Reasonable people make allowances when a non-native person is using the language. Only the vary narrow-minded would be troubled by your words. But it's always good to learn and improve, of course.

As a non-native speaker, you get a lot of leeway for nuances like that. A lot of people understand that it translates as "I don't know" and people are aware that English and Japanese are different. I wouldn't worry too much! Just one more thing for all of us to work on :)

I have Been seeing 「知らない」in a lot of JP versions of games and in contrast with 「お知らせ」、 it's safe for me to say that 「知らない」 means ; I don't know (Dismissive) / I don't care (doesn't want to be bothered) 分からない means ; I don't know (sincere) / I don't understand (Lacking in Knowledge) Been studying 国語 (native term) and it's almost impossible to learn it without being in Japan ( not using any JLPT Stuff nor Machine Translations)
@UzumakiHarutoJP

@@ReimuHakurei-itch.io- it's possible to get to N5-N3 without being in Japan, but you'll probably need to go there or somewhere with a lot of Japanese people to talk to so you can improve further than that (and yes, there's online methods too, but I know people like me don't like talking on the phone online except texting)

@@UzumakiHarutoJP the app I use 「漢字忍者」 have kanji ranked by elementary grade level and their test methods are "fill in the blank, choose the kanji based on the context and hiragana pronunciation". Watching anime with JP Subtitles is effective, but most anime that can be accessible to the public are for 中年学生 and I'm not ready for Kanji Kentei (漢字検定) Learning Kanji is the hardest part because no one (Outside Japanese Schools) could have in-depth explanation of each Kanji (dictionary-like explanation doesn't help for Kanji like 愛 & 恋).

My main takeaway from this is that Misa is hella good at English. She needs to know SO MANY English expressions to be able to provide the comprehensive explanations she gives here. I feel like it would take me a few decades to be that capable at Japanese. Secondly, I learned a lot from this video, so thanks, Misa! Much obliged.

Actually the main thing that cued me into that is how she uses fillers and side comments the way a normal english speaker would, like 12:30 where she goes "anyway" really fast to get back on topic after she distracts herself talking about star signs. It's those kinds of small expressions you don't see non-native speakers or people who aren't very fluent in English do.

OMFG... I went to Japan on an exchange trip when I was 15 and one of the students asked me "How far away is New Zealand from Australia?" (since I'm Australian). I replied "shiranai" and she looked a bit taken aback, then I heard her repeating it to one of her Japanese friends as they walked off. I had only really learnt masu stem words at the time but I had heard shiranai somewhere, so I thought it was because I suddenly stopped using masu form... But now 6 years after the fact I finally discover I replied "I don't care" 😂 In hindsight I should've replied "pretty close" but for some reason I thought she wanted a specific distance lmao.

Learn vocabulary/reading/listening skills from reading and watching stuff (whatever I like, you don't even need to finish it), or just generally using the language (but you also gotta be exposed to hard + new stuff) 3. Do practice questions for N1 (and learn N1-related grammar and vocabulary from there). 1. and 2. are just general Japanese-learning stuff, and 3. is more relevant for JLPT. Correct me if I'm wrong, but after watching this video, it feels like "わかる" might be less "understand" and more "figure out". Examples: "Can you figure out the time [for me]?" "I figured it out!" "Can you figure out English [if I speak it to you]? "What am I doing this weekend? I can't figure it out." It feels like "わかる" is a bit more of an active verb than "understand" is in English, which usually feels like it's a passive state of mind that happens _to_ someone. "Figure out" in English seems to match that activeness in "わかる". Does that sound right? Maybe this isn't a perfect translation, but it feels like it helps me out to think of this word like this.
@jtmassecure4488
@jtmassecure4488 7 ай бұрын
Yeah understand in English is a state of being instead of an action like 分かる. So 分かる is like does understand just like other verbs that would be state of being or transformative in English making translating weird.

So for what I understood, 知る is more about having knowledge of something or no interest (in negative case), whilst わかる is about certainty, being sure or not of something, hence being possible to use in phrases like 私のことわかる?, which trying to understand わかる as "understand" wouldn't make sense, but interpreting it as "Are you sure of who I am?" makes more sense, considering to be sure of something, you need to understand it in some sort of way, knowing it.
