This track is more than twice the length of an average single, but it was everywhere, radio, TV and it went #1 all over the world. And to many, this was an introduction to Eminem or at least the first song they liked. Like Lose Yourself, it transcended genres, cultures and different types of audiences...

I remember when this album first came out, me and my friend got it, then spent all day at his place listening to the whole thing.... the funny thing was, the big single was supposed to be "The Real Slim Shady"... it was blowing up the airwaves at the time.... but the first song we went back and re-played after going through the album was Stan. It was so dope... so different. We knew it was going to be THE song of the album eventually... and it sure is.

I like the way you break down and go through Eminem’s life jumping across his songs regardless the release date in order to deliver an accurate insights on his career to this day. Great approach, +1 subscriber. I’ve got a request, could you break down the same way everything regarding to Eminem and ‘8 Mile’ movie? I think that most of people would appreciate, I haven’t seen a full coherent reaction/explanation in any other channel on YT, and people’d like to know more about the exact Eminem’s situation when he pulled that movie. He wrote and preformed it himself, I’m certain most of us have missed a big part of the meaning of most of the scenes. Plus the Rap Battles, the “Rabbit” character preformed by Em, his struggles, and the overlooked sides of all Eminem’s themes that came along: “Run Rabbit Run”, “Lose Yourself”, “Love me”, “8 Mile”, “Rap Game”, “8 Miles and Running”… most of the movie is based, inspírate by and depicts many of the real situations he had to went through back then at that stage in his personal life.

what if stan got the letter, this could be his answer: Dear Slim, I just got your letter, man. I wasn’t expecting it. I’ve been through hell these past months, and I can’t believe you actually wrote back. It’s weird ‘cause I always thought you wouldn’t care, but your words hit me, like really hit me. I read it over and over ‘til the ink blurred out from my tears. You know, it’s crazy. I was out of control, Slim. I had this obsession that got too deep, and I couldn’t see anything beyond you, your music… it was all consuming. My girl left me after that whole thing I pulled off the bridge. Thank God she survived. I didn’t think it through-none of it. Just wanted you to feel my pain, but it spiraled so bad. Reading what you said, it got me thinking about what I became. I turned into the kind of monster you’d rap about just so you’d see me. And I guess, I needed help all along. You were right-I wasn’t doing any of this for me, for Dido, or our future. I was just lost, trapped inside this idea of you and me being more than just lyrics connecting. It’s stupid, isn’t it? I’m trying to get better now. There’s a place I’ve been going to… therapy or whatever. I still play your music, but I see it differently now. It’s not about you saving me; it’s about me saving me. Your words kept me alive when I thought I couldn’t keep on breathing. I hope one day, if I meet you, it’ll be as a fan with respect, not a man obsessed. If you ever see Dido around, tell her I’m sorry for everything. She deserved better. I’m gonna try to be better too. Thanks for writing back, Slim. I’ll carry this with me, as a reminder that even when things hit rock bottom, there’s still a way up. Take care, man. Stan

To think, despite all the controversy surrounding Em, the HUGE pressure of repeating the success of his first album, working around the clock trying to get D-12's album finished AND concert touring for his first album STILL going on..... He comes out with THIS track, something that absolutely cemented his reputation as a "story teller" as well as completely blowing the minds of rap industry "experts" AND audiences on a GLOBAL scale. Even to this day, you can find this track playing overseas on radio stations.

In ways, songs like this are about peoples misunderstanding of empathy. Whats important when trying to relate to others is about the experiencing (perception) of events and how this impacts. This means that people can experience 'same things' such as divorce etc., thiugh this does not mean it impacts the same. So when it comes to musicians, it doesnt matter how similar we may see life events between them and us as fans, as how these events impact cannot be the same. Further point about experiencing - this, as with perception, is also impacted by previous life experiencing and what the person perceives of these and what they hold onto from them. If people understood this, it would help them in preventing them becoming Stans.

I read somewhere that Eminem thought about the concept of this song when he first heard Dido's line "got your picture on my wall, it reminds me that it's not so bad" and he thought about a fan getting through shitty life with just that idol on their wall to support them. He has that in "Sing when you're winning" and other songs as well and the more I know about Eminem, the more I can imagine how that line might speak to him.

This is the reason it squicks me out when someone says they stan a celebrity or whatever. I'm like "uh, ok do you know what that term means and where it came from" .. of course I'm like what 5-6 years younger than Eminem and we bought this cd when it came out. Karen you snapped into it fast about how badly Stan was messed up within this. I never took that line as anything more than crossing over a line of obsession not sexual, full on heebie jeebie obsession. I'm sure Em knows what happened to John Lennon, Rebecca Schaeffer, Selena Quintanilla, and likely even Dimebag Darrell. Dido's single is called Thank You.
