I recently got lucky and got some servers for free, but I have no experience with them. This is the only video that seems to actually explain the basics. Good job, man :)

Thank you for taking the time to explain things so well! You've simplified this to the level of beginners in a masterful way. This is one of the most comprehensive, precise, and helpful videos I've come across on any subject.

This is really thorough, you've pointed out so many things that could catch someone out and leave them with a problem or having to purchase more bits. Those hot swap caddies can be a real pain and depending on the model some cost way more than $10 so worth checking out pricing before buying a server if some are needed. With regards fans, for me the biggest issue is I often forget just how powerful they are compared to average desktop fans. Some server fans can could easily remove finger tips!

the perc h330 mini for example shows all drives even not configured because it is in a hba mode for all not configured drives automatically. also the r630 has onbord 2 sata and one is being used for the dvd drive in the front.

as a fan and user of zfs thanks for pointing out swapping raid cards for simple hbas when going software raid as for "hardware" raid: with modern software raid is there any need for them? the come with disadvantages like hiding the individual drives from the os (unless there's a driver which allows an os to still access per-drive data like smart and disk health while still access the user data over the logical volume) and stuff like require additional battery backups
@ElectronicsWizardry2 жыл бұрын
Hardware raid controllers appear to have a shrinking market, but I think they still have a few applications where they are useful. Windows server won't boot off software raid and has bad parity software raid. I wish I could use ZFS in these cases, but sometimes Windows server is needed. There are also OSes like esxi that don't have software raid included. Hardware raid can be faster at times, partially due to the caching. The newer software raid solutions like ZFS are also typically slower than traditional raid due to the extra complexity involved.

i have a r630. it uses the 2.5 inch drives and uses the h330 mini as raid controller. i am happy with it and i dont really need more the 1.8tb per drive. i have 2 sas 1,2tb hdd drives in it for my nas storage and 4 sata 128gb ssd in raid 10 for my services like game servers and stable diffusion, the hdd are mirrored. the reason is access speed not recovery. mine came with two of the 22cores e5 2699v4 and had total of 256gb with 4 rank lrdim 32gb modules. this is way to much ram i need but i need the ranks and channels. i dont use docker or any virtualization, i only use screen.

how do you get video output from a server without a video card? does the vga just work without needing a gpu, is there some sort of graphics on the motherboard?
@ElectronicsWizardry2 жыл бұрын
Most servers have a basic graphics card on the motherboard that will give a display out even if a cpu without a igpu is used. This card is normally built in to the remote management system so they system can have it screen viewed remotely.

Do you know any modern rack mount servers which can hold a consumer grade Nvidia RTX 30xx GPU?
@ElectronicsWizardry Жыл бұрын
A lot of this depends on the model of GPU that you want to put in the server. If you are using a gpu that is a dual slot card that doesn't extend over the top of the pcie bracket it should fit in almost any server that can take a gpu. An example of a card that would fit these requirements is something like a rtx 3080 turbo with a blower cooler. These would fit in most of the off the shelf GPU servers that can be bought. If you want a 3 slot card that is taller than the pcie bracket, then you probably want a 4u case that can take an atx board as those have extra room for larger cards often.
@ronwatkins5775 Жыл бұрын
@@ElectronicsWizardry Something like a RTX 3060 or 3070, which are full height cards, double width with fans on the side and vertical radiator fins rather than running along the length like normal server gpu's have
