I can relate to Kiriyama's world view, though my own views are quite tame in comparison. The feeling that simply being is causing trouble for someone else is a familiar one to me. You help others almost unconditionally, yet fear being nothing more than a nuisance for those around you. Some would call it being humble, others a state of self-worthlessness. I see my own selfish gains in whatever I do, and I hate it. There's someone else who could do more than me, be less of a burden. I minimize my contributions and give that credit to someone else, because who wouldn't do better than me? Now, I say this not in self-loathing, but as a simple statement: There's always someone more skilled, always someone born with the talent you wish you had. But there's always something you can do to make the world just a bit brighter, that only you can do.

I honestly hated her when I watched and read the series... But I sympathize with why she became the way she did. Her father should not have favored Kiriyama. He should have encouraged all three of them equally. And he should definitely not have been so harsh with Kyoko. So I sympathize with her, but I don't like the way she took out her rage on Kiriyama.

Rei is like a mirror image of me in the sense of why he and I feel depressed. I know that people who are kind to me like and love me for who I am, but I still believe that I'm terrible for not being able to pay them back and feel like a burden, but I will still help them and protect them to the death. I was an outcast most of my life and still believe it, even though I am trying to get over it. After watching the entirety of this series, I'm happy to say that this is the first anime I can turn to if I need my own pick me up. It's pure, it's lovely, it's beautiful, it's so, SO artistic, and the best i've seen hands down. Lots of love!

NHK no Youkoso, and now Sangatsu, are the only two series to date to hit me so hard in terms of their depictions of depression/mental health struggles. I think Sangatsu has a much more uplifting approach, which some may find unrealistic, but it's important nonetheless, especially for one like me who gets so easily trapped in the NHK mindset. So much respect for you for this video!

After Sukasuka, now Sangatsu no Lion? Do you intend to make a video for every under appreciated gems which became one of my favorites of the season? :D Sangatsu no Lion was the show that represents a person with depression with the best execution. Instead of making Kiriyama looks edgy or emo-ish, he actually felt perfect: A functional person that battles with depression almost everyday, had his energy depleted by guilt every time, yet keeps thrusting forward. I also love how the three sisters, Shimada, and that MVP Teacher became the best supporting characters in their own way. Their presence combined brought that second half into the best "Shounen Building Arc" that I ever saw. Not by giving him a "Hell Training Course" or by having him won seemingly impossible match, but by slowly resolving all of his internal problems that prevent him to maximize his shogi potential. Can't wait for the season 2!

Nice video. In some parts, it felt like I was reading a literature essay on Sangatsu and reading a bit deeper into the show - which is a positive thing. Thanks for making it and getting more people to watch it.

This anime is one of a kind. It does not aim for greatness unlike those big time shounen. It's subtle and calm as it goes with the flow. It's soothes our mind as if we are in Rei's point of view. I just can't help but smile most of the time and then suddenly tears fall down. A masterpiece that doesn't need words to prove its greatness.

You should avoid Bojack Horseman (an *excellent* show on Netflix) like the plague, then. But just like "March comes in like a lion" (which I haven't watched yet, but certainly will), you should give Bojack Horseman a try when you feel strong enough for it, it really teaches you hard truths about yourself and humanity as a whole that most people are hiding from.

Erica Ross you should do whatever makes you feels comfortable, and not do anything that will hurt yourself, 3-Gatsu actually kinda helped me deal with and think critically about my own issues. Like? It made me sad, but in a more temporary, 'I'm very touched by this,' way. That's just my experience with the show, though. It was unexpectedly cathartic for me. The whole show was pretty cathartic in itself, really... But I can definitely see how it can go the other way. Regardless, 3-gatsu is a beautiful, great anime.

I know this video is 3 years old, but I started to rewatch this masterpiece. I would like to point out how Kyouko’s impact on Kiriyama’s understanding of what constitutes love and care being immense. It is heavily implied she sexually abused him, on top of the physical and psychological abuse. Her relationship with him varied from beating him and saying nonchalantly “you are the scum of the earth” followed by a soothing-like voice with added sexual abuse as her idea of “but look, I do this, because I love you.” She is one of the primary reasons he feels as though he deserves to be alone and to drown on his sorrow. Many people act like her relationship wasn’t “that” bad because Kiriyama still cares about her, but abusers take control over their victims by using the love and care the victims feel towards them to strengthen their manipulation. I feel rage and intense sadness whenever she shows up, because I went through something similar. So, I think Kiriyama is not only depressed, socially anxious, but also he has a lot of trauma attached to the mental illnesses. Though, I am happy with how the series is going as he builds a healthy pathway for his future, this anime/manga helped me so much with my own mental health and overcoming trauma. This video is so good, it explains accurately what mental health is, thank you for making it!

I remember watching this when I was a bleak person, but now years have passed and I see the joys of life so to say. I still have ups and downs, but I have a move forward mindset. Those moments with the sisters and grandfather really made me feel like they were welcoming me the viewer into their home. Hope more gets adopted otherwise I'll have to buy the manga when I can.

Hello, first of all I wanted to say thank you very much for making this video about March Comes in Like a Lion, I am Spanish and after finishing watching the two seasons of this incredible series, I started looking for opinions on KZbin in the hope of finding myself with people who liked this series as well as me, to my surprise I only found people comparing it with other series that do not look like anything or that criticized it because it was "boring" or "at the beginning it was good and now it sucks", Although I do not understand much English I started looking for videos in this language with the hope of finding what I wanted, a video that would do justice to this masterpiece, and although I found some very good videos recommending the series with a lot of positivity, I have to say that Your video is the one I liked the most, you have perfectly understood the series, you have even said things that I had not noticed, it is a joy to hear how you talk about this series, how it has come to your heart, How it happened to me, so much so that I'm going to buy the manga that has recently been licensed in my country ^ ^ again I'm very very grateful for your video, I will follow your work very closely, I wish I could give you a thousand likes, a heartfelt greeting.

Sometimes.. if someone offers you kindness.. and even though you feel happy about it, it makes you feel sad and lonely at the same time. It makes no sense. But like you said. Emotions and fears aren't logical. Is it weird that I love to watch stuff that makes me cry and feel all kind of complex emotions? His depression actually makes sense I mean his parents and sister died when he was young, the rest of his blood family was garbage and didn't want him, then he was emotionally and mentally abused in his adoptive family by his adopt sister and the pressure of trying to survive to not make them suffer anymore all got to him and contributed to his depression.
