Removing subsidy and even taxing fuel would have been ok. But you dont float your currency if you dont have any competitive products, which will increase in demand via export to earn from dollar revenue. The main purpose of devaluation is to earn more revenue from export not to reduce import. It is not too late to return to a fix exchange rate yearly.

Makes sense, you remove subsidy from an economy that isn't productive, we should know it will tank the economy, then to add insults to injury, float the naira. We should know floating the naira will make things expensive, no need for a genius to explain that, and we have also observed that if fuel price increases, everything increases. So, when you do both, it's like throwing a grenade into petrol tanker
@ebuka562 ай бұрын
Paul Alaje, you're really good and spot on. But you were wrong in saying that a developing nation cannot remove subsidies and float the currency simultaneously. You don't manage an economy with emotions, you do so completely rationally (what people call without conscience). It's not difficult to decide whether you should have subsidy or not. If you cannot afford it like Nigeria it shouldn't be up for debate. As for floating the currency, it's the same thing. If you don't have the foreign reserves to defend an artificial exchange rate, does it make sense to embark on this action? Why do Nigerians love the idea of free things always without looking for a way to innovate to solve a problem, there is never any quick solution to structural problems.

@Lotanna20 Exactly the reason why we shouldn't do it. End subsidies and end 80% of corruption in Nigeria. I don't know exactly why people are against its removal. Trillion of naira that we pay for subsidies that are mostly not transparent can be diverted to cushioning its effect & build infrastructure & housing we are talking about trillions here. Tinubu is on the right track he should remove the remaining subsidies
