*excerpt from sutta AN 3.78,* *"Precepts and Observances“* _... someone who cultivates precepts and observances, a lifestyle, and a spiritual path, taking this as the essence._ _If unskillful qualities grow while skillful qualities decline, that’s not fruitful._ _However, if unskillful qualities decline while skillful qualities grow, that is fruitful.._ That’s what Ānanda said, and the teacher approved. ... 🙏🙏🙏

Bravo, venerables sirs! The widespread misapprehension of jhana promulgated by so many popular contemporary teachers is disconcerting. Here is an inconvenient sutta reference that explicitly confirms exactly what you’re saying. ☸️Aṅguttara Nikāya 3.63, Venāga Sutta* *Bhikkhu Bodhi’s footnotes in his translation illustrate the intellectual gymnastics even the commentators went through in order to justify a fundamental misunderstanding of Samma Samadhi(that it is only possible to attain while statically-seated-cross-legged with closed eyes).

Yes i agree even as a layperson watching these @hillsidehermatige teaches they are without a doubt the opposite of what the contemperary teaches. Thats is frigtening becuase the true dhamma is about abandoning not craving against and some teachers promote craving the results of there incorrect teachings. Its disturbing...

Thank you so much for the talk, Ajahn. I do have a question: Does a certain conclusion in this talk pertaining to celibacy mean a lay person cannot attain Jhana as long as they are involved in a marriage or relationship that includes sexual activity? Is "quite removed from sense pleasures" a harsher line than the five precepts? I would like I have clear parameters for my practice when considering the lifestyle I have chosen. Thank you so much!
@HillsideHermitage5 жыл бұрын
That's correct. "Quite removed from sensual pleasures" means not only celibate in body, but also with a mind completely out of the sensual domain. Whether you are a layperson or a monk is not a decisive factor, but whether you are completely celibate and secluded from the crowded life is.

@@HillsideHermitage Thank you very much for a quick, clear reply! I suppose I have a follow-up question: What then should my meditative aim be as a non-celibate layperson? Mindfulness of breathing knowing I will not attain the level of detachment necessary for Jhana? I hope my question is not misguided.
@HillsideHermitage5 жыл бұрын
Your aim should be the Right view, on the basis of the impeccable Sila (Five and on some occasions Eight precepts).

Logan Brown I always read Buddha saying about the laypersons that dwell in Jhana but enjoy sensual pleasure. But I guess their mentality is different also

The most important lesson from this talk was when the notion of consequences arose. The consequences of seclusion and actively being present in the 'now' leads to 'experiences'. No thought is necessary. Does that mean the notion of Jhana only exists in memory?
@SBCBears3 жыл бұрын
No. The jhana experience can be remembered and your memory can function within jhana. Directed thought is present with jhana. The experience is not mysterious, which is not to say that it is common. You are very much aware of the present.

@denilotus55384 жыл бұрын
