And I don't think I have anything to lose by dehydrating the canned stuff. @@ThePurposefulPantry

In Ontario we have Linen Chest. They have plastic openers called JarKey. I just bought 1 for a gift for $6 regular $8. Do the same job to prevent dents in your lids and open your preserved foods.
