Till you say otherwise my headcanon tells me that he is hypnotised to the point of creating new personalities with new memories based on the emotions that's why he has purple eyes at the start and they change to yellow while he changes his "owner". I do know it does make too much sans but that's what my head created!

Actually, his eyes change colour depending on his "owner". He was hypnotised by someone at the age of 14 after they kidnapped him because they realised how good he was at fighting etc. and they would sell him to different people. He would obey them, do what they want for them and then come back to the "base" mentioned in the video to get a new "owner" who would be already waiting there for him. The contract did say tho, that if he ever gets caught, to just give him away to the cops. But when his owner "disowns" him, because of the fact he's still hypnotised, he has to find a new one and Will just happened to be the only person there/the closest to him and he gave him an order ("Come on,..." as in "Come with me") which immediately made Dream adapt him as a new owner. Dream can not control it or anything he's doing, but he is still concious and very aware of everything that is happening, but he doesn't have any memories of his childhood before he got kidnapped, or they're very vivid/unclear/blurred :)
