A forest journal is a place to write down any and all observations you have about the forest, and over time, it helps change the way you perceive the world.
Apologies for the bad audio. I forgot flannel has a tendency to stick to the mic.

I'm 73 .. have called Mena, Arkansas my home since 1980 .. this are is a mixture of private lands intermingled with two national forests. I have lived in different areas here .. and am always fascinated and enjoy the wonder of it all. A while back I heard a story about how some researchers were walking with some natives of the Amazon trying to find some new plant species that would be helpful in treating disease. The researchers asked the native .. how he was able to determine what plants were good for what he needed. His answer was, "They speak to us!" It is with that understanding that I would like to suggest that we look at nature as a book .. one that we were not taught to read in public school .. but is an original living language. So for instance .. we use the alphabet symbols to convey a message .. like "TREE" .. but we don't know what that tree is .. unless we add more letters .. so we might say nut or fruit tree or pine tree or oak tree. A tree in a book is two dimensional .. but in nature we can walk all around it .. look at the bark .. notice where it grows .. learn about it's chemistry .. ( the willow tree has rooting hormones ) .. what kind of nuts or fruit grows on the tree? The tree is just one example .. but I like the idea of a journal .. as it is a way to begin to document .. the language of the "Book of Nature" (our original home). The animal groups also have their own ways of communication .. body language and sounds.

Zach. Amazed by your high level of knowledge of so many topics. I have kept a log book for going on 29 years. Mainly for the purpose of documenting active management of our forest for tax or business purposes. Recording activity but also tracking tree diameters, dates of thinning or treatments. Sometimes activities on neighbors properties. Occasionally general nature observations. Keep up the good work!

Nice one! This stuff I really good. Some ppl already have a knack for this and are highly observant. Its something like meditation, more beneficial doing this alone than with most people. I often break off from the group or let the group leave me behind if I am with people in forests. It is simply not as profitable with their distraction.

They definitely saw blue. People dont understand literary devices at all, they are desperate to believe the ancients didnt see blue so they subconsciously are misinterpreting literary devices. I studies Classics and trust me they definitely knew what blue was and saw it. They referred to it as lapis or their equivalent word for the stone. That theory is so silly. In any case is a great video and i love this journal idea. Here in colorado aspen forests are discussed at times and i was so fascinated to learn about their lifecycle and symbiotic relationship with other trees that grow here. Our misconceptions of "dying" forests and why its happening. Taking time to atop and observe can really be eye opening.

Yeah, I think calling the ocean wine dark is pretty cool actually. And of course we do have some blue colors showing up in minoan art. The argument seems to be around the word "kyanos" and what group of colors that actually referred to. But it is interesting to me how seldom the word appears in ancient texts, especially compared to other colors.

@@thetimberlandinvestor Very true its not mentioned nearly as much so i definitely think its reasonable the color was less common for them. My main thing is, word or not their eyes distinguish frequencies just as ours do so theres no way they were blind to the color. As you said it is in ancient art so there was a conscious choice to use it. But wine dark seems a perfect descriptor for the deep dark shade of the ocean. That endless depth. This seems to be the main jump where people latched on to this concept even though it doesn't really make sense. He would have said a color if that was the characteristic he was referencing, or there would be some variation of the phrase to establish that but there is none. Interesting topic for sure and in all honestly my major was studied in translation so I'm no expert on the original texts of the time.

I can confirm we (his friends) do look at him like he has schizophrenia. But also that he has taught us a lot about trees.
