I'm glad someone out there was inspired enough by this dev to want to dig into where he ended up and save his work. I only truly realized after watching this video that it's hard to overstate how influential he was in progressing the general Roblox building scene forward, not just showcases, and how much history was erased by him nuking his account. I actually discovered his disappearance a while ago and found the same reddit and twitter threads you did, but since the situation had no press it didn't seem like anyone cared and I resolved to just let him move on with his life, wherever he ended up. While he did somewhat inspire me in my early days of building (I actually have a building tips Dev Forum thread of his still bookmarked to this day, and revisitng that was how I found out he'd gone) I would never have been able to make a video on him with as much genuine passion and nostalgia for his work as this one. He deserves the dedication put into this video.

I’ve been a fan of SetDefault1 for several years now too and though I can’t answer why he left, I can answer some things from your video… A long while before his disappearance he was grateful for the success and support his games have received over the years and wanted to give back to the community by uncopylocking some of his showcases and writing in the description that they were free to use. This is why you see many uploads of his games, however, a few people did steal his games long before this and some have remained up since. Before leaving the platform he replaced his profile description something along of deactivating and would later delete his account using the new account deletion feature.

SetDefault was and still is my greatest source of inspiration for showcase games and I was absolutely devastated when I realised all of their games became privated, not to mention stolen to hell and back. I remember entering their Orion showcase for the first time and being absolutely amazed at the atmosphere and scenery that was created - the towering city and realistic lighting with other players watching the same view as you was a sight to behold - and to be hit with the fact that I could never revisit it again unironically made me feel empty. Dang, I forgot about him. I remember the immersive worlds he created and how much time I spent there. It’s heartening to see that there are still people who ensure legends aren’t forgotten. Many game developers shaped and molded the early days of Roblox. They made games for us to enjoy-not to make a profit or gain fame, but to contribute something meaningful to the community, sharing their ideas and dreams. We need more people like them. Nowadays, there’s just too much focus on condos, brainrot, stolen content, cash grabs, scams, and copyrighted games. These types of games have become far too popular, while creations from developers like Setdefault1 rarely get the attention they deserve. We need to fix this.
