Yet another excellent video! Verses a regular skew, this does seem faster and certainly easier and smoother for coves. I had mentioned Rude Osolnik in the other exploration of this tool type. He would go into his shop around 2:00 AM and knock out 60 candlesticks by 6:00 using something very much like these tools, I think a wider version. Then breakfast and going off to teach. Your own production quota must be approaching something like this. So we appreciate the time investment in these videos all the more. Thanks, Greg

Unbelievable skills with a fantastic tool! I have a Sorby master spindle that is a very sweet tool that I just bought. I can cut end grain shavings that remain intact across the whole face that are probably thinner than a human hair. Super smooth no sanding needed, but it is harder to not leave slight ripples in the surface, compared to say a detail spindle gouge. It is similar to this tool but it is wider and much thinner in profile. I’m impressed with it but I feel I can’t be as aggressive with it like you are with this tool because it’s a fine line between a perfect cut and a catch. I haven’t had a significant catch with it but I have never cleared wood like you have here. I must have this tool!! It looks so flexible! Your ability with it is mind boggling and I must at least try to make one and see if I can approach using it like you do! Thanks again for sharing this with us all! You are the man!

I repaired and made turning tools and handles to learn on a simple spindle lathe. I like how you made those spindle gouges. Just need a simple piece of quality steel(M2?) and something to grind with. I still need a small spindle gouge so I will be giving this a go. I have a suggestion for you. Once you get your gouge shaped well, move to a much slower grinder or wet wheel or slow diamond wheel or variable speed angle grinder......something that will not burn the tools edge. I could see straight away that your edge was soft and burnt. Thought for sure you would have fixed the edge off camera, but in the end you showed the tip edge was bent over. I am surprised you were able to do such fine work with that edge. No excuses, all you turners with finer tools LOL Imagine how good you will be with better steel and an edge that stays sharper longer. Should never bend lol ;-) I will have to make some spinning tops for practice, when I get or make a small gouge, and get my shop renovated/repaired further. I plan on a nice mallet or two to get started turning, again. Made a few things a decade or so ago. I just made my first paste waxes. I am anxious to try it on lathe projects. Amazing on tool handles, table saw, etc...

@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 6 ай бұрын
Thank you Mark, ohh the list is bigger every dan on my side as well😀 Well there is a few drawbacks, this smaller one can vibrate a bit if you are agresive like I am sometimes and if not carefull it can skate over which ruins wood a bit but other then that Works great

Hi Tomislav, hope you’re well. I have taken delivery of 3 new tools and thought you may be interested in them after watching your skew gouge video. The tools are the Jason Breach box refinement tools. There is a modified bedan type straight tool, a negative rake curved scraper and an asymmetric ground 1/2” skew which is used without a handle. You should definitely check them out if you haven’t done so already as the grinds on them are really interesting. Oh, meant to say, they are made by Henry Taylor.

I have seen a number of variations of that tool, but never one with a concave top. That makes sense though. I have a number of Doug Thompson's fluteless gouges, which are similar, but don't have the top concave like that..... Tops are fun, but those are too small for me. Look up Gasing tops, from Malaysia. They are 8 to 10 inch diameter, and have a metal ring on the outside, and will spin for 5 or so minutes in dirt. Heavy cord to spin them with...... Some times bigger is better....
