I remember a documentary about Mark Knopfler with a part about his guitar playing and he played a bit in it with a pick for moment; it was bloody fantastic. Then he said "Yeah, that's not really my thing" (not verbatim), and it was like What?! There are many a guitarist who would love to be able to play with a pick like that and he was "nah!, not good enough".

At first I thought reaction videos were just a meme, a way for youtubers to easily get attention and views from fans of the music videos artists they were reacting to. Now today I finally realized why I enjoyed watching Mr Vid had a blast watching this epic Dire Straits live piece: it basically made me feel again what I felt when I first heard this song from a crappy mpeg ripoff of the official laserdisc, before youtube even exists. There are really few songs like this one, that when they are played live, transcend the original song to these levels of epicness. It's difficult to even describe what you feel, you need to express it physically. That's exactly how the people from the audience of this concert expressed their joy and also how Mr. Vid reacted to it. Thx for the memories, it made my day and beyond

I know what you mean about reaction vids. Thinking on it, though, and watching them, I came to realize it's like that thing where the first thing you want to do when you find something really cool is show it to your friends. The innate desire and even need to teach others what we know seems to be a uniquely human drive, and it may be the very thing most responsible for our dominance on this planet. Also, now I'm totally addicted to reaction vids. I particularly like the ones where I get to see how people with backgrounds and life experiences very different to my own respond to stuff I really like. So far, it seems awesome things have a surprisingly-universal sorta appeal, which makes me realize that I should be a lot more open to stuff others think is cool, even if it's not necessarily something I'd seek out on my own.

I obsessed over watching this Alchemy Live Gig as a kid in the 80s, on our betamax video player. For my 6th or 7th birthday, I had a red and white plastic fender stratocaster and a set of head and wrist sweat bands. I pretended to be Knopfler in the mirror. My birthday cake was the strat with licorice laces for the strings. I obsessed over dire straits. I marvel even more now just how God like and natural Knopfler is with that guitar. One of my favorite songs by one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Picking a favorite version comes down to taste, but for me this is not the version of SoS I'd choose to introduce someone to Mark Knopfler. With a few exceptions, I just don't think live performances work very well for reaction videos. It's not easy to play and sing at the same time, especially this song. There's a ton of energy and great individual performances in this concert clip, but it's also a bit sloppy. It fails to showcase the iconic groove, feel, and tight pocket of the original, which many consider to be the greatest strength of the song (along with Mark's singable leads). I'm sorry for bringing any negative energy, just wanted to encourage anyone hearing Sultans of Swing for the first time to check out the original studio version of the song if this live version doesn't do it for them.

@Dania Ann Alchemy is responsible for my lifelong love for playing the guitar. My parents played a lot of music at home and only in hindsight I can attribute some of the appreciation for some musicians to that. @@jameskirschling7887, yeah you're mistaken. It's just straight finger picking, clawhammer style. I've seen Mark use a pick occasionally and play slide guitar, but I don't think I've ever seen him use finger picks.

Part of what I love about his playing is just how varied it is with a variety of guitars and different techniques. So many other guitarists tend to just stick with the same sound.

Wonderful reaction! Mark Knopfler is a master guitarist! It’s hard to be objective, but he has to be one of the best ever! 2024 …. It’s been 47 years since this song came out! I’m 81, and I just discovered it and others in the last few months. Another incredible hit is Dan Vasc’s incredible Amazing Grace. There is a lot of fantastic, impressive, heart-warming, exciting, and very good music out there from all years. I,m really glad to find so many people who are so appreciative of all kinds of music!

@@FloridaManRacer you want to know how lucky.... My Dire Straits story... It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 PM... A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won 2 tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's Brothers in Arms tour show (1986) at the Boston Garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no he looks at me and says would you want to go? I respond in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day... we picked up the tickets at the door... I couldn't believe it they were sixth row Center on the floor I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second Encore song, it was really a very well-done show I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

A Honky Tonk - is a bar with live music! I’d call a smaller bar with many “regulars” there, often a country bar - a honky tonk. You said once you weren’t sure if, as a black man, you’d be welcome in a “honky tonk” - fair enough question - but, it’s about energy - and YES you’d be VERY WELCOME!

Somebody told you it's "a beer joint" huh? That just means some place that sells beer - a bar. A Honky Tonk is way more happenin' than just a beer joint. It's gotta be a hoppin' place (typically not very big) with some live music and and people dancing, damn near a party!
