Here's some information on this King: King George wasn't actually all bad of a guy. His wife was princess Charlotte and unlike most Kings of the past, or his sons, he had no mistresses. He was actually very loyal to his wife and lived happily until he started having mental illnesses. America described King George the III as a Tyrant, but during the early years of his reign he was a constitutional monarch. When the American Revolution ended, He told John Adams that even though he was the last to agree with the idea, the separation of the colonies and Britain was inevitable and that he will be the first King to meet the friendship of America as an independent country. King George cared much about his children, and expected them to follow his virtues. When his kids decided not to, the King was greatly disappointed. King George's health wasn't really great. he had mental illnesses and talked for hours and doctors had to calm him down. During the Napoleonic Wars, the King started to get better, but soon his illness returned. Soon he became blind because of stress over the death of his favorite daughter by the end of the year of 1811, he became permanently insane. He soon developed dementia, and couldn't know what was happening around him, like how he was declared King of Hanover or that, sadly, his wife had died. He died 6 days after his 4th son. His last children that succeeded him died without leaving children. Princess Victoria, the only legitimate daughter of a Duke, took over and Became one of the longest living Queens. King George died at the almost the age of 82, being one of the longest living and reigning monarchs, only outlived by Queen Victoria and Elizabeth the II.

I think that the King George songs are all "traditional" style because it's showing how Britain is living in the past. You'll also notice that all 3 of these King songs sound the same. It's to show how america is going through a revolution and changing while the british rulers remain unchanged.

Everyone remembers George III as "the mad King". Whilst it is true that he "went mad" in his later years, we have to remember that George rules for 60 years. He starts going mad in 1810. By this stage, he has been king for nearly 50 years. George III was, in fact, one of Britain's greatest ever Kings. As King, he was known for his huge capacity for work. Many of his letters to ministers are not only dated but also the time at which they were written is noted to the minute. He had a great interest in the generation of knowledge to the benefit of the nation. Much of his garden at his palace at Kew was given over for the study of botany and opened to the public for free twice a week. At Richmond Palace, he built an entire observatory just to view the rare event of the transit of Venus. He even took detailed notes of the event. He was one of the most cultured Monarchs. Started a new collection of books, 65,000 of which were donated to the British Museum. George III took great pity on others suffering from mental distress. In 1786, he was attacked by Margaret Nicholson, who tried to plunge a pudding knife into his chest. She was immediately rough handled away. George cried out, “The poor creature is mad. Do not hurt her she has not hurt me” and ensured she was taken to Bethlem Hospital for treatment. George was exceedingly humble for a king. He preferred to eat frugally, breakfasting only on dry toast and weak tea. When he was taken to Kew for treatment, the kitchens were in a separate building. A housekeeper recalled years later, that the King insisted on bathing in the kitchens to save the servants trouble of carrying over the hot water. Indeed, when Historic Royal Palaces restored the kitchens in 2012 we discovered a fine late-1700s bath tub stuffed up the chimney. It could only have been George III’s. George III is distinctive amongst kings by being largely faithful and loving towards his wife Charlotte. Together they had 15 children, who were the apple of his eye. Visitors to Kew and Windsor were often caught by the sight of the King playing with his children. In 1785, Mrs Delany noted the “beautiful babe Amelia playing [with huge pleasure] with King upon the carpet ”. Although it is unlikely that the King ever changed a nappy, he was heavily involved in the lives of his children visiting the nursery every morning at dawn to enquire how the children slept in the night. He also did a great many things for the country. He was staunchly opposed to slavery. George wrote a document in the 1750s denouncing all of the arguments for slavery, and calling them an execration and ridiculous and absurd. George never bought or sold a slave in his life. He never invested in any of the companies that did such a thing. He signed legislation to abolish slavery. During the War of Independance, Approximately 20,000 freed slaves joined the British, fighting for George III. In 1783, they were all given British certificates of freedom. It is under George we get the Act of Union, that created the United Kingdom. There is so much more that can be said about him. Really he has been imperfectly remembered by most people.

The man who plays the king is Jonathan Groff, voice of Kristoff from Frozen and actor for Jesse from Glee. And it wasn't necessarily supposed to be more like a "normal" Broadway song. Lin's inspiration was The Beatles for this song. I think it was to show how behind The King was compared to everyone else's more modern style of rap.

I love the way Lin wrote King George. He acts like an weird combination of both an estranged lover and a manipulative parent. Lines like “You’ll be the one complaining when I am gone”… Sound familiar? ‘Oh, maybe you’ll miss me when I’m dead!’ Lines like that, combined with ones like ‘so don’t throw away this thing we had’, all really come together to display how deranged he was.

Here in Britain King George III is known for two things; he's known as the king who lost America and he's known here as Mad King George, he went so insane that his son had to take over royal duties. This all happened after America was lost so as a British person there are so many clever duel meanings, hidden messages and word play it's a great song!

2:42 King George III did kind of famously go mad - not as delusion as some people like the writers of 'Blackadder" put ie (Society pages of the newspaper - "King talks to tree, phew what a looney") - but still mad. From what I can tell it was mostly suddenly shouting or losses of temper but apparently there were also one or two cases of convulsions and having to be sat on by his staff. His eldest son Prince George (later George IV) was declared Regent when he was declared insane - by all accounts that was a huge mistake.
