Thanks John. All in all I'm happy with the Zoleo. I just returned from a backpacking trip to Isle Royale and used it a lot to communicate as their was extremely limited mobile coverage.

Of course you need cell service in country. Any satellite communicator that also uses cell service needs a cell plan. For best results don’t let your phone decide witch way it sends. You decide. When you have good cell service use it. When you don’t put your phone in airplane mode and just use satellite service. If not you’re phone says to your Zoleo. (IVE GOT THIS) even though you only have half a bar and your phone only thinks it can send the message but can’t. That’s when things get fked up. I’ve had a Zoleo for 4 years now and don’t leave home without it.

Thanks for commenting! Yes, looking back now I feel that it's pretty obvious. I had assumed that the Zoleo device was connecting with cell phone towers and since nothing in the instruction booklet led me to believe otherwise, I moved forward with that assumption. Dane

Yes, absolutely. If you purchased the unlimited plan you could message as much as you wanted wherever you wanted without incurring additional costs.

Well, duh! Anybody who understands cell phones would understand that you cant use your phone without a plan. Id consider that common sense.

Dan, thank you for a great informational video. Here is my question. I am moving to Lisbon Portugal and I am looking to send and receive conformation SMS messages from my bank and other financial services. Lisbon has great service but all the phone carriers international services drop you if your phone does not ping a cell tower in the U.S. in 90 days. This is obviously a problem for someone planning to be out of the U.S. for 6 months or more. First can you keep your current phone number and Email with Zoleo or must you use one of their numbers. I could just provide my financial instructions with a new number. I would not mind paying the satellite charge if it's only for my SMS verification needs. What do you think?

Hi Kendall! I do not believe that there is anyway to keep your phone number with Zoleo Comm. Once you register the communicator, you will get a new phone number and email address with their domain. You can use the Zoleo communicator in Portugal. Your phone would not necessarily have to have a plan with the local cellular service, but you will only use satellite to communicate through the communicator. Would a VPN service help you in anyway to keep your phone pinging in the US? Dame
