You can play Portal in Roblox! (Sort of)

Hey there! Im a roblox developer here to explain some things you brought up. First off I would like to shed some light on why the portals look weird, in roblox we have access to something called a Viewport Frame. We can drop things into a viewport frame and it will render a brand new scene based off of what you put in there! Sadly roblox is very limiting in its graphics (even though there are quality settings) and disable shadows and all custom lighting on them. Also, the reason they look pixilated in some areas is because the resolution or "PixelsPerStuds" for the nerds out there is turned down drastically due to the roblox engine being so unoptimized. Another thing I would like to clarify is yes, this game does use PBR Materials! I would love to dive more into aspects of this game on a technical level but I wont in this comment cause I would prob ramble on about how roblox has so many missed opportunity for us devs lol. Hope this explains some stuff :D

actually roblox engine is pretty good optimized its just the fact that it contains legacy code. The reason it looks that wacky is also becouse Neon material will always render as low level resolution Also i belive that it will decrease ammount of particles and vectors in beam (VFX) Mostly you told everything right.

@@yarik_superpro I was talking about why the portal rending its self was wacky because that was the point brought up in the video, also trust me, most of the rendering techniques roblox uses are horribly unoptimized. you can just tell is bad by just looking at the how roblox deals with the glass shader. The fact that it isn’t in any modern shader encoding shows it’s extremely outdated and unoptimized.

the only this i can blame roblox of is their alghoritms. Most of the stuff they do right but alghoritms are a huge shame. Mostly its issue of local devs becouse they infact very dumb and making game cash grab or how i call "for themselves" and only minority like 1% are a decent developers.Most good devs literally unable to get their games popular to alghoritms and they end up becoming contractors working for other studios. Like idk how to get game popular without it being cashgrab on roblox fr.

From my understanding, the blurriness of up-close portals IS an engine limitation of Roblox itself. You're not actually directly looking at geometry copied into the world behind the wall, you're looking at a copy of world geometry that's been _rendered to a GUI texture_ (GUI stuff can be applied to surfaces in the world, as well as onscreen), and I think there's a hard "pixel resolution" limit on that render-to-texture entity. At a distance, it's less than one texture-pixel per screen-pixel and looks fine, but once you've got your face all up ons in the portal itself, a texture-pixel takes up multiple screen-pixels and bam, blur city. (ah, found it in the roblox wiki, it's called a ViewportFrame and yes, it does have limitations on rendering)

About how portals can be done in Roblox: Roblox unlike unity cant have camera tricks like two cameras. In Roblox you can do it by on parts surface make a ui holder (Surface UI). And in that ui viewportFrame. Then you need another camer and to copy part of the world to that viewportFrame. Ui like holders (Screen UI, Surface UI and Billboard UI) have limitations like amount of pixels Y and X (which is like parameter) it's probably so potato PCs don't just "explode". And i think there's another limitation I don't actually know, but it's hard (or not possible). I have done a litle bit of research on this topic cuz I do sometimes use Roblox Studio (for people who don't know Roblox Studio is like game endine or game creator you could say).

Kinda funny. There are so many different platforms doing the same thing as roblox is doing. Core is like roblox but in the unreal engine. S&box is like roblox but in the source 2 engine, etc

Thing about Roblox is that its been around for such a long time that the playerbase (who are mostly kids that only hear about roblox) has become super accustomed to roblox as a whole, making it really entrenched. For something else to take its place, roblox would either need to become completely obsolete or completely outclassed by something revolutionary, and it would need to be properly advertised

I paid for this games early access and its a really good fangame, its got nice graphics but its only problem is it just is portal with different levels and a less funny robot. i was a bit dumbfounded that they went free literally just after they opened early access. but eh. tunneler is one of the best roblox games honestly though, in a landscape where they are trying to make the platform closer to a mobile game store (literally people are remaking mobile games) they are making inspired games or just fangames that look and play pretty well. homemade meal also had made microwave meal which is a pretty good mario inspired platformer. and its newer than tunneler, that dev is way too determined for roblox. (also you shouldve used the 2010-2016 ROBLOX logo instead of the 2017-now logo for the thumbnail, more recognizable and just looks better frfr. it also would stand out alot more.)
