My entire business model is built on investing $6-$8 per item, Selling for $20-$30 on eBay, and netting $7-$10 per item. We sell 600 ish items a month. I could buy ten times the inventory I do, so its scalable If I wanted to work more. I'm netting 4-6k a month. The idea you cant make this work if you aren't making 1000% ROI are just misguided. I do exactly the same thing, using the cash back credit cards for every purchase, and Always pay it in full monthly. Also don’t mind buying an item for $20, selling it for $40 + shipping, and netting a $11 or $12 profit. Over time, those profits add up, and who doesn’t like making a 50% profit. We still have an ebay account but we use it as a way to advertise our Brick and mortar location. We cut back to the smaller size store and we really don't post that much on there. We sell antiques, have a brick and mortar store. We get more walk in traffic than ebay simply by having a facebook page and costing things as they come in. Our time is valuable, so listing photography, taxes, cost of sales just makes no sense on Ebay. People who are trying to sell Yard sale junk are now competing with chinese drop shippers who are selling new products. I make so much money on travel. My keeping track of mileage is a major write off against profit. Many years I’m driving to pick so much, the government allowed this last year 62.5 cents per mile and making actual $18,000 to $25,000 on legal annual mileage write offs which is so much more than keeping individual receipts like gas, tires, brakes, engine repairs, oil changes, transmission cost even rental costs if your vehicle goes to shop. The allowable standard deduction from profit allows me to keep money to reinvest That I don’t pay taxes on. Winner winner chicken dinner. Love this business.

The credit card example may have been brought up as many use a dedicated credit card to keep track of their purchases and expenses. If one goes into selling on Ebay expecting to make enough sales in 30 days (It can sure seem that way from some YT videos) to pay off the credit card monthly, that can be the issue. Many, many items are long tail and can take months to sell. Seeing expenses add up while waiting for sales will discourage many people. Even if they are using cash, it can be discouraging. The old adage, "You have to have money to make money", is true with Ebay too. It may not be as much with other businesses, but you still have to be patient to see a return on your investment.

It’s when you start listing Willy nilly cheap items .. that’s when people get frustrated on shipping and how eBay works.

They do have a point, but that is looking at that single item and basing the whole business model on that one sale. When volume sales comes into play you end up making anywhere from $2/hr to $500+ hr! I know some days I dont make anything and some I make $100/hr. Honestly it's too hard to try to make "hourly" pay in reselling. I aim for my yearly salary to be $X amount. You still have zero control over that number, but it keeps a idea on where you should be on items and listings. My ebay store has enough money in it to pay every bill I have off and sit comfortably, but the stuff doesn't sell immediately. Theoretically I have $100/hr+ in inventory.

The ROI calculation has to involve the cost of labor and then be annualized. You always have the option of putting your money in an S&P 500 index fund and getting an average annual return of 10.5% which doubles your money every 10 years. I think it is better to just think about the profit per hour on an item by item basis, like you said. And yes you need to include your sourcing time. Keep a log and get an average per hour of how many items you pick up.

I absolutely agree with you! I feel that you did an amazing job breaking things down. Obviously, some things will vary but overall you nailed it! I hear (read) so many people complain about ebay all the time. I just couldn't be more grateful for it! I have sold off and on since 1999 and am now full-time. Just starting back up in January I am now thrilled with the results! I just need to ramp it up now that I'm back in a groove. What we put into it is EVERYTHING. We hear it so often that we make money on the buy. I buy super low whenever possible and pay attention to sell-through rates, and get as much of my shipping supplies for free as possible. Ebay is helping me put my life back together after Hurricane Ian (we are still rebuilding here in Florida). I am absolutely certain that there is going to be so much more than that because I know what I am capable of. That's where the money is truly made. Keep up the awesome work, I appreciate you 🥰! OH, I almost forgot! I DREAM OF GENIE (or I Dream of Jeannie 😉)

I dream of genie, sell through rate makes a big difference, I will buy lower margin profit items if they sell fast, something with a slower sell through rate has to have larger margins in order to buy. Great video.

I Dream of Genie! I have been selling on eBay for 25 years part time as a hobby and because I love it. I think there are a lot of new sellers that think they can get rich quick without putting in any work. Some people also get stuck spending too much time researching their item and it cuts into time that could be spent listing more items. Keep it simple. List items you are familiar with until you get the hang of eBay. It gets easier with time. You get a feel for what sells quickly vs something that is going to sit in your store forever, and what the profit margins are.

As a new seller, I'm selling tshirts, books and novety items. I'm pretty happy at time. I'll probably never sell heavy items, to keep cost down. I Dream Of Jeanie

- "I'm leaving sourcing out of the equation". Well, then we can't accurately assess cost. - $2 in the miscellaneous expenses is low. Even though he used all the boxes he had for free, that doesn't mean they don't have a value that could be considered. You're not always going to have a free box laying around, and even if you do, there's still a market value that could be assigned. -Not to mention the cost of everything that he can't/doesn't sell that he purchased that sits or he loses on. -The equivalent cost of storing all that stuff. Ft2 has value and while he may already have space available for this stuff, if he didn't, there would be a cost associated with storage and a value/item could be assigned. - Listing items takes time, shipping takes time, sourcing takes time. While we may claim that we enjoy doing those activities, and it doesn't matter anyways, it certainly is a cost. Without taking all this into consideration, we couldn't accurately come to a $/hr rate. And because of that, video cannot accurately describe if it's worth it, or not. A better thing would be for him to take all the time he spends on this stuff, accurately access his total revenue, subtract all his cost (yes, all cost. Equivalent of what it would cost to pay someone to source, ship, list, store, etc) and the come to a total profit. After he came to that total profit, he would divide by hours spent (all hours) and could come to an hourly rate.

You may not be able to make a living on eBay but you can make money. Those two concepts are completely different. I sell stuff often as well as buying stuff and I never lose money on the stuff I sell. The key is never feel you have to make a sale. I have had stuff set for months but eventually it all sells.

My small town hardware store recycles cardboard boxes. You can find a similar place where you can pick up boxes. Learn to build your own boxes for odd-size items.

We don’t have a landline phone. How do you test old phones?
@johnjeffreys64406 ай бұрын
may have a dial tone after plugging in
@Jeff_Davis6 ай бұрын
Look for an old VOIP adapter (Vonage) they can be found pretty cheap and can be hacked easily to provide dialtone. I have a Linksys PAP2 setup as a ringdown circuit with Line 1 downstairs and Line 2 upstairs and in the garage - no need to even dial, just lift the receiver and it rings where you want it to.

My mom still has 2 original ones. She stopped using the rotary and swapped it for the push bottom touch tone which she tested by plugging it in to the phone port.

I'm going to have to agree you had money to spend that was yours. Whats left thats actually yours after may be close to breaking even. You must include gas, time sourcing, time listing and yes the big one federal tax. There is a shear large amount of volume to actually truly make out. 1 dollar to every 25 you might make out and lets be honest 1 hour sourcing unless at a good large auction definitely digs into profit.

Well, I just started following you recently here in Virginia. I was inspired to start an eBay store by you and a couple others. I can't imagine having the amount of inventory you have. I would never put anything on a credit card. I started my store with a hundred-dollar bill that I found. I have not invested any of my own money, I should do about $2,000 in sales my first month. I have 60 items listed. I would literally have to go look for more items to list tomorrow I do not have a back stock. The Goodwill and post office are less than a mile from my house if I need. I've learned in the past 3 weeks that if it can't sell for around $30 (at least) and be picked for around $5 then I don't want it... After fees, if i take a lower offer, at least make $10 bill off that sale. $20 if im lucky. Buuuuuuut, 30% of my items are thing I purchased for around $3 to $5 plus gas, plus time plus energy and I will sell between $40 and $100. 3 weeks into this adventure and I'm shipping 10 items out tomorrow.

Our local Goodwill is still a Good Mine. Our prices have stayed the same. I live near 5 million dollar homes on the Chattahoochee River in Georgia. Rich people are still donating amazing stuff. Our Goodwill managers are crooked and let people pick in the back. Still getting stuff dirt cheap. Screw Goodwill when you can. Become a Hundred Handed Bandit....It's free.

After I retired, I found myself not really doing much, except day-to-day work around the house and a few vacations here and there. At that point I knew I wanted to keep active and also not xxx on social security or start depleting our retirement accounts, so I started reselling. It helps keep me busy and I enjoy the hunt, regardless of the hourly rate, though I am diligent to make sure I'm picking up profitable items. I Dream of Genie
