Fred thanks for this video. In 2010 I stumbled on websites of some some American goat farmers who preferred to farm African dwarf gifts specifically the Nigerian dwarf goats for various reasons some of which are resistance to diseases and good meat etc. So they farmed these goats in the USA. I like South African goats bcos itbwas said they had better meat etc. I have suggestions. Instead of going all the way to South Africa, have you explored Agric institutes and universities in Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon etc. Who knows, at least you may find one or two solutions that may work. You said in video, you do not know how local or native goat species survive without all that care. That particular trait is needed if we must survive. It may not be that our local species will all time be uneconomical or unsuitable. If we are to survive on the long run, we should have to work our breeds, crossed or improved whatever.. If we humans can improve and do not need to be replaced, certainly our animals and plants can find value if we look hard enough. African governments at all levels fail woefully to support our businesses. Skill sets is an easy solve if the government monetize the labour and formalize the work conditions after ensuring the farmer is cushioned and wedged for good ROIs. Lastly I will encourage that farmer form associations by geographies till you have West African Farmers associations etc Most businesses and trades have these associations and so thru cooperation problems and solutions are shared. You can also get investors from across Africa specially from the West coast. Some countries upset local and national economics due to unprogressive politics and internal strife like Nigeria. People from such places with money could be willing to invest with sincere and focused farmers like you while they can help open markets for your products. Opportunities for progress seem.endless even now that there are dedicated efforts like your enterprise on ground. All Africans should be encouraged to do trans boundary agro business. Livestock farming in Ghana is really challenging especially for new generation farmers that want to really follow proper animal husbandry. I think we the new generation/modern farmers need to come together and form partnerships or a coop to be able to solve some of the current problems we are facing. I contacted you back in 2020 when you were in Cali going through training at one dairy farm, but since then we have not talk again. I faced similar challenges and lost a lot of money due of my farming concepts. The people did not understand why I brought in a bailer, silage chopper, tractor and all those tools when I do not have animals yet. Why I am stocking feeds when I do not have animals yet. These were foreign practices to Ghanaians, it was challenging even when you are on the ground. Everyone collapsed when I left and went back to the States, because they did understand what I was doing and sometimes the willingness to learn was also part of the problem, even though I know change is difficult. In terms of the mineral supplement, Contact the poultry feed manufactures in Kumasi some of them where willing to assist with the formulating concentrate, Ginease ghana limited in Kumasi also have distilled Malt grains. The vaccinations and the medications were my biggest challenges and my plan was to bring them from the States, some door to doors shippers in new york can deliver the vaccines and the medications between 4-6 weeks.So if properly planned you can solve the problem and its will be cheaper than getting them some South Africa. Also there is a Vet school in Tamale, I will advise you go recruit from there. All the vet techs I contacted graduated from there before furthering their education. Trust me, I understand your challenges and I believe if we come together we will be able to overcome them. Thank you.

I don't understand why most African farmers feel they must turn KZbin farming into a class or force feed folks into farming. I think you all should just show what you do and let's judge your success and decide if we join or not. Don't go farming if you don't have farming interests in you. I am a cattle racher for 20yrs now. My success started just 5 yrs ago. Imagine that😢. Fred, I import most of my meds from USA(California) and for some i administer the same medications prescribed in the hospitals just calculate dosage based on weights and age. Tricky but works majic. Amoxicyline, Flagyl, Tetracycline are the same as what we take but 4-8× stronger. Many of our meds were tested on Goats, Rats, Rabbits, Pigs and Cows before humans tests. It has been a big relief for me. I run my tests in human labs as well to be sure which illnesses I am treating. Africa is poorly equipped in medicine and chronically and extremely deficient in livestock health. I am blessed to also be in the medical field and that saved my farm. Look for workers who have no aspirations of doing anything else but farming. They are usually about 30-40yrs in age, less educated but have honor in their work and teach them. Build from the local practice and gradually modify the approach to the modern design. It helps with the transition. Don’t think American farming will immediately work in Africa(😢). Grow gradually with incremental success. I started with 5 cows then 10 now very big herds. Don’t bring book to the farm, study your farm instead. I have more but be blessed with all you do. Thanks.

Dear Fred: You hit all the right bottoms and I honestly think the problems confront real farmers come in bundles and they are really frustrating. Skill set, the right farming techniques, agro-chemicals, financing, dishonest farm hands etc are some of the militating and debilitating factors confronting us and we are left in the wild to dry. Ironically, we are being told go into farming! I have been up all night thinking hard on how to make it right because I just can't give up. My greatest inspiration is listening to forward thinking farmers like you who keep it real. Personally, I have practically lost all my goats, sheep, grasscutters, rabbits and snails for a myriad of reasons. I have about 50 acres of land for my dream farm. What has kept me going is my solid belief that agriculture holds to the future of this country. However, we need great, energetic and proactive minds like you to keep our dream alight. I am currently undergoing a 10months farmer training program in accra, botwe which is facilitated by university of ghana and the Leventis foundation. This program teaches young upcoming farmers about livestock and poultry with 90% practicals and 10% theory. Most investors who knows about this training comes around during graduation to hire skilled farm hands. I have my own farm that i was starting with no any knowledge so had to take advantage of this training and so far, i can recommend it to every upcoming farmer to get involved. Thanks fred❤

Most of my goats miscarried but I realized that it is as a result of the medium and length of transportation. Also the sharp change in feed and environment. 1I would advise anyone to buy young goats who are not pregnant. 2. Ask for the kind of feed and medication that the goat eats from the one you are buying from. 3. Introduce the common feed in your region gradually. 3.

Hi Fred, thanks for sharing this. Skills are really had to come by, what we need is to Africanise farming. It’s not a word we use but we need to join hands and create a group of African farmers. Imagine you, Hammis,Bwoogi, Roy, Value farm, my self and other farmers from Kenya, South Africa and other countries in Africa coming together and sharing skills, feeds market, and skilled labor force. I always bring back mineral blocks from the U.S. in my suitcase when I visit the States. But that is not sustainable at all. Hello Fred, thanks again for keeping up with the good work and the sharing of knowledge. I would want to contribute by saying we lack the skills and services due to viable market players or contributors. For example , the issue of lack of vaccines or adequate and sufficient vaccines is just due to the fact that people like you and I are now coming up. In a nut shell, no one would do a business that won't generate revenue. If the customers don't exist the producer will certainly not exist and to be fair most of the animal farms in Ghana are done through traditional methods through open grazing, issues of health and medication are not majorly priotized. Just like how you started bringing in the breeds from South Africa, it created an avenue where people now can buy from you, same can be said for the grass. If there isn't a market, more essentially customers it beacomes difficult for one to supply a service or product. Once the industry is seen as stable and grows, more people will get involved, naturally developing a market players and industry ( farmer, vertinary, feed supplier, transporters, sales representatives of produce, farm managers, equipment suppliers and operators, etc). Hi Fred ... in relation to the missing nutrients I believe there is a much more local solution to that. Check out the nutrients contained in plantain/banana peels. They're quiet high in fibre & all the other nutrients you mentioned. You asked how those farming local goats do it...that's what traditionally we've fed them. Check it out

Fred , the challenges you highlighted are same across Africa...... We do not yet have farm focused businesses in the continent but I see investments coming into that space as more people go into commercial farming. My biggest challenge has been trusted workers, & access to quality drugs & vaccines ...... I am currently testing the use of plant extracts to keep livestock healthy , if that comes out well, I'll be glad with the reduced cost & convenience that comes with it. One way to solve especially the medication issue is actually to create more farmers such that the demand for these medication will attract investment into it........ But in all of this. Farming still is to me a profitable venture.,.....& a lifetime thing. Thanks for sharing

Here is my take on farming. I invest more in the land than the animals because farmland in Africa don't loose value mostly. Animal farming is a risky business. I have lost thousands of chicken layers, goats, sheep and cattle but the land still and even apreciated in value. My current approach is to maximize land and agricultural investments while slowly increasing animal investment. Cattle and sheep worked so far for me (good market and cheap feed). And yes we still lose some but it's normal. Thank you sharing!

Fred I think feeding is key. However it takes a huge chunk of a farmer’s cost. If u can make ur own feed, it will be best. Buying commercial feeds will make ur cost go through the roof

Hi Fred, instead of outrught stoppage of the poultry because of high cost of corn, why not plant maize, allow it to dry and harvest it for your poultry. People who make profit with poultry are people who plant corn and make feeds themselves.

Thanks Fred, to be quite frank Ghana is lucking behind when it comes to Animals health, no drive for a change, farmers are disempowered by a huge obstacles in their paths, even new initiatives fail far too often due to cooperation from the authorities, no reglementation when it comes to the control of fake medicine in the markets, restrictions on importation of medication, the Government doesn’t have a vision which is a key of producing useful change in this sector, often times when new initiatives are introduce they faded into oblivion due to proper management and leadership.

Farm worker and feed is really stressing me. My worker just left without informing me and I suspect he never planted the seeds I bought from your shop because it never germinated. Access to medication and vet is also a problem, I had to learn everything from the internet to be able to treat my livestock. I live in Accra and visit my farm in the Eastern Region at least twice in a month. My brother you are trying.

You should have travelled down to do the planting yourself. To make a success out of farming, you must be deeply involved yourself. I am just starting my farm. I took 2weeks leave from work to travel down about 1000miles distance to the farm to start the fencing, farm house and at the same time I planted the seeds. I will return in about 2 month's time to put the animals together and start running the farm. My wife might have to stay back for some weeks to work with the farm manager for things to transition as expected.

There are a number Agric schools in Ghana, Kwadaso and Adidome. They put out quality graduates. Wouldn't be a bad idea to lease with them. As for the university grads, a lot of the time, they never intended to get into faring in the first place, but do it out of necessity, so they are never ' into' the career.

Do you not have support from your Department of Agriculture? They should be able tot help you with sourcing beside they deal with other farmers like yourself. Farming is challenging and success takes time but I think farming needs to be mixed to see better results, don't just do livestock, do crops as well. Use manure from your livestock to grow your crops. Whilst you are waiting for your goats to increase you could grow crops like spinach weekly you make income, cabbages within 3 months if all goes well you can harvest etc
