This track is more than twice the length of an average single, but it was everywhere, radio, TV and it went #1 all over the world. And to many, this was an introduction to Eminem or at least the first song they liked. Like Lose Yourself, it transcended genres, cultures and different types of audiences...

I read somewhere that Eminem thought about the concept of this song when he first heard Dido's line "got your picture on my wall, it reminds me that it's not so bad" and he thought about a fan getting through shitty life with just that idol on their wall to support them. He has that in "Sing when you're winning" and other songs as well and the more I know about Eminem, the more I can imagine how that line might speak to him.

To think, despite all the controversy surrounding Em, the HUGE pressure of repeating the success of his first album, working around the clock trying to get D-12's album finished AND concert touring for his first album STILL going on..... He comes out with THIS track, something that absolutely cemented his reputation as a "story teller" as well as completely blowing the minds of rap industry "experts" AND audiences on a GLOBAL scale. Even to this day, you can find this track playing overseas on radio stations.

This is the reason it squicks me out when someone says they stan a celebrity or whatever. I'm like "uh, ok do you know what that term means and where it came from" .. of course I'm like what 5-6 years younger than Eminem and we bought this cd when it came out. Karen you snapped into it fast about how badly Stan was messed up within this. *I never took that line as anything more than crossing over a line of obsession not sexual, full on heebie jeebie obsession. I'm sure Em knows what happened to John Lennon, Rebecca Schaeffer, Selena Quintanilla, and likely even Dimebag Darrell.* Dido's single is called Thank You.

In ways, songs like this are about peoples misunderstanding of empathy. Whats important when trying to relate to others is about the experiencing (perception) of events and how this impacts. This means that people can experience 'same things' such as divorce etc., thiugh this does not mean it impacts the same. So when it comes to musicians, it doesnt matter how similar we may see life events between them and us as fans, as how these events impact cannot be the same. Further point about experiencing - this, as with perception, is also impacted by previous life experiencing and what the person perceives of these and what they hold onto from them. If people understood this, it would help them in preventing them becoming Stans.
