My journey into full 4K begins today. For the last two years, I had a ps5 but for the longest time I only had HD tvs to watch my movies on. Today I was gifted a 4K tv which was surprisingly cheap so now I can watch my movies in the best quality.

I was venting to a coworker the other day about how some shows and movies are still only available on DVD even after better formats came about. I told him that I didn't understand why people weren't buying Blu rays because basically everyone who's owned a video game console in the last 20 years has a Blu ray player. He said he didn't know they could play Blu rays. I think some people are just willfully ignorant.

Given game console manufacterers are now trying to make you buy things digitally only, I wouldn't be surprised if they want to keep the fact they're the most affordable blu ray players on the market low-key so they can slowly take away your ability to buy physical media.

Wrong! Xbox series x supports dolby vision. Just activate it in the settings.

The Xbox One S and One X both also have built-in 4K blu-ray drives. The One S can't play games in 4K but it can watch 4K movies and stream in 4K. Neither the PS4 or PS4 Pro have a 4K blu-ray drive. I think by midway through last gen, having a 4K drive wasn't compelling enough alone to push Xbox consoles out the door over the PS4, but the good news is you can pick them up for hella cheap today, and there are still hundreds of supported titles between free to play, indie, old AAA, annual release, and Game Pass titles.

The original model of Wii (the vertical white consoles) can actually play DVDs via homebrew. It’s not ideal at all, just neat. I use my PS3 for DVDs and Blu-rays though

Just bought Spiderman 2 for PSP (the movie) a couple days ago and thus first tried watching a movie on my PSP just yesterday! When I was a kid and had my original PSP I kinda knew that UMD Movies existed but they were out of my reach pretty much and to be frank I wasn't quite interested - today however I just marvel at what the PSP was capable of! :)

I'm done with physical media. I either buy/rent through Vudu now or I will torrent a remux and burn my own BD-R. I am SICK AND TIRED of Amazon and their slow/delayed shipping. Every time I order something it's consistently 2-3 days late. Not worth it when I am paying $6.99 for shipping.

Its not a player problem for me. I have an LG 4K player I got for 16 bucks. No for me, its a TV still. ONE CAVEAT: The PS5 CANNOT play Blu Ray 3D films. Only PS3, and PS4, either with a 3DTV, or through PS VR

The Quest 3 combined with 4XVR Player plays 3D Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray ISOs, either through USB or internal storage, just fine. That's what I use the Quest 3 mainly for. It's great to have a personal portable Cinema everywhere. A shame That the PSVR lacks some of the features the Quest and other VR headsets have.

I now only have my PS3 plugged in cuz my Xbox 360's disc drive decided to croak. I mostly use my PS3 as a Blu ray player. My father tried to connect said PS3 to some streaming services but my PS3 said "I'm sorry David, I can't do that" If I had the money to afford a PS4 and PS5 I'd do it. Sadly I ain't made of that kind of money right now.

PS3 and PS4 also require internet access to be able to activate the function that makes it possible to play DVD and Blu-ray. So it doesn't seem to make more sense than the Xbox360 that requires you to download an app. PS2 Could play DVDs without internet access and without having to download something. But do you want something today that just works and can play DVD and Blu-ray as well as 4k you still need a player. No console since ps2 can play DVD, Blu ray or 4k without the feature being enabled, which requires internet access. So no, you can't just insert a disc and play it. As is being hinted at here. I don't own a PS5, but my guess would be that it would also apply here. Especially considering I was considering buying one at one point and more or less was told that it can be used for nothing without internet access, not even playing games.

whoever you got that information from doesn't know what they're talking about I regularly use my PS3 for watching Blus and DVD and I always have it disconnected from the internet. There is also an option in the PS5 settings to disconnect from BD Live to reduce loading times on your disc.

@shakir9898 Okay, so maybe it depends on which model you have. Because I have both a PS3 and a PS4 and neither of them can be used as a Blu-ray player because they require internet access to download what makes them usable as a player. The PS3 can play DVDs, but requires a software update to renew the encryption key, if it is also to be able to play Blu Rays. As for the PS5, I don't know how it is, since I don't have a PS5 as i also wrote. So as you can hear it is not based on information I have from others, But my own experience.

@@shakir9898 I don't have access to Wi-Fi because I'm only online via my mobile, which I'm also writing from now. Use mobile data. Bought a Sony DVD and Blu ray player, so I can manage, But I think it was important to warn others. Most people properly have wireless internet access, but if they dont it is important information to get. And also if people dont have a PS4 or PS5 it is still a lot cheaper to buy a standard Blu ray Player. And of course PS5 can only be used if it is the version that actually have a disc drive. Also i think it is only PS5 that can play 4k. The PS3 definitely can't because 4k was not invented at that time.

I tend to use my PS5 the most because it covers all formats (besides Audio CD) but use my PS3 in the bedroom because it covers all but 4k.
