Here’s the thing with Clay. He’s been badly affected by his dad‘s cheating his dad‘s blatant cheating. Never seeing your dad wear his ring, and take a child on cheating sprees is beyond wild! I think this had a deeper effect on Clay than he ever would’ve been able to realise before coming on the show especially as a son. That doesn’t excuse his behaviour, but it definitely explains why he would take AD all the way to the altar just to say no. He badly wants to be married and experience the joys of it. He wants that life but internally he’s ill equipped to love someone unconditionally for the rest of his life. The interesting thing is the work that he did after the show is the work he should’ve done before the show- the therapy, talking it through, understanding his roots etc. All of these things should’ve been done before the show, but it took watching himself back and going through this experience to realise that he was broken. Unfortunately AD was collateral in his journey to self discovery. After watching the reunion, I liked his accountability and I do think that he has changed, but watching him on the show was like watching a tutorial on gaslighting. He’s not a bad person, he just needed to heal. I’m glad he didn’t marry AD in the end because he would’ve completely ruined it. Maybe he can be the better version of himself for someone else.
