EP30 - Rust, Corrosion, Oxidation. How to keep it far away from your ship? We're replacing our rusty anchor hawse pipes for stainless steel ones, the capstan on the aft deck gets some well deserved attention and we're removing our identification numbers from the hull.
Schoener Tijgerhaai (Tigershark) started life in 1944 as a canadian built tugboat and she has been in my family for almost 50 years. Together with my dad, I am rebuilding this beautiful sailing ship, to get her ready for new adventures!

Its a steel boat. Corrosion is always going to be a thing. 316 marine stainless is about 70% iron anyway, so I would really doubt that combining it and regular steel above the waterline would present any issues at all. Great work. She looks great with the anchors in place!

Orange stripes on the hull, rust!?!?! No no thats the morning coffy I spilled. 🙂 Stainless (1.4404, 316L, SS2348) and steel/iron welds very well together indeed. Cover the transition of metals with paint and it will last "forever". Nice seat on the aft winch - now the crew wants a bigger sofa at the aft! :-) Great job Dad & Son!

Great to see you working with dad. The boat is covered in white paint and red anti rust paint. Can I ask what the final colour plan is and will you dry dock to do the underside/ bottom/ anti foul paint? Great videos, keep them coming. Great to see the boat being rebuilt.
@tigersharkboatworks
@tigersharkboatworks 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! The final colour plan will be the same, white hull, light grey deck, and red antifouling. The main reason is that white really helps keep the inside of the ship cool in warmer areas. It also makes it very easy for us to spot rust :). In drydock, we'll get a clean hull and fresh layer of anti fouling, apart from hull thickness survey and some underwater thru hulls etc. Thank you!

More great work and nice solutions to the issues that come up. What I am going to suggest is more an industrial application, but have you looked into an impressed current cathodic protection system for your anchor tubes? Under way the tubes are always going to be water soaked and dropping and raising the anchors is going to abrade away the protective paint. The cathodic protection system does not have to be very fancy and should be able to be fabricated for minimal cost.

Phoo, an iccp does sound fancy. We're trying to keep things as simple as possible. The new stainless pipes should do the trick, right?
@ronkluwe4875
@ronkluwe4875 2 ай бұрын
@@tigersharkboatworks Actually it could be as simple as a 6 volt battery with a couple of wires. The SS is going to be okay, it is the connection point to the steel where the corrosion is likely to occur.
@tigersharkboatworks
@tigersharkboatworks 2 ай бұрын
We're gonna monitor how it holds up. If it doesn't work out like this, we can always install a simple iccp like that in the future. Thanks!

Big respect to you and your dad ! Tough on the wallet now, are you planning to make some money by joining the brown fleet on the Waddenzee/noordzee/IJsselmeer ? Looking ahead, when do you think you can hoist the sails again, 2025 ? Also i suspect your last name is Klinkhamer, and that ship is an adult version of the kameleon. Best regards from the Philippines
@tigersharkboatworks
@tigersharkboatworks 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! We probably won't join the Brown Fleet. The ship is a bit deep for playing around the Waddensea and IJsselmeer, so we're always bound to the fairways. North Sea could be an option, but we're not really sure yet where we're going once we're finished :) It would be nice to have her ready in 2025, but no pressure. I wouldn't really call ours a speedboat, but she's also steel and bulky, so yeah, I guess :)

@tigersharkboatworks is that with all system running , you don't have much solar , fridge, auto pilot for the boat must be heavy usage. ?
@tigersharkboatworks
@tigersharkboatworks 2 ай бұрын
We have 2500Wp solar, which is quite substantial. The modern fridges are very economical, al the new electronics use peanuts, and the steering pump uses 300 watts. All together, we have energy to spare in summertime. In wintertime, we have to run a generator for an hour a day to top up the batteries :)

why you use stick welding? MIG welding is known for its versatility, making it suitable for various materials, including steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
@tigersharkboatworks
@tigersharkboatworks 2 ай бұрын
We prefer stickwelding because all we need for that is electricity and rods, so wherever we are in the world, no need to go look for argon or CO2 bottles or whatever. We do have a MIG welder, which we only use for alu :)

Thats standing still at a dock . I have worked on yachts that size . Solar at 100% capacity will be close but how much when sailing will be in the shade . And cloudy days .and night hours . No sun . Can you all hand steer . Or does steering require power .

@@tigersharkboatworks that you will, thats a heavy boat to go around on burning diesel , what does your main engine burn per hour . Ltrs 10 ? Battery bank has to be big , but if leadacid , evan bigger as can only use 60% of battery life for long life . Generators are the most unreliable thing on a boat , you go on large boats so can see this conversation is valid . Keep the great work up, respect

@tigersharkboatworks batteries storage of power and producing power , your biggest problem for the future , I have worked on sailing yachts that require more than that , batteries first to upgrade , lead cannot take the amount you need to put in quickly , miss out a generator. Very large output altinators awsome way to go , but not when burning 10 litres an hour . Can you get a small diesel engine , run on about 2 litres , and only used to create power not propulsion. With large output altinators , you have the room, save 1000s € in fuel. What do you think, ?

If I understand correctly, you never made any trial on the boat in navigation ? You don’t know his behaviour in the waves ?
@tigersharkboatworks
@tigersharkboatworks 2 ай бұрын
I don't know where you understand that from, but a quick overview of the history: Dad and Granpa got the boat in 1975 as a tugboat, spend 14 years converting it into a sailing ship and circumnavigated the world in 4 years. Afterwards, apart from a short holiday every few years, she's been sitting around, getting out of date. So now, 30 years later, we're getting her ready to sail again. Concluding, yes, we know how she behaves in waves and how she navigates :)

Hoi Gijs, heb jij geen wartel tussen het anker en de ketting zitten. Dat hoort normaal wel.
@tigersharkboatworks
@tigersharkboatworks 2 ай бұрын

Men gebruikte in het verleden altijd SB anker. Groet, Arend
