It's pretty normal for soldiers especially during ceremonial occasions they have to pass through the inspection by their seniors, so they have to check their uniforms Even have to check their neighbours uniforms, which is very normal in the army

Some of these 'tall' guards are in fact, cadets. The Army selects promising cadets & musicians to participate in ceremonial occasions. It helps training for newcomers, and maintain the standards.

As the poster above states, the outward signs of different regiments of Guards are their buttons and plumes. These are Welsh Guards with two sets of five buttons. They have green and white plumes on their left side of their bearskins.

Curious to know the ranks of theses officers please correct me if I'm wrong. Those inspecting appear to be the BM, BSM (base player) with WO2 insignia and carrying swords? and the base drum player appears to be a CSM along with the other 2 tromboneists that stood at the back who appear to be CSMs also. I could be completely wrong but would like to be able to identify them all as I watch alot of the Guards videos

Those you refer to as CSM are Colour Sgts. "CSM" is Company Sgt Major a WO2 within the regiment, not the band.

Funny you mention this. I've always learned that military ranks aren't worth anything in the bandsetting. A soldier could be commanding an admiral at that setting.

No . we used to buddy up and check each other over before mounting guard. You can be charged for dirty kit . Also when wearing the Great Coats in the winter ,the pleats at the back have to pulled round by your mate as they are not sewn in .

6ft rule never applied boy soldiers coming of age to men’s army weren’t told couldn’t join. One company of Grenadier guards had to be over 6ft know then queens Company but don’t if still exists

Right back to the Napoleonic Wars, grenadiers were chosen for size - their combat role was to carry a quantity of grenades up to the walls of a fortification and lob'em in. The grenades were big and heavy by current standards (black powder in cast iron case) and I believe they had to light the fuse before throwing as well. Did I mention courage under fire was also required?

Sadly the guards arnt what they used to be…..minimum height was 5feet 8 inches tall…..look back to the Guards in say the late 70s early 80s and their is a world of difference…..sad reflection of our declining standards…….went to Buckingham palace a few years ago and watched the changing of the guard and was appalled to see a good portion of the Forecourt outside the guard room or what used to be the guard room is now parking for cars vans etc etc……its just sad to see….run down

Who are all these midgets in the Guards band? In the Guards it was a rule for hundreds of years that all Guardsman including bandsman who double as stretcher bearers in war time, must be 6 foot or over. During WW2 my late uncle was in the Guards Armoured Division, he only just scrapped in at 5ft 11 inches as a wartime expediency measure when they dropped the rule to 5'11".

@@tonidavis1045 Yes I know, there are plenty of tall women, the army should not put tiny ones in the Guards Brigade as musicians as they do dual service as bandsmen & stretcher bearers and no tiny woman can carry a wounded soldier with his kit either on a stretcher or like a fireman over their shoulder . The London Fire Brigade has this problem of being forced to employ tiny men & women as firemen who cannot lift an adult male or woman safely out of a building on fire or down a ladder and carrying an injured adult was till Labour got into power in 1997 a requirement of fireman's training & a must to qualify as a fireman.

A friend of mine, Ken, was in Korea in the Royal Signals. His "shortish" sergeant claimed he had been in the Guards. When Ken said, "but "sarge", I thought you had to be 6ft to be in the Guards?" He replied "I was in when they need em, not feed em!" ... I do believe that there was no height requirement for the Guards Tank brigades in WW2....

Are you talking about the ones who are wearing red aprons? Some that play the larger instruments, bass drums, and cymbals wear a type of apron so as not to scratch up their belts and buttons from what I’ve read. So I suppose they don’t have to wear belts.

I have no objection to females on parade but when they are so short or so rotund that their arms swing around their hips almost outwards, they really stand out as aberrations. Do you recall that time a few years ago when a Canadian regiment mounted guard at Buckingham Palace for the 1st time since WW II. They had a tiny, tiny female officer-of-the-guard. Was it a response to wokedom or was the Canadian Liberal Party government thumbing their nose at British tradition ? Who knows ? Either was possible.

Please remember the musicians on parade sometimes only serve a year or two in a Regimental Band before being posted to a line band. They won’t/don’t have that affiliation that a Guardsman would have to that regiment. Sadly the Royal Corps of Army Music doesn’t do itself any favours recruiting fat/really short people - sign of the times.
