The Ultimate Plastering Tutorial.
I genuinely want to help you to learn to plaster, watch this video, and others to fully understand. We were all beginners once.
Plastering is a skill you can learn by watching others and practicing yourself.
I really hope you enjoy it.
I'm doing my best to make content that can genuinely help you, it's took me 20+ years to master my craft and I want to help others as much as I can.
If you appreciate what I'm doing and you understand how much work goes into editing and creating these videos and you would like to show your appreciation then I will happily have a nice cold beer.
you can easily send me a drink with this link...

*I have genuinely been overwhelmed with the support that I have received so I just wanted to let you all know, every penny will go towards buying a better camera and microphone so that I can improve the quality of these videos for you.
thank you so so much.

You should really consider tutoring at a college for your retirement years mate….this knowledge is priceless….. I’ve done a quick course on skimming and it was helpful to go with my profession as a decorator….. but if I were to go full time plastering this stuff really helps, keep up the good work buddy and keep banging these vids out !! Cheers Jon

Make it look so easy! 🥵 Tried my first wall today, started off getting the mix too wet so it was sliding off the Hawk. Not sure if that was because I put too much water spray on the Hawk first or if the mix was just too wet. I guess I was scared of it going off too quick if it was a thicker mix. I was plastering over a wall that had had chucks out of it, mixture of old plaster, bonding of some sort and maybe cement. Found it all really hard and messy! Little chucks of old wall finding it's way onto the trowel. I was also struggling to see the best way to get it off the board onto the trowel!. Beginners error after watching your video. Maybe I never attempted to use the board to do that because the mix was too wet!? So many skills involved in this job while the clock is ticking. Big respect to you guys who make this look easy!

Just watched it all. Amazing again Kirk! I have some questions if that's okay: 1. How long after laying on did you flatten in that first coat? 2. During the second coat I noticed you deliberately squished a dent into the plaster then filled over it. What was that for? Other than that, amazing stuff yet again. I laughed at the chicken's foot comment, and the banging Attenborough impression! Oh, and just some ideas for future vids, again, if that's okay: - A video focused on just the wet trowel, or rather from when you first ever use water on the plaster during a set; up close touch tests, what to do if one area of the wall is too wet while the rest isn't, etc. - A video focused on amounts on your trowel for certain areas of the wall, i.e. near the adjoining walls, then for full sweeps up and down the wall, side views of the plaster on the wall to see around about the thickness required, as visually this is better than, "3mm thick, "now 2mm thick". Once more, thank you so much mate. Some beers coming your way once I'm paid!

Love your comments Marcus. I'm busy but wanted to quickly reply. 1. You can do this straight away. 2. Was a little crumb of set plaster. (Possibly from the handle on the bucket) they scrape up the wall so you can either pick them out or just crush them like I did 👌🙂 Well spotted

Hi Mate! Just wanted to say fantastic work that you're putting into your channel! I've already learnt so much about different products to use and what wall preparation method to use. When looking for advice out there you always get told leave it to the professionals which I know is true for most cases but videos like yours gives a DIY'er the confidence to try skim that one or two walls that you can't afford to fork out for at the time. Really appreciate your vids. A few q's. 1. What's your opinion on using spatula/speedskim for flattening? 2. Can you recommend trowel sizes for a DIY'er? 3. Tips on angle/pressure whilst laying Vs flattening Vs polishing (perhaps an idea for a vid?) Thanks man
@Onthetrowel
@Onthetrowel Жыл бұрын
Hey Zephyr let's see 1. Beginners can use a speedskim if they can afford the outlay, stay away for spatulas until your better as they can cause issues if you don't know when to use them. 2. Just go for a 14" marshalltown 3. You will feel the difference if you are scraping it and you will see how much your taking off. You can't really teach exactly how much pressure as you will just know. Just the same as you know how tight to squeeze someone's hand when you shake hands

Some of the walls have been artexed. I think they all need plastering. Would I still use multi finish or do I need to do something else. The thing I worry about is everyone tells me that stone walls need to be able to breath. Many thanks. Pint bought. Cheers 🍺

@@Onthetrowel Kirk. We are in a conservation area so we can’t drastically change the outside appearance, but we can do what we like to the inside. In fact our house was originally two one up and one down houses which were joined and then had either an extension put on the back a long long time ago as it looks a similar age or it was a back to back type thing, which would be unusual as we live in cornwall.
@Onthetrowel

@Barry Nevill OK so genuinely I wouldn't put any gypsum based materials in your home, originally it would of been a lime plaster that was used and the house will have been built with that in mind. Lime is actually easier to use than the standard plaster we have now. So in a nutshell what I'm trying to say is... stick with lime, it will be better for the building and it will be easier for you to work with aswell. I would highly recommend that you use this company because they know their stuff and will tell you the best products to use for whatever you want to do and you will have the peace of mind that it is breathable and won't get damp www.lime.org.uk/

It don’t look like u got a reply so here’s what I do and it works for me speedskim just after uve laid the first coat on ( the flatter the wall for the second coat the better) and repeat it again after uve laid the second coat as well it flattens in large areas far quicker than with the trowel so buys u time then when it picks up a little u go back to the trowel and carry on as Kirk did u don’t use the speedskims again on that set it’s all trowel work hope that helps

I have PVA's the walls before and allowed to dry using 2 coats. just before plastering i apply another coat of pva and then start skimming when the pva is tacky but still wet. i still find that the skim dries out too fast. i had to put another coat of pva on the skim after flattening the 1st coat. as it was too dry and would result in crazing. Wet angles are best - I sometimes used a Twitcher, but doing big jobs (Site work) where you would put on a whole RAKE of finish at a time, I only needed a cross-grain float and a sensitive fore-finger .. You'd never know the difference - But Soooo much quicker 🙂

Hi mate. Great content. I have a wall that has crack lines in it, (it's the outside wall with the window), and I need to skim the wall but a large section has broken off. The rest is strong though. My question is, can I use the multi finish plaster to fill in the large section that's broken off before I skim the wall. And then skim the whole thing the next day? Cheers.

You make it all look and sound so easy. Until I give it a go and end up wearing half a bag of multi finish and chiselling it off the floor with a shovel 😅

@On the trowel I'm just starting out a home DIY project of skimming walls. Skimmed yesterday and was pleased with the result. Woke up this morning and the plaster had blown all over. I scrapped it off and started again. The plaster came off like Easter egg chocolate. What is the normal cause of this? I used a PVA mix (I know you like SBR) first so I thought that would have been ok. However I noticed this morning that my PVA is 2 years out of date. Could this have caused the blown plaster? Or is is possible that the previous paint on the walls was of poor quality as it looked like the plaster has puller that off too and the walls were back to the previous colour we had. Slightly disappointed but I've done it again and so far seems better. (Got some new PVA as well) Any tips / advice appreciated.

The plaster that came off, did it have the paint stuck to the plaster. Like when you picked a piece up off the floor was it still stuck to paint?

@@Onthetrowel Yes! It was contract matt we white washed the lounge in 2 years ago. The worst paint I've ever used. Chalky and doesn't like getting wet.

@@Onthetrowel I've been doing some research on 'chalky/powdery' paint and methods for preparing the walls for skimming. How would you tackle walls that have been painted with cheap chalk paint? SBR stronger mix sand down as best you can score the walls I have one wall that is becoming a nightmare with the new plaster blowing and I'm feeling like the wall hates me 🤣🤣

Everyone has a different way of teaching and a different way of learning. All I'd say is to listen to the guy that's teaching him. Sure he can learn from ne but the other guy is there every day so it will be better to learn his way first. Once you can skim confidently then you can change techniques and do whatever feels more comfortable or more importantly whatever is more efficient. Best of luck to him mate 👍👍

@@Onthetrowelbristles coming off the brush. Use it in paint. Paint will gather in the stock ferris and solidify the ends together help stop falling out. So I heard maybe not practical with a big slusher to paint with it but a 4, 5 inch you could. If that actually helps then in theory squirting SBR down into the ferris would probably work as well. If it even helps idk
