Yes yes yes. I am so glad people still talk about this great game, I hate that your kinda right about the story (im bias sorry) its like where you summarize each game in the series in 2 sentences and thats what youll hear in kichikuou. a teaser if you may. But in this game it also fleshes out some background knowledge of the world like the 5 heroes, the demon civil war, the elements, and the secret arc Also I do love that you talk about the complexity of this game because one will need multiple playthroughs to experience everything this game has to offer. Looking forward to your next rance videos i promise the story and character building just gets better and better

I did Adze i played it and got the bandit king ending I didn't get the sick intro but I beat the game thank you for the rance reviews it helped revitalized my love for the rance series!

Nice to see the KR video finally come out. I actually only played a little bit of KR, back when it first got translated, because I didn't want to spoil myself on story things that would be properly covered in future Rance games. Now that I've finished all of the canon games, I really have been feeling the itch to go back and properly play KR and see how much the story was changed.

This is a very thorough review of the game and I appreciate your detailed commentary on how the character of Rance, in this game, compares to his personality in later games. I like how you gave Ragnarokarc Super Gandhi his own section of commentary, as he is certainly a fascinating character. When you call him "very likable", however, I have to wonder: did you never recruit his daughter, Magic? I didn't hear you mention her at any point, and recruiting her involves a scene in which her father does something so morally reprehensible that I think it exceeds even the worst things that Rance does (except maybe in that one ending with Satella). He does this with "good" intentions, which in my opinion only makes it even more disgusting, although perhaps that salvages a bit of his likability. After having become used to this series showcasing both the best and worst of humanity, and no longer being shocked by the depravity depicted in some of its scenes, my jaw still dropped when I reached this particular scene. Incidentally, Ragnarokarc Super Gandhi's real world namesake also has a dark side about which most people never learn, but which would cause a person to lose much, if not all, of their respect for him. I'm pretty sure that one of the writers at AliceSoft came up with this character after losing their respect for his namesake.

Awesome video as usual! While I personally have no intention on trying for Rance for myself (the series looks good- the gameplay and characterization of Rance himself just doesn't seem like my cup of tea), I love hearing your in-depth thoughts on what was oriignally going to be the end of the Rance series. Even with the rushed story/character arcs, it's impressive what they were able to make as a swan song to the series.

As someone who originally stopped after Rance 02, your video on 3 actually got me to play the rest of this series. I streamed the whole thing to some friends (usually skipping h content) and we had an absolute blast. We did, however, end up completely bouncing off of and skipping Kichikuou rance after a couple hours because the tone was much more dour from the get go. After coming back to it I do agree its a pretty great and ambitious game, but I still have trouble coming to grips with the tone and the strange fire emblem esque bombardment with new names and faces. Sengoku may have nailed the tone and gameplay a bit better in my book, but Kichikuou took a ton more risks with both and feels extremely unique because of that. That being said, Rance 6 was by FAR our favorite game on the writing front, and I'm pretty stoked to hear what you think about it. Leaving a prayer that the X translation is finished some day.

I think you are correct about your writing criticisms and even correct about why that is. Permadeath makes divorcing character from story something that has to be done, you can't have a main story that depends on so many characters that can die. I think that is a problem you can take with many similar games as well, like the Fire Emblem games (which is why I think newer games can turn off permadeath). Though I disagree about the quality being lower than other games, despite the massive disadvantage of permadeath Alicesoft still connected numerous characters to sub-plots that play a role in building your army which is an instance I think of merging gameplay and story. As a Sengoku Rance fan I think you should understand what I'm saying, as Sengoku Rance is probably the pinnacle of that design choice. On top of this as you mentioned the character endings also encourage you to become immersed in the characters, the amount of variance in the stories of some characters that are neither a "good" nor "bad" endings for them is insane. Yes the game does have a poorly paced story due to how much it is trying to cram in, but I again see this as another trade-off not a complete downside. We lose pacing and detail, but gain a story of an entire world, its struggle, and its king.

Alicesoft need to remake this. I'm sure they also know that people would surely buy it if they do. The problem is, the task seems too overwhelming huge for them. The game could become even bigger/longer than Rance X with the remake.

You are going to be happy but if you download the mod darkness hero rance for sengoku rance you kind of have a Kichikuou similar map and a lot of characters so try it out and have fun !

Around 25 minutes you mention Sill might be the only woman Rance truly loves, which is a complete misunderstanding of Rance’s character. Rance 110% loves every woman in his harem, willing to kill and fight for all of them. They’re all HIS women, and always have and always will be. This becomes much more clear around Rance 6+, but it has always been the case.

i definitely agree that the rushed writing of kichikuou is it’s biggest weakness. however, it’s actually one of my favorite games from the series purely because i’ve played all the translated games and was familiar with most of the cast. i actually played this game twice, once while playing the games in chronological order, and again after finishing IX. the first time i played the game i actually only finished one of the endings (conquering the map) because i felt i played my fair share of kichikuou. however after finishing IX i felt the urge to play the game again because i really enjoyed the gameplay of this game and was interested in seeing all of the endings to it. upon replay i found myself appreciating the writing (given the circumstances of alicesoft) way more than i originally had. it was just interesting seeing the stories of kichikuou and how the rest of the canon series plays out. also can’t wait to hear your thoughts on VI! Even after playing all of the translated games, VI is still easily my favorite story wise. I’m also interested to hear your thoughts on 5D. although it may not be the strongest game in the series, story, AND gameplay wise, there are still some memorable moments from the game.

The general way to play this game sounds a lot like Sengoku Rance. The ng+ "store" based on your previous game clear really complicated shit for me. It pushed me to play the game in a way I didn't like and follow a guide, and the guide made me save scum for certain rare events to occur on precise turns. Sometimes I would load saves hundreds of times only to find out the save I was working on wasn't coded to have that event happen that turn. Meaning I would have to do some other convoluted shit to get the event to occur. Not fun.

I feel like you need a certain type of personality to make gameplay streams or LPs even remotely decent and I just don't have it. My personality is pretty low-energy and I'm naturally pretty quiet. That's just not conducive to a good stream/LP. I'm just simply WAY better at writing and reading from a script than I am at being interesting off the cuff. Better to spend my time working on another video instead.

Yes, two of them, although there is no hentai based on Kichikou Rance (which I want so badly) there are hentai for the series in general. Rance sabaku No Guardian (Which focuses more on humor than action and sex scenes, It's pretty funny, I recommend it) and the Rance 01 OVA... Which is.... not very good, in my eyes at least (Rance's shark teeth turns into normal teeth from time to time and I don't like it. Then there is the moment where Rance and Sill reach Lia Parapara Leazas... Their faces are so ugly, and Lia's leg kicking animation also looks really bad).
