You Can't Use That Word!!!

The girls told them, "You can't use that word!"It takes a lot of bravery to stand up to people and tell them when what they are doing is wrong. Especially when they don't even realize what's wrong about it. They chose to be advocates and educate others and I'm so proud of them. There are words that are extremely offensive to the special needs community. Kylie and Summer find out first hand that there is still so much that needs to be done for autism acceptance, autism awareness, and special needs acceptance in general. Words can hurt and we should all be more mindful of hurting others. I'm so proud of them for standing up for our girl and others.

“I was following the ABA protocol and they weren’t having it.” 😂😂😂 We are late so often and I wish our school had a place to write reasons. Because no matter how early we start and how well prepared I think I am... at least once or twice a week there’s something.

Sophie Honey yes. I have see people use R word that I hate. It makes me angry. I think hearing people called me R-word. I’m deaf. They bullied me then I fight with them. That’s long ago I was 9. I fought with them. She put her hand on so I slammed my shoe on her hand. I stand up. I’m glad that many of my friends and you support together and said not use that word. You’re stand up too.

My husband and I were out walking and a group of people were passing us. He heard one use the r word. He immediately spoke up and said please don't use that. He is in his first year of special education teacher, 54 years old, and the kind of person that does not say anything, very timid around strangers. Afterwards he and I was very proud of his quick response.

Liked for Summer and her friend's standing up. I'll admit I've used the R-word before, and at this point I am definitely ashamed, but especially after watching a lot of your vlogs, and fairly recently having a young cousin with DNS (along with one aunt as a special education teacher, and another as a speech language pathologist) I have realized how insensitive and really rude it can be. It's one of those things where it's easy not to think about until it starts to hit close to home, so to say. I really enjoy the advocacy that comes along with your vlog, and the fact that you really make us feel like part of your family with all of the love and conversation you have with everyone. If you ever find yourselves smack-dab in the middle of PA I'll happily treat you all to Dunkin.

One of the kids in my Sunday school class has autism and he ran out and went outside. I got him down off the slide he slid down I couldn’t pick him up and I took his hand and got him inside the church. I told him no we can’t play outside it’s about time for devotion then Sunday school. They started putting two teachers for a class unless they are teenagers we only have a few. I’m glad to have two teachers per class.

I work in Midtown Manhattan (super close to Summer's school), and a customer used the r-word the other day. I said, "please don't use that word. It's really hurtful." She used it again and I stood firm. The customer left, and I hope she stops using that word. It's honestly so shocking because I haven't heard anyone use it in YEARS, and the woman was in her mid-30s. It happened with another customer earlier this week when I wasn't there. Smh.

Yay for standing up for what's right, Summer and Kylie! It is an ongoing battle in my life as it's a very commonly used insult in Oregon, especially the area near us, with lots of "hicks." Some people just don't understand how hurtful these things can be, the power of their words. Story time: my husband invited a coworker over for dinner recently. He was raised in a completely neurotypical environment and had never been around anyone atypical (even though he has a nephew on the spectrum, he hasn't met him). That said, he is a sweet kid, just completely ignorant. I overheard a conversation between him and my husband about having children. The coworker said the only way he'd have children was if he had to adopt his (not local) sister's children in an emergency. He goes on to say "I'd only take my niece though, I don't want a kid with Autism (his nephew)." The look on my husband's face was priceless. He was waiting to see what I'd say. Momma Bear doesn't tolerate that crap. I said "Excuse me? What did you just say?" and again, my husband looked frightened haha. "You would abandon a child simply because he has Autism? You've been playing with an Autistic kid all afternoon. Why don't you tell me what's "wrong" with her?" He stumbled on his words and said "Yeah, but she's not retarded." I think there may have actually been smoke coming from my ears at this point. Normally I'm a level headed person but that doesn't fly. Our nephew has an intellectual disability and this Auntie loves him fiercely, he's so damn cool. The R word is not allowed in my house and everyone knows it. I don't remember what I said to the coworker but he hasn't been brave enough to come back for dinner. He did, however, ask my husband about our baby girl the next day at work. Hopefully he learned something and will change his thinking!

I was getting worried. I was beginning to think we were not getting a vlog tonight and I can't sleep without my Maass fix. I love you guys so much! I can't believe in this day and age that there is still such a lack of awareness about Autism. It's not because the information is not out there because it is but take heart, it's not just Autism. There is a general lack of awareness about a lot of disabilities. For example, my Spina Bifida. As far as the R word goes, there is never an excuse to use that word. Ever! That is not a lack of awareness. That is a lack of compassion period! Sorry that is one thing that really sets me off! I am so proud of Summer for standing up for Abbie and all the other Abbie's in the world.

Hey beautiful family. Hi and Thank you again Summer and Kylie. This subject is one that is of importance to me because everyone knows there are so many negative things in this world that need to be changed or addressed. Fortunately there are so much more positive and very awesome gold hearted people like you guys are, the Maass Squad are and so many that come and go unnoticed because good people never ask for anything in return and continue to try to make a difference . I am so proud of you all and those who continue to try to put and end to all negative actions , words, etc and not giving up on doing good things for others despite being knocked down, made fun of and whatever else happens. We all know it's not easy however with awareness, education, and so many other positive options around because there are people who care, love, respect, have plenty of knowledge, have so much understanding, kindness, etc. I know and they know these positive ways to make our world better doesn't cost a thing and until those who think they know despite not having to walk in the shoes of others, no one should have the right to think the know what right or wrong or judging others is ok. It's never ok, NO human being is better than another. We all have a lot more in common if those who think that they are better than others. They should take a few minutes to stop and think about it. Stop and see what really matters in life. All that matters is making some kind of a positive change, something most people want but can't for whatever the reason are. We all need to go out there, UNITED in STRENGTH and make differences, no matter how big or small it is so important and for those who continue to do so I THANK YOU for being who you are and for what you do from my heart to your hearts. As always love you guys, thank you, you will always have us by your side and know how much you are all thought of, appreciated and so much more. Pleases take care, be safe and continue being the wonderful , inspirational and awesome family I am so honored to know. Have a wonderful weekend. Hope Priscilla and Maverick are getting better with each new day. 😘💜💛😇🌟🐶

Recently came across your channel and I love what you do! I am an autism mama in NYC. My son is 8 and low functioning. People I work with and meet always expect ASD kids to be some variant of high functioning and it just isn't real. We need to educate people on the struggles and need for support in our community. I have been thinking about starting a channel myself for this reason. Keep it up mom and dad. 💙💙

ACES, I AM CALLING YOU OUT DUDE ! Seriously ! ?? "a semi successful win" ??? No way fathering! I was OVERJOYED to see how well it went. Yes, I did not see all the behind the scenes action but she did not have a melt down or anything "dramatic". Why am I really calling you out? You need to give each of you (in your household) a lot of credit for all you do with Abbie and just THAT is a success. I called you out to tell you to give yourself (selves?) more credit. I ADORE all of you and have MUCH respect for each of you ! PS: I use to be a foster mom to "special needs" children. I had 35 children in foster care in my home and adopted 2 of them (they have sadly passed away), so I am very aware that we need to give ourselves pats on the back, even for the "not 100% successful wins" - said with LOVE & Prayers :)

Ok.... granted, I'm probably a cry baby due to menopause hormones...lol....but, Summer has me n tears right now. As I've stated my late big sis was mentally challenged and back in the 70's that dang word was used as a "catch all" for any/every mental disability. I'm SO NOT PC... yet it's just terribly insensitive and hurtful. Summer, I am extremely impressed by your leadership and humanitarian qualities. I pray that more young folks will follow you and Isaiah's lead and realize that it's just NOT COOL to be oblivious to the feelings of others! With teenagers such as yourselves....I have hope for the future. 🌠

I'm liking this, Abby can talk now :) and I feel that this is gonna give her more good days. I didn't quite get what the title was all about but through summer's video call, I'm guessing it has something to do with standing up for Abby and defending Autism, :) this warmed my heart because i know how people can be so disrespectful to others who isn't within the same wavelength as they are and that's wrong., they need to know their place and have manners - don't treat individuals like that, they have feelings., anyway I'm gonna stop here, because the disrespectfulness shown to others often makes me angry, nevertheless I'm encouraging y'all to keep up the great work. Summer do have a blessed time wherever you are, good luck in your endeavors and guys - take care and all the very best.

Good job Abbie(and all of you) you did a great job on the concessions stand. I have ASD and other disabilities and I HATE the R word. Now it’s used as an insult but it used be the actual medical term for Autism(well it was here in England anyway) well done Summer for standing up for awareness. Changing the world only has to start with one person. Hope you all have a great weekend. Sending you loads of AUsome hugs and love from me over here in England 💜🇬🇧

Good job girls on the “r” word conversation. That reminds me of growing up and having those same conversations with people at school. Whenever I would hear someone say that it would make me fume. That’s been probably 25-30 years ago. I had a brother 10 months younger than me and he had Down syndrome and autism. He was the best!

Sorry if this has been answered in another video and I missed it, but does/will Abbie have commands for Maverick on her DynaVox?

Great video! I was exhausted just watching all of you running around in the concession stand and I know you only showed a few minutes of what was probably hours for you. I am also proud of Summer and Kylie for taking a stand against something that is offensive to the special needs community. God bless them, I'm sure that was not easy.

As a person with a mild learning disability like me I Don't like being called the R word. I will cuss someone out or get physical!!! I was Bullied for being in special Ed all my life. But I've came a long ways I got my drivers license when I was 17 and now I live on my own, I pay my own bills, and buy my own grocerys and cook on my own. I lost my Mom in 2011 and I'm still heartbroken!!!! My Dad don't have much patience with me, and his wife Damn sure Don't have patience with me... So I'm pretty on my own now. My Mom's youngest sister helps me a lot when she can. I love my Aunt I don't know what I'll do without☺☺☺

All those reasons of why students were late, "Dad" and “I was following the ABA protocol and they weren’t having it.” are simply hilarious. The look on Summer's face when Abbie talked to Alexa was great. We're all so proud :)
