G'day Marty, a tip for mulching is. Before you mulch the garden it's important to make sure that the soil is thoroughly hydrated. Then the new mulch layer can do it thing right from the start. As if when you add a layer of mulch on not so moist ground it takes a little while for it to start working. I've been utilising the no-dig, living green mulch now for a couple of years and it's getting better every year now. I also have been starting grow my own chook food in this last lot of rain. Tip #2. It's really cheap to buy all of your green mulch and bird seeds from your local supermarket from the pet food isle and the dried bean, peas lentils and other whole grains used for soups ect. You get a lot of seeds for very cheap, they grow very easily and the chickens will enjoy the fresh unsprayed grains and the garden will benifit from the living roots in the soil and the freshest green mulch if when you do a chop and drop. I hope this can be of great assistance for you and everyone else in these hard times we are in.

Great advice Aaron, so true that soil needs to be hydrated before adding. I will try and remember mentioning that in future content. I like the concept of growing and sprouting greens, I have started to implement that also. We can always learn so much from each other. Appreciated Marty

Hey Marty, you mentioned grass clippings as mulch mats up and blocks the rain. If they are fully dried first, that doesn't seem to happen. I lay them out on concrete in the sun until they are dry. Having said that, I use mostly woodchip around my fruit trees and cane mulch in the annual beds. Making sure the soil is moist before adding mulch is pretty important too. Cheers!

Great info Marty. We have flooding problems when it rains heavily here. Woodchip gets washed into our drains and blocks them. We find sugar cane mulch works better for us.

Shredded bark mulch is a great grow medium and worms love it. But because it's shredded, it'll break down faster, but it'll Add nutrients to the soil to feed the soil. I've actually used corn cob bedding as mulch.Wendi phan on her channel used hemp as a mulch .

Have you tried mulching with coffee chaffs? I recently gave it a go, and I do not recommend it lol. The chaffs matted up together, and ended looking like soggy wheetbix that had hardened up. How close do you mulch to the base of a new plant? Is it bad to get mulch into the dig hole of a new plant? I always see bits of sugar cane in the soil when I plant something new and it stresses me out, like it would interfere with the root development or something.
