I started raising quail in Aug. I live in the inner city and they are the perfect size for me to have them on my back porch. I processed my first 2 quail over the weekend. I had 5 roosters. I kept 3. I did mine the same way your did yours. I have 9 -2 week old chicks growing and 30 eggs in the incubator ready to hatch on the 13th of Sept. I am planning on grilled quail for holiday dinners.

You are a blessed man. I love the fact you keep God up front and are raising your daughters to be self reliant. I have raised my 4 girls not to depend on any man for anything. I made some bad choices in life and this was my dream. I live it thru your videos now. Being 54 I dont know if I will see it but it's awesome to see what the lord has given you and how you work to take care of what he has given you.

This brought back memories I have as a teenager working at a commercial game bird farm in the 70s. They did have all the equipment such as a scalder and a deplucker designed for game bird. They raised Quail, Chukkars and Pheasants. We clean a couple hundred in a day. I need to send you a Cajun Homesteader shirt.

I was very squeamish at first when we did our turkeys but I am getting better. I let my husband do the deed when it's chicken slaughter time and I force myself to watch. I may have to do this by myself one day if we run out of food and times get dire. My husband is a truck driver and I will have to do it alone one day. I always try to prepare myself for harder times just in case. It will still be tough to watch and do but it will become easier as time goes by.

Just so you know. Go to a home depo store or mobile home store n you can buy anchors that are around 4 foot or longer that twist in the ground..you can also get the straps that connect to the anchor. Place the anchors on each side of the building, place the straps over the building n tie your building down so the wind won’t b able to move it. Like they tie mobile homes down. Good luck n God Bless.

I love quail! When's Dinner??
@calvinh.88825 жыл бұрын
Those Quail made me hungry! lol. As for the pigs eating them, they love things like that. We had 2 100 acre reservoirs on the ranch that were both full of bullfrogs, so a couple of times a year we would go frog gigging and get at least 100lbs. of clean frog legs, we bagged in 1lb, packages, so that left us with over 100lbs of heads guts, and we fed them to the hogs and they would fight over them. Hogs love eating bullfrogs. We always had around 10 hogs or more a year. It depended on how many employees we had working for us because every year when we butchered the hogs we gave every employee half of a hog. And for Christmas bonuses, we gave everyone $400 gift cards to Publix Grocery store. That may sound funny to some, but I learned if you give people cash they would just go blow it, and the best thing to do for people is to make sure they have food.

Hey Dutch, do tame quail taste like wild quail? Alex said it tasted like dark meat chicken. I’ve never eaten a tame quail. Wild quail taste nothing like chicken to me. It has a taste all its own. It’s my favorite out of all the bird meat.
@CaroleMinxBlanton5 жыл бұрын
Man, y'all had a big straight wind come thru. That is crazy how it moved it. Thank goodness there birds are ok. Interesting clean and cook. Been yrs since I've had quail. Granny cooked it some way. Looks good y'all! @Dutch, sure you're gonna have room in the freezer for all that meat? You've got to have another chest freezer. My daughter and son in law have a 10 acre place with a pond they've stocked with catfish, large mouth bass and white perch. And she's going to do your raised beds next yr. She's got a green thumb. Lol, she has mint and other herbs going crazy. She said she just didn't know what to do with them. I looked at her and said, don't you remember me drying out wild medicine and herbs, hanging up in the kitchen window. Click! light went on. Oh yeah she said. Next time i was over she had mint and rosemary hanging to dry. She's loving it. Helped birth a calf and fix the heffers stuff that was out. She had a tuff birth. Living in the woods, swamps eating gator and fresh eggs she's in heaven. With the rabbits and chickens to eat. This way of life is right up thier alley. Two freezers full of moo and oink and oh yeah old hammer claw the 7' gator they got 40# of tail meat from. That's the only thing I'll miss living down here is visiting on the back porch in the evenings and listening to the coyotes and watching my grandson climb everything lol. He'll be up to visit in the summer tho. She said that donkeys go chase coyotes. They lost twin calves one night to them. So they're thinking about getting a donkey. Ever heard of donkeys going after coyotes? Blessed day again. Y'all be safe in thise lil storms. Gonna be some nice cool weather next week up home. Enjoy your Holiday!
