I really, really love this mentality. I used to hate my voice, and HATE being a baritone/bass. Because of this channel and your courses (among other things), I love my voice now. I love my thick, rich natural tone. I love the fact that I can pull that range up into the fourth and fifth octaves like I always dreamed of. I love that I'm making my own music now, and making this album that truly means a lot to me. It's truly what keeps me going.

A while ago I was getting takeout and waiting for it to be ready and I got to talking with a stranger who was also getting food and after exchanging conversation he told me a lesson which is invaluable in all aspects of life. If you don't love yourself, you can't love someone else. The words stuck with me because you can apply it to so many aspects of life, love your own voice before you love someone else's for example. I struggled with the same thing as the comment you where reading but it is as much or more of a mindset as a skill issue when you are starting out. Thank you for your videos and by extend life lessons!

I still struggle to bring myself to listening to my own voice. However I noticed something... When I try to sing in a certain way, or 'good', it almost always makes my skin crawl. However when I approach it from a emotional standpoint, it's often hard to argue with the results. The tricky stuff is geating into that headspace though. I know it's easier said than done, but you really need to get comfortable with getting vulnerable and then just go for it. Because that's really the logic behind being your own harshest critic. It's your ego that is not able to take the criticism. To ease the pain you look for excuses and eventually give in and quit. I believe that if you are sincere, technicalities are just knobs you can twist and turn.

Discernment and judgments about all things are important, it’s how we steer our way through life, but when the judgments about our voices are so harsh they stop us from learning more about the mechanics of singing, stop us from practicing,…. Those are judgments we simply can’t reconcile with any kind of success. The human voice is a precious gift and starting with the fact that we have one, I think we should be thankful.
@SubStarLex2 жыл бұрын
Man, this is great advice, it happens that we have specific wants regarding our voice, usually defined by our inspirations, so we get frustrated when, after hours upon hours of practice, we can't sing that specific song we like so much, or we can't make a specific sound we want in our sonic palette, and the result is all those negative thoughts regarding the qualities of our own voice, when you probably already have what's needed to create your own songs and melodies, or maybe just singing something from another singer or band... It happens to me that singing random melodies or improvising with my voice tends to sound so much better than forcing a specific melody or sound I like and practice, even more important, sometimes you just need to rest from forcing all this from your voice, try something new, something different, and then get back and try to sing that one song, and maybe you'll be surprised at your own qualities.

I was one of those people who hated his voice due to a theater director telling me in front of a room full of other teenagers that I should do something else. 20ish years later, listening to and trying the stuff you put out here on youtube I've been able to find some things that I kinda like. Not ready to do it in front of other people, well with the exception of trying out the whistle register thing when my daughter was screaming at those pitches. The look on her and my wife's face was pretty priceless. Thanks dude!

This is great advice, I used to hate my voice in my teens and 20s, and when I started producing my own music, I felt like I needed to get better vocalists on my tracks than myself. But I started really trying to take advantage of technique to elaborate on my strengths and work down my weaknesses, and now I’m my 30s, I am a vocal coach at a local music school! And with the right mix of post production sauce, I’ve learned to really appreciate and take pride in my voice! Musical journeys start in all sorts of different places, but they have to start somewhere.

Preach, bro. Everyone hates their voice played back to them at first. I was fortunate to find myself as the only guy willing to try to do harmony/backup vocals for a cover band I was playing guitar in when I we like 19-20. There is something to be said for just getting through 100 gigs. You'll get used to your voice, you'll set up and tear down faster, you'll learn a toothpick can fix that problem of a strap screw coming loose... At the end of the day, you can't get better at something by never doing it.

Nice discussion! One thing I think is really important is to SOUND LIKE YOURSELF. Some of my worst habits that held me back and have taken a lot of effort to break were from consciously or subconsciously trying to mimic the sound of singers I liked, especially the ones with very unique voices. When you realize those singers sound so recognizable BECAUSE they have unique voices, and they wouldn't be that way if they were trying to imitate someone else -- that's when you have the lightbulb moment. Work with what you've got. An analogy: if you have a saxophone and you spend your whole life trying to make it sound like a clarinet, not only are you going to be eternally frustrated, but you're also not going to learn how to make the saxophone sound its best, and it's likely that other people won't find it enjoyable, either. It's smart to listen to the styles of other singers and learn how to carefully adapt some of their "flavor" into your own singing, but I really think this should only be done once a person learns how to get a solid, healthy, resonant tone and range from their own voice first. If you build your foundation with somebody else's voice, you won't find your own, and might do a lot of damage in the process!

The truth is, we all have a ton of different sounds to our voice. When we say hmm, uh-huh, wooh when cheering (head voice), hey when shouting and all of the different ways we use our voice. Most people's problem when they are totally stuck is that they want to only sound good to them and don't realize they need to explore sounds and do things that sound bad or merely something that isn't the final result they want when singing a song. It's definitely a mindset.

Thanks Chris! Awesome tip! I appreciate that. I think the thing that I currently like most about my voice is that I know there is so much untapped potential. I'm not sure if that's the best way to put it though becase I'm not specifically thinking about the quality at this point. I'm referring to the potential for stylistic variety. I know I can do a whole lot of different things with my voice including some crazy stuff. For the guitar players out there I'll put it like this, many vocalists have one or two great stomp boxes on their board. I'd say I have a multi-effects pedal. I guess the trick for me is learning how to tap into all that potential and develop it to the max.

I love your videos man. They really help me keep going with music. I've played guitar for a long time but only recently tried singing. It's true what you say about recording yourself. You do get used to it. Then you start hearing cool qualities. I'd like to tackle vibrato. I still can't tell if it's considered an advanced technique , or if it's supposed to be simple? Too many people just say "it's natural. Let it happen". I think about it like guitar playing. Some techniques are deceptively difficult and others are relatively simple once you get the proper techniques down. But singing with vibrato is frustrating me. If I do it slowly it feels like I'm using different muscle groups than when I try to speed it up. Sometimes more compression and higher note choices make it easier to speed up. But then I lose it. Then sometimes I'll be in a lower range and I nail a nice pulsing vibrato. But then it feels totally different in other ranges. It's frustrating. I try to isolate the exact muscle groups and I'm just baffled. The best sound I've gotten so far is when it feels like my entire upper body is engaged. But that's not exactly "relaxed"?? Some people make sheep sounds, as an example of a vibrato going too fast. I can do that no problem. And that sheep sound feels nothing like any other vibrato I've found. If vibrato is simply that "sheep bah" sound, but slowed down, then I've been doing it wrong. It's like one sound is just my vocal folds letter air flap by, and the other sound is my larynx flapping up and down. I'm rambling. Love your videos dude.

Found out recently I was pushing way too loud trying to match what I heard in rock, and realized that singing at a much more moderate and balanced volume, like alone with soft piano or something, makes my voice much more agile and endures longer. I realized I'm probably singing unhealthily with too much tension to reach those volumes I hear that actually aren't even being sung as loud as they appear on the record. I forget sometimes that my voice in a mix is going to be amplified above the instruments so I don't have to constantly work to get over drums or something. Now it's time to undo that bad habit. Thought it was me all along, getting halfway into the chorus and seemingly running out of stamina. I thought I was tensing up and I was always trying to find a placement that worked. Turns out I was just basically blowing out my endurance and not actually changing anything about my usually healthy singing approach. That gave me a bit of confidence, knowing I actually am singing OK, it's just I've been demanding impossible things of my voice, like singing loud enough to be heard two houses down in a rock setting. (Maybe in an opera setting that's doable)

The next test was putting it online so other people could hear it. I was utterly astounded by the comments that followed… expecting polite “That’s nice” and I got remarks like, you’re like the love child of Cornell and Kotzen, or sounds like Oni Logan etc etc. While I don’t believe the hype, it has given me the confidence to have completed 3 albums and we’ll into a 4th! In addition to this, I would say that you have to embrace theatre, drama, and even pretense to a degree. Just try singing how you would like to sing: use your imagination, start low volume (let the mic do the work for you) and imitate. Go from there. Establish a base and then modify.
