I graduated from Architecture school at the University of KY in 1984 and I had an Architecture professor, (Leonardo Ricci), from Italy and he was well known in Italy. He could have taught at Harvard or Princeton or any other Ivy League school, so I asked him why he chose to teach at Kentucky. He said the students at fancy schools tend to be rich kids that have experienced everything and so they can be a bit jaded and pretentious and very difficult to teach. He liked students from modest backgrounds and more rural roots because there is an honesty and lack of pretense that allows them to learn because they don't think they already know everything. At that time the UK College of Architecture was one of the top rated schools in the country by the NCARB, the national accreditation board that reviews the curriculum and student work at each school and determines it they should be accredited to teach Architecture. There are gems to be found in most out of the way places...you just have to look for them.

Thanks for introducing me to Jon. Great stories! Bear Bryant was a significant person in college football. Jon’s inside stories were excellent and well timed for the season. Thanks, Otis!

Brennen Leigh, who was a recent guest on here, has a song "Don't You Know I'm From Here". That song has the similar sentiment and it was playing in my mind as I listened to Jon's story.

That was a really good interview Otis. I don’t know anything about this man, but I get what he’s saying. I couldn’t wait to get out of New Jersey when I got out of school! I had to go back a few times, but eventually made it to Atlanta(or close to Atlanta). And like your guest, took the best from my parents and upbringing, and left the bad stuff behind…seems to have worked out…

I got to see The Bear coach one game, 43 years ago. Jackson, MS. I was a Mississippi State fan, and damned if we didn’t win. The vision of him drilling his offensive line pregame is a vision etched in my mind.

This reminds me of the Cleveland legend Glenn shawrtz hell of guitar player and founder of the James gang. Joe Walsh took over for glen and the two remained friends till glens passing in 2018. Look up the black keys and glen at Coachella. They're is art and culture everywhere even in our little working class neighborhood ❤ thanks for this otis and I think this my favorite video yet 7:43

Nice one, Otis. I come from a place with great music and musicians too, but can't go back....tried a few times. Still my roots are there, it's just who I am...and I'm at peace with that.

Otis and John Byrd, Hello, Goodmorning, Good Day... This is really a fascinating discussion here. And, I can certainly identify with so much of what Mr. Byrd is saying, being a homegrown boy from Philadelphia, Mississippi in the '60s and '70s, and Nurturing a fervent desire, an insatiable Thirst really, to leave Mississippi for Greater Horizons out there, and I did... I like his take on the Arts, Culture, and leaving home only to eventually realize that the Home and Place you left is actually Filled with Fascinating History and Cultural Gems and Treasures... Thanks, Otis, your recent trip back to Nashville was So Very Productive, producing so many Endlessly Fascinating interviews..really Great Stuff ! Take Good Care/ Harold Lane Howell

I talked to Jon briefly after his songwriter showcase at the American Legion Post 82. I asked him for music-career advice, and he told me to stay in touch with the friends I would make at the entry level of this business -- if one or several became successful, they might make opportunities for the others.
