I completed the crossover upgrade GR did for the Insignia B2111s and its amazing how good these cheap speakers sound with this change. I literally can't go back to listening to speakers that used the typical cheap crossover components, for me there is a harshness to the highs that plague them all. Thank you Danny for these videos and for help!

What is great about this is that like all other respectable speakers designers, Danny acknowledges that measurements are great tools and are to be respected and utilized in the design process, but then there are palpable, real differences that can be had by engineering choices and component changes that CANNOT be measured. In other words Danny uses both measurement tools AND his ears to identify elements that he feels improves or lessens loudspeaker performances. It's something that all "science-only" audiophiles need to get through their heads to understand system building and reality.
@rhalfik5 жыл бұрын
I get your point, that people can get ignorant of actual listening experience, but I wouldn't go as far as saying, that these differences cannot be measured. If they're real, they can be measured. It might be difficult, unobvious or impractical to do so though. As the time goes by more and more is being estabilished. Currently most secrets of sound quality are discovered and the picture we get of it is clear enough to build acoustically transparent line level gear, where any further improvement of measured response isn't perceivable. Furthermore the problem with subjective tests on music material is that your impression depends on the program you selected. Someone else will listen to a different song and will pick up problems that you didn't hear. In an ideal world, where time wasn't limited you could have several people listen and then investigate their impressions to eliminate the problems. But that has already been done by Harman and many others, so nowadays you can just follow a measurement workflow with proper rigor and get good results. They'll maybe not please 100% you personally, but you'll get a thumbs up from the majority of users.

How do you suppose these "sonic improvements" are being engineered into the products if they CANNOT be measured? How does that work exactly?

The air core inductors are larger gauge so there is little to no difference in resistance. Honestly friend are you sure? The difference reported on real systems tend to be on the "this is subtle but, I can hear it and it is a better" trend. My hearing is pretty good - honestly, at first I heard a clear difference each time liking the second playback - which slowly faded into hmmm, maybe not as obvious as I played the tracks in different orders and jumped from speaker a-b-a-b-a-b at the same point in the song. I am not saying there is not a difference by the way. I am saying I highly doubt the ipad reveals it. Those things sound horrible to me.

Well this convinced me. I have a pair of almost vintage B&W705's (first series) that I have been wondering if I should upgrade or not. I saw Troels Gravesen have done a similar job on some 800-series crossover - That made me wonder and started a thought process. I'm fairly ok with the sound of the 705's. I have experimentet with different positioning and feel they lack a bit of 3D and depth. I have a fairly decent amp (Electrocompaniet ECI2), that might contribute to the lack of high highs. in the end I want the speakers to open up in a similar way that the "truth" speakers did. I used to own a pair of 684 back in the late 90's and they had a great sound for that price, and was capable to deliver an open sound stage (even on a denon PMA1500R). I got the 705's speakers for a very good price and think the cost of upgrading crossover components should be justifiable. I went online and did a quick "mock up" of mundorf and Jantzen components based on the schematic I found online. However some of the values did not match excactly .. since I'm new do this, I'm wondering what is the pitfalls when sourcing similar higher quality components and value macthing ? what is the do's and don'ts to be aware of? I don't want to change the crossover in any other way other than using better quality components.

In this way, I could quickly flip from A to B within seconds. Still wasn't happy. So I flipped my chair around backwards (listening on headphones) and had someone else flip from A to B. Kind of a blind test. I consistently picked B as being 'better.' The differences were subtle, but each time, over several iterations of the test, I chose B. Not scientific by any means, but I was able to differentiate between A and B every single time and I always chose B. For the casual listener, I don't think the difference was 'worth' it. But if you're 'critically' listening, it would be an upgrade worth considering.

Even as this choice of music is pleasant, enjoyable; and offers refined subtlety, its ability to reveal the sonic differences between the speaker set ups is significantly limited. This is because this piece of music has virtually no bass frequency content, and a relatively low, range of frequency. I just think that this very good/great piece of music, is less suited for speaker sound evaluation because it is just so constricted as a palette. As one example among of course so many, I suggest songs or samples from the album: The Best of Fourplay, among other albums from the group Fourplay. Superb ... recording quality; but importantly, solid, deep bass from drums/bass guitar, all the waaay up to clear .. pristine .. metallic cymbals. The best general, testing music will have a full complement of sound in bass, midrange, and high-frequency, which are all accurately recorded. You can listen wholistically, or drill down onto any given instrument and listen to/for fidelity, speed, naturalness, tone, and more. This music, will show you what your speakers, (and system) can and cannot do; and it’s better for testing than soo much of what is being used, even at hifi shows. You can’t experience the acceleration/braking/ cornering or performance of a sports car, driving it 25 mph. on a residential street. Your system and speakers are your vehicle, the music is the street, the **test track**, or the **race track**. I say, select music that can actually reveal more sonic characteristics. (The post above is particularly applicable to floorstanding/tower speakers, but also to bookshelf speakers and your Behringers.) Cheers.
@dannyrichie97435 жыл бұрын
Actually these three tracks were selected as it made the differences very easy to discern. And deep bass and drum tracks don't show off the differences as well. They are also not reproduced well with the speakers that this is often listened to on.
@dr.anthonyforgione42535 жыл бұрын
Danny Richie I see your point, I think it’s a good one. But you didn’t just change out a single driver for example, you changed out the entire crossover network and wiring. This is a fundamental change that effects the entire signal itself, and hence both/all drivers. If for example, this change had little or even no detectable change in the bass let’s say, I would like to hear, how, it has no effect. You learn a tremendous amount when this happens, it forms and literally is, your qualitative understanding. You have to hear it, not be able ...to do this or that. Do you know what I mean by that? (I prefer this also because I often hear things in audio reproduction that others cannot- as bad as that sounds to say. = ) ) I only heard one sound sample so far, but if/when offering say 2-3 or more samples, I really think at least one of the offered samples, probably always, should be full and wide-range- in bass, mids, and highs. (And generally, I don’t mean tracks produced artificially or digitally-even though I like this music too; for testing I mean real drums-a full set, have or not have voice, bass and rhythm guitar- minimally amped and processed. Jazz is very good actually. Better than symphony/orchestra for critical listening because it can have a wider frequency range-in bass guitar and bass drums, and s/o has too many instruments grouped together which affects clarity (and everything). Haha Fourplay is ideal- CD/vinyl/full res. FLAC though. Check it out.) You’ll never understand any speaker at all, until you’ve heard this (full-wide range music) through it.
@dannyrichie97435 жыл бұрын
Yes, what was done changed everything to both drivers. And various types of music had been listened to on them. The real differences (audibly) are detail or resolution levels, imaging, sound stage layering, cleaner overall sound, less smearing, and smoother and more natural sounding vocals. Is it possible to have you guys send me an upgraded crossover /plan for my Polk S55 towers speakers ? I'm very interested

Nope. I can't tell you anything about them without first having one sent here for measuring, testing, and evaluation.

@@dannyrichie9743 Thanks for the reply. I'm out of country, otherwise I'd definitely send it to you. If you ever get your hands on an S55 and get to bless them, please let us know so I can jump on that bandwagon! Thanks and please recommend a great tower kit I should buy/build .

Did you do this with a conventional A/B blind test? Knowing which one you are listening to just supports the claim that you hear what you want to hear, doesn't it?
@dannyrichie97435 жыл бұрын
No one listening to the sound clips knew which was which until the end, yet differences are still noted. And even though I knew which was which in real time as we listened still took nothing away from the fact that they clearly sounded not only different, but better.
@carlosoliveira-rc2xt4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter. Those that believe solely on double blind testing invariably resort to blaming something else when differences are heard. Everything in life doesn't have to be placebo tested. I know when I drink great whiskey, drink a great cup of coffee, eat fine cuisine, drive a fine automobile and hear great music through a superior system.
@luke98224 жыл бұрын
@@carlosoliveira-rc2xt of course it matters. That's a silly statement, Carlos. Would you want medication that was not tested with a placebo? If my experience was the opposite of yours, who are others to believe? What if there were a hundred of us and 50 felt one way and 50 felt another? This is how truth claims are made and probabilities are found.

I have these speakers and on the whole I find them OK regardless of the up grade. In the end you have to get used to monitors and once you're used to them and their idiosyncrasy's you'll be fine.
@friedmule54035 жыл бұрын
LOL Had these speakers for some years, they never sounded as good as on your recording:-) Thay are fine for a beginner low budget studio, but you have to upgrade if you want to hear the material correctly. I did only hare the first 3 a/b samples and since you did chose to start over on each sample, it were hard to know how much the difference really was. Please next time try to let the music play as one long number, while switching between the speaker configurations. And lastly, maybe let people listen to the music, before you talk about what you think, to avoiding telling people what they are suppose to hear.
@dannyrichie97435 жыл бұрын
These were playing on a pretty top level system. So they may very well sound better than on anything else they've ever been used with. And the comparisons are easier when the material is repeated. And no one really mentioned what anyone was supposed to hear prior to the link to the sound clips.
@friedmule54035 жыл бұрын
@@dannyrichie9743 I am surprised that they have been on a audiophile system, they are designed for entry level near field. Behringer is a great brand for those who want to go into music production, but have a low budget. If you had a piece of music and did switch from one configuration to an other while being at the same moment, you can really here if a voice do change, while if you have to listen for maybe 15 seconds before arriving to the exact moment, you have already "forgotten" how it sounds. A non trained listener, do remember for extremely short time, tests have shown that a non trained person can remember the approximate sound in up to 5 seconds. If you watch your video, do you all talk about how you each experienced the change. And that info do the listener take with them to your amazing recording. By the way, I am impressed on how clear you all express how you think the sound were, it's not an easy task to describe a sound, but you manages it every time. :-)
@dannyrichie97435 жыл бұрын
Actually it is a lot easier to discern playing the same segment then repeating it. And for most audiophiles 15 seconds is no problem. And it is pretty easy to cut back and forth on the segments to replay the same shorter segments back to back. I wish everyone could have heard it live. There is so much more that the mics just don't pick up.
@friedmule54035 жыл бұрын
@@dannyrichie9743 No for you who work professinally every day, 15 seconds may be duable, but not for most. We are talking about hearing minute details in difference, not major. :-) Look I know that you are honestely trying to deliver some facts. My reaction is due to how many times I have seen audiophiles, mostly professionals, tricked to hear something that wasn't there. I have even my self, been helper at a event, meant to investigate how easy it were to trick highly renowned audiophiles. We did as almost every salesperson do: 1) Presenting some "facts" about a new product. 2) Tell them about what they are about to here, what they shall be focused on. 3) play some music 4) Stop the music and talk about anything for as long as possible, so no one have a chance of remembering the former sound. 5) Play the exact same music from the start again, with no change at all in the system 6) stop, remember people of what they should be focused on 7) Ask people and about 90% did here the difference, even some did tell it were as night and day. And yes, it was top magazine audiophiles who wrote for a living. :-)

Good evening (Indian STD time). Let me know one thing whether I am right or wrong. Speakers of any wats sound better if they are fitted in a box made out of Best quality wood than in a box made of any other material ?
@rustyshackleford69785 жыл бұрын
Bhalchandra Lagu Actually, speakers are best sounding in quality MDF, not soft or hard woods (you don’t want woods that resonate). You can certainly apply a layer of wood veneer to the MDF to make them look nice.
@512bb5 жыл бұрын
Material science & the implementation of materials are a complex subject. Don't get caught up in defending any one approach. You tend to see a lot of MDF because its inexpensive, heavy & easy to work with.

I was thinking of replacing my B&W 686 s1 witch i listen with a B&W 608 sub in my leaving room via a stereo receiver. But after getting to know Danny via his youtube videos i was willing to do an experiment :) My x-overs were simple 3 components. L air core inductor for the woofer which i left original and a sand cast resistor and poly cap witch i replaced for a mils resistor and a SONICAP gen1 capacitor. And let me tell you it is exactly as they describe it here. The top end opened up. More space between notes. The speaker became taller and wider. Clarity improved dramatically. That's what i heard immediately. Just so i was not fooling my self i called my brother and did a blind test A B between the upgraded speaker and the original. Same conclusion. For around 50$ worth of cpas and resistors i got my self new old speakers :). Also ordered the Klipsch pr-600m kit for my other system. Can't wait to do them as well.

Ok I just got to listen through my home system in a dedicated and acoustically treated room. I played the clip through the youtube app on my TV. Digital signal then goes to a Yamaha pre/pro to a 120 watt per ch Rotel amp to some Canton tower speakers. I heard the diffrence almost instantly. No, it's not night and day. However for critical listening on a decent system it's a very nice gain. Unlike on my phone I didnt the gains in the upper freq's. The gains were without doubt in the area of clarity and spatial presence. I would for sure pay for a gain in sound quality like this. Would I pay for gaines like this for people listening mostly to home theater, no. Nor would I say this is worthwhile for the casual listen who rarely sits and listens to music, but mostly listens as background entertainment.
