Oh wow! We actually have this pump and I agree with you that it is genius! It was a game changer for us as we used to pull our boat up onto the dock every time we left for a few days. That is a big and heavy job! Now we don't have to think about it. We had the original pump for a few years, and upgraded to the 2.0 as it has a handle that we use to lock it to our boat because we leave it the water all summer. Also a charger for our phone. My husband loves the button for getting the last drips of water out of the boat! I recommend this pump! It simplifies life!

I can appreciate the concept, which is very expensive . I have been using a small solar powered fountain pump for a long time, I just attacked a small hose. It was about 10 bucks, and it turns on during the day.

"Unnecessary!" "Just add a solar panel to your existing pump!" Some folks don't understand the use case for this portable pump. It's a great option for boaters that are willing to pay the entry fee. That's all it is.

Great Pump for the price point. As other have stated You would sell a lot more if the Solar panel was detachable as not every application has a direct Sun exposure installation option. Also more details like how long does it run on just Batteries etc.

That’s a nice product. I was skeptical at first but realized its advantage is in its portability. If there’s one thing I wish it had- is the option to attach a separate pickup tube. For boats that don’t have a big flat bilge area.
@jackrogers83612 ай бұрын
The only issue with that would be that it works on a float, so at that point it wouldn't have a way to activate.
@slacktide_angler2 ай бұрын

For small open boats yes but bigger boats a wired bilge will always be the way considering you’d have to mount the solar panel somewhere and also it’s not always sunny
@billbones10002 ай бұрын
Would be cool to have a model with a detachable panel for boats like mine where the bilge is located under the splash well and receives zero sunlight. Ability to mount the panel on top of the splash well would open this product up to a whole other segment of boats.
@SandmannOZ2 ай бұрын
Realistically it'd be pretty simple to make exactly this... it's just a regular ol' bilge pump & float switch, a 12 volt, 7Ah battery, and a 2.4 watt solar panel in a box. If you didn't feel like making it, you could quite probably get this one and unbolt the solar panel, replace it with a bit of plywood or perspex, and reattach the panel with longer wires to achieve that result.
@billbones10002 ай бұрын
@@SandmannOZI was thinking the same thing! Seeing that this is a rare occasion where both myself and the manufacturer are in the same country and chances are they are reading the comment section I thought I would float the idea (pun intended) on the off chance they do the work for me. I have a 20 foot center console that lives in a marina from May till October in north eastern Quebec on the north Atlantic. This would not replace my main pump but sure would be nice to stick it in the bilge along with my main one when I'm away traveling. Having a second pump independent of the boat battery would provide a huge piece of mind when I'm away for a few weeks.

Would seem ideal in an open boat you're leaving docked for the night by your place and it rains. Leaving it for a week would give me anxiety. I'd be wondering if it's charged or charged enough. The other issue would of course be with it having to sit out in the open and is not wired at all it seems like it could be easily stolen.
@thesunpump414423 күн бұрын
It is a product that you build up trust with. Put it in and when you aren't at your boat, have someone else take a peek at it. What usually happens is that the other boats fill with water when it rains and yours doesn't. They usually end up asking you what do you have that they don't.

The handle is integrated into the case design so we recommend a cable & lock or a bicycle cable through the transom support. It usually keeps the Sun Pump from walking away.

It would be even better if the panel was detachable with, say, 3-4 feet of wire and velcro straps to get it up out of a deeper bilge for sunlight.

🌴. Hey Wayne, that’s a great set up , but how do you keep it from walking away can it be locked on the boat so it doesn’t get stolen, also it would be great if the solar panel could be detached and put outside , if you had a boat were you had a engine cover or a hatch covering it that way all boats could use it , but it’s probably petty pricey?

@WayneTheBoatGuy I got my head out of my hindparts and checked their website like I should have. It really doesn't specify charge or run times. Looking at some possible components, the price is not too bad when you consider the modifications and cost of assembly.
@gillesgomez30912 ай бұрын
You have an answer in their FAQ. The battery capacity is 7Ah. The pump drains approximately 1A, so theorically it can operate during 7h. But they say 4h gives a good security margin. Besides, the panel can produce 2.5W, so it could take 2 days of sun to recharge the battery.

Will any amount of gas in the water damage the unit do you think?

I would not recommend putting the pump into boat water that has been contaminated with fuel. Gas dissolves ABS and it tends to attack the case right at the water line.

I'm starting out with a brand new Lund WC14 and have been looking at options for a bilge pump. This is a really great option, though my immediate concerns are the hefty price ($369 for the SunPump 2.0) and the security of this device. What peace of mind does one have that the SunPump isn't stolen from your open boat while you are away?
@WayneTheBoatGuy2 ай бұрын
I think $369 is the Canadian price and the US price is lower. Theft could certainly be an issue just like anything else that is sitting in a boat. Some people have to lock up their motor and hide everything - others could leave something like this sitting in a boat and never have it messed with. It seems like an unlikely stolen item because thieves probably have no idea what it is.
