Would it have made any difference if you sat the pergola on the decking as opposed to creating its own footings in the ground?

Great watch, can you give us some more info on the pergola, 4x4 legs but what size was the rest, it looked very solid and I'm after making my own. Did you shape the ends yourself?

The legs are 4x4 fence posts. Get the 10ft ones. The frame of the pergola is made from 4x2 . I used a saucepan to create the curves drawing round to make my designs. You could just cut a diagonal. The sub frame is made with 4x2 and fence posts cut to 16inches Hope that helps.

You're obviously a pro or an advanced woodworker. I'm building the floor foundation for a shed using the same principles you used here and just getting the thing leveled took 2 days. For you to put this whole thing together in 5 days...Huh....WOW.. Could you share how much this entire project costs you?

Hi Mark have just seen your excellent video on building a pergola. It would be very helpful to know the sizes of the timber you used for the rafters and the frame as this would be an ideal structure for my garden. Thanks Nick

With your pergola posts, are they set into the ground with concrete, or sat on top of ground but concreted around decking frame only? Nice work!
@KAPWoodworkandbuilding
@KAPWoodworkandbuilding 2 жыл бұрын
These particular ones are concreted in a wooden frame on top of ground and screwed into through the frame and decking.

What are the top bars called and where did you buy them? The four main post how much went in to the ground how long were they
@KAPWoodworkandbuilding
@KAPWoodworkandbuilding Жыл бұрын
They are generally called joists or rafters. I buy most of my timber from Jewsons and Bradfords. There are lots of builders merchants to choose from. Generally the main posts go into the ground approx 18inches. Sometimes you have to fuse them differently. There are metal post shoes for that.

Never laid decking so maybe a silly question, but should you leave a spacer gap between boards? Guess if it’s pressure treated it will shrink slightly anyway.
@KAPWoodworkandbuilding
@KAPWoodworkandbuilding 2 жыл бұрын
No you don’t have to there will be a natural small gap as you lay them.

Yes I did have a different dog. There is definitely a theme developing. Maybe I should only do a job if the customer had a dog. 😂 We sail Saturday 28th. I’m actually planning to film it and put it on another channel. Dawn has come up with a name. Cocktails and wave’s. I’m cruising around Scandinavia . Starting a new jobs when I get back. 😃

I'm going to be doing a deck for the first time and I'm wondering would it not be easier to set the cross timbers directly onto concrete blocks with piece of dpc to reduce moisture transfer? It seems like lots of unnecessary work digging all those posts and setting them in concrete.
@KAPWoodworkandbuilding
@KAPWoodworkandbuilding 2 жыл бұрын
A decking done properly need’s to be anchored down. Of course you can lay your timber directly onto concrete blocks but you will get some movement. Also depends how big it is. With timber off the floor with good airflow and anchored down you will get many years out of it.

Thanks Bill. I don’t actually know who the music is. I use the free copyright music that comes with my editing suit. I always try to put what style feels appropriate. I’m a guitarist so I guess I will always gravitate towards guitar based music. I was working with a lot of background noise from road traffic and an airport very nearby. It’s the first time I’ve encountered sound issues. I’m thinking about upgrading the equipment I use to film but as with all things it’s about budget. If the channel continues to grow then I will invest. I only use an iPhone 12 at the moment. Dawn an I both love cruising which is what we are doing next week. She wants to film it so possibly another channel about cruising. Take care Mark

If you're early to the video, then often the video hasn't been rendered to higher definition by KZbin. Not the uploaders fault. Watch it again now and it's probably much higher definition. Hope that makes sense.
