PP is very emotional. 64 years old here, and I discovered them by pure chance a couple of months ago when the algorithm suggested that I watch the 2013 performance of GLS in Wacken ... I got HOOKED! I'm now super addicted to their music, their performances, Floor's voice, and the many reaction videos out there ... their music/compositions are divine. I'm definitely a full-fledged member of the Nightwish Army ... this band and their masterpieces are life-changing ... hope one day I'll see them live ...

Then a year ago I heard Floor sing GLS at the 2013 Wacken and was hooked, and on 1st December I went to see them in Dusseldorf with my wife, excellent concert and my wife who is not a Nightwish fan at all was blown away by the whole experience and wants to do it again but she says she is still not a fan of Nightwish 😁

This performance of "The Poet...." is legendary among Nightwish aficionados. The originals, with Marko singing the lead parts and then Anette doing them (in the studio - not live) are fine in and of themselves but Floor elevates this version to a whole new level. I honestly don't believe anyone could better portray the emotions Tuomas intended better then Floor has.

Anette sings this like a pop song. Floor's performance is both heart-breakingly beautiful and at the same time, a sledgehammer to the soul. Only Floor is able to convey the emotional message in this masterpiece and wreck your soul with it.

@@WardDorrity Annette sings most things like a pop song, that is her style (unless it's changed not familiar with her more recent stuff). In fairness that was part of the reason they chose her they wanted a different sound and I think the albums with her are still the most commercially successful. Personally I prefer Floor's version of pretty much every Nigjtwish technical prowess aside song I feel she brings more emotion and expression to it than the other singers did.

So after the entire video, there was something not many catch on to... After the heart stops beating you see Marko, Emppu, and Floor sitting in front of the drummer who is fitting because he's sitting as well. That visual was designed that way to show a moment of mourning for the "dead" poet. Also, Marko and Emppu went over to make sure Tuomas was ok. This was the last time this song would be played live as this performance was exactly how Tuomas envisioned it to be. Great analysis and as a psychologist, you touched on every point of the song quite accurately. Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed. 😊❤️🤘🤘

The gossip about Tuomas' "unrequited love" for Tarja is absolutely far-fetched and has no basis. Tarja started dating Marcelo (and later married him) many years before her dismissal and the real reasons for the split are described in the official biographical book of Nightwish and according to various participants of those events, were more related to business: The problems began when Tarja decided to completely entrust the management of affairs on her behalf to Marcelo, and he became her personal manager and a full-fledged representative in the band. He began to aggressively interfere with the work of the band's management, set radical conditions and in the end it began to look like he was "renting out" Tarja to Nightwish, blackmailing the band to fulfill his conditions or Tarja won't perform. This, as well as the obvious loss of Tarja's interest in the band (she didn't hide that she planned to record another album with Nightwish, and then leave the band for a solo career), led to her dramatic dismissal. Also, the meaning of the song doesn't refer to the breakup with Tarja itself, but more to the subsequent period of time, when tons of hatred in social networks poured out on Tuomas from the angry Tarja's fans and the music press "buried" Nightwish, refusing to believe that the band has any future without Tarja's unique voice.

EXACTLY! It's really sad how fans and media put all blame on Toumas which lead him to even deeper depression. Yeah he was heartbroken because his close friend and bandmate (Tarja) betrayed him like this but all of blaming from in the time "Nightwish fans" hurted him even more.

OMG finally another excellent reaction to this masterpiece and not just nonsense. Thank you so much Rosalie. This song means a lot to the fanbase and of course even more for those band mates still in the band. A few thoughts that came to my mind during this reaction. 1. No need to pick sides (Tarja, Floor, Tuomas, Marco or even Marcello). That doesn't change anything for the feelings Tuomas felt back in the days. Of course Tarja has her own feelings and she could express them, which she did in her letter. She was free to do it in any other way as well (interviews, songs, ...). Still this masterpiece expresses the struggle Tuomas had with that situation and it is just a very, very rare thing to witness that kind of feelings from anybody. It is done so beautiful that many other people struggling with situations like this or maybe in different situations can relate to the emotions. And that makes this piece a really valuable and educational message. 2. No first hand knowledge but I was told, that Floor offered to sing all 3 boy soprano parts during that performance. Yet Tuomas made the decision to keep the first part from a backing track as it was in the original recording. 3. check the video, when the lyrics say "3 minutes and counting". The metaphorical suicide is exactly 3 minutes later in the song. Thanks again for the effort and time you put into this reaction GreeZ
@TimoArula
@TimoArula Жыл бұрын
This songs backstory is deep and dark, especially for Tuomas (suicide by song). And yet, Floor took this song to a new astral level (originally sung by Anette). Also, I recommend reading "The Pit and The Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe for extra flavor. The reason for Tuomas’ depression was not the firing of Tarja itself, it was what came after that. The fans idolized Tarja and they could not accept the fact that she got fired (Yes, she got fired). In their heads Tarja was the one that made the band famous, and they became really angry and hostile, especially towards Tuomas. They really took it out on him. They called him all kinds of ugly things and a lot of them expressed that they did not care if he would die. Even the prime minister of Finland got in on the act. It was headline news. These are the things that brought him into depression, and these are the things that echo through the lyrics... I have a Ton of facts about this, but my utmost respect for Tuomas, Tarja and Nightwish, I will not put these things in here!!!!!!!! This song has the most emotional impact, at least for me... I was that that "Bastard" who abandoned Nightwish after Tarja left...Never Again !!!! Although I love this song (Especially this version), it is the only song, I can't put to my playlist... because, I break down to tears every single time (Current reaction included...). This masterpiece will remain a reminder to me for my narrow mindlessness. Tuomas IS NIGHTWISH 🤘😎🤘. NWSU.

Timo, what a beautiful comment. I have had that realization about myself in my long life, and it's certainly not easy to come to that conclusion, let alone admit it. As a writer, I understand Tuomas and his mechanism for pain. I describe my poetry as the release of my venoms. Anybody reading most of it would think I was a depressed person, and I'm anything but ... for I release it all in my words. I've never been a fan of Tarja, in fact I stopped listening in the early days because I do not like or appreciate opera, and that was her lane. I lost so much time listening to Nightwish because of that, and found them again about four years ago. They are now my all-time favorite band, and Tuomas is, in my opinion, the greatest composer of my lifetime. We are in the same boat, we might be for different reasons, but we both lost time loving and appreciating this incredible collection of musical geniuses. But we now stand together, and I appreciate that fact. Thank you, my friend, for your moving words.

Soon after Emppu tells the others that everything is ok. At the end of the song Marko and Emppu are close to Tuomas to comfort him and Floor, after the song, before thanking the audience, turns to see if Tuomas is okay. This song is not often performed live, when it is often Tuomas has the vocals taken out of his In Ears, yet you can see he is singing every word, it is so deeply meaningful to him, it marked a difficult time in his life, some of the lines are actually from a conversation he had with his Mother after the parting of ways with Tarja, it affected him strongly as they had been friends for such a long time. Floor really does a fantastic job of showing just how powerful and emotional the lyrics are. A few times you will see either Emppu or Marco checking on Tuomas, and the three of them finish the song almost huddled together, Floor also looks to Tuomas before quietly whispering Thank You at the end. It is so powerful and full of meanings, it always touches me and brings a tear, perfection!!

This song was originally written before Anette joined the band and it is sung by Anette in the album version. There had been greater use of the choral and boy soprano elements in the album version, but Floor took on the boy soprano role in "Sparkle my scenery" where she sang in a very light, almost fragile head voice. The choral elements are also more restrained and background to Floor. When the boy soprano says "three minutes and counting" exactly three minutes later, Tuomas slices his throat. I may have missed it in your reaction, but were you aware that this song draws from Edgar Allen Poe's short story "The Pit and the Pendulum". It's a story about psychological and physical torture where a descending, bladed pendulum threatens to slice up the protagonist who has been tied to an "altar".
@grabtharshammer
@grabtharshammer Жыл бұрын
The words are "I cannot cry ?cause the shoulder cries more" meaning he can not cry on someone elses shoulder, because they (the band, the fans) are already crying more. Which is why he felt so alone. Really not sure that you understood this song fully, but that is fine because you are coming to this with your own beliefs, and this is your take on it from that viewpoint. Quite natural to try to place the lyrics into a setting you can feel comfortable with. Have you ever read The Pit & the Pendulum by Edgar A Poe? The story plays into the lyrics of this song greatly, and the knowledge of that enhances the understanding of the lyrics.

For example the first phrase of the song (boy soprano) is 'The end' and the last phrase is 'the begging'. 'Now I only have 3 minutes' and there are exactly 3 minutes before the blade gets Tuomas. About the 'shoulder cries more'. The shoulder is the rest of the band that cries too and can't really comfort him. So many emotions... Your analysis was amazing! The fact is, that Nightwish is Tuomas'es creation and he composes, arranges and create the Lyrics - the other great musicians or vocalist are there to perfect and perform the songs, but Nightwish'es heart is Tuomas! So if Tuomas wants to hire or include any vocalist to perform his art, then he will do it no matter what the fans or so called experts think about it. Tarja and Anette were there for a time being and songs were created then for them to perform, but NOW Tuomas wants to work and perform with Floor and has said that Floor is the OPTIMUM and Best fitting singer for his creations and Nightwish - so you weepers who want something else or older singers back, nobody cares about your wining and Tuomas will decide by himself who will be the vocalist performing his creations, sorry, but the world does not work like the individuals behind the keyboard want to - fed up with the wining, all 3 vocalist are exceptional in their own styles that cannot be compared directly by layman ears and knowledge. Peace!

Floor is the current lead and a fantastic singer and that is enough for me. I appreciate that a lot of people have strong feeling towards one or another of the singers but you are doing exactly what you accuse others of doing, ye olde pot and kettle situation. This was my introduction to Nightwish….the first song of theirs I ever heard & it just blew me away! From then on, I searched high & low for every song, every interview, anything I could find of theirs & have been a huge fan ever since! I’ve listened to this song so many times I’ve lost count & i never get tired of hearing it, I still cry during certain parts of it. Tuomas is a master, definitely a metal Mozart as he’s been described as by so many. I love all kinds of music but Nightwish is definitely my #1. Oh, when you see Emppu up seemingly just chatting away with Tuomas, he actually was checking on him asking if he was ok. 😊💜💚

Very nice Rosalie, well done. For me, this is yet another tearjerker by Nightwish and Floor Jansen. Floor is otherworldly in how she can elicit such emotion from me. She could sing anything and have me crying like a baby. I can't help but think how magical it must be for Freja to have her mom singing lullabies to her...sigh.

The White Lands of Empathica reference comes from the Stephen King book series "The Dark Tower". The reference for the "Shoulder Cries More" refers to the fact that he cannot go to his bandmates because they are also dealing with the pain of the attacks on the band. The two faces reference is the Tuomas that the public sees versus what he feels and prays to God. Three minutes reference is exactly how long the section "Dark Passion Play" lasts. Finally the last section to me is a Mother's lament over the death of her child. The Child singing is indeed a young boy who is a member of the London Youth Choir. Floor offered to sing this portion, but Toumas preferred to keep the original.

What a superb, detailed and thoughtful reaction. Bravo This song breaks me every time - I have no details in common at all, of course, but have been and am often in the darkest places. I understand the internal conflict, the different voices arguing within you, how you get caught in a maelstrom of fear and anger and betrayal and confusion. It is a frightening place to be and I can't express it clearly enough - Tuomas can and did. I would honestly find this song very alarming except for the soothing climax as Floor and Marko singing as Mother and Father brings everyone back to safety. I usually lose it at the cry of "Save Me", but sometimes it is the music right before Marko starts to scream - there is such a sense of crisis right before that point. Harrowing stuff. I think it is hard to say I "like" this track, but it is a stunning piece of art I admire deeply, applaud its immaculate performance, and relate to it far more than I wish I ever did.

The demo version was recorded between Tarja and Anette eras, with no female vocalist in the band, so Marko sang the whole thing. Some of the lyrics were changed. In the demo version, (would have been very harsh words for a choir boy to read, but he was not in the demo, Marko did the reading): Would you like to rape my rotting carcass? Dissect my heart? Desecrate my rest? It would make you come, wouldn't it? In the final studio version it was replaced with, (still harsh, but not quite as harsh): I'm afraid, so afraid Of being raped again, and again, and again I know I will die alone But loved. Also in the demo version: "In the year of our Lord 2007, Tuomas was called from the cares of the world." In the final version: 2005. In 2005 Tarja was fired, 2007 the album Dark Passion Play was released.

So I was at this Gig on the front row. I queued for nearly 10 hours, I didn't think I'd get to witness this song live. This song breaks you and heals you, lyrically, and musically. It is his Opus. Floor makes it so much more than what it was and it was a perfect song ( if there ever is a perfect song.) I will never forget this live. Especially from the lyrics Beneath the blue, beneath the pain, beneath the rain. Sang by Floor over a choir boy. Everything is so fitting and everything has a purpose every key change. You've already picked up on stuff. At the 3 minutes and counting it takes 3 minutes for the death....into the last part. The last part is basically the aftermath And the cycle starts again.....with the beginning but with renewed hope. There is so much to talk about. Especially when you add Edgar Allen poe story the pit and the pendulum into it. Also this is my mum's favourite nightwish song at the age of 60. And she's seen them live too.

One of Tuomas' greatest compositions but one I think many misunderstand. I feel that this is not about Tarja, but about the reaction of the fan base, the media, and even the Finnish government to the decision to fire her. Certainly all the band members excel in this performance, but I especially love the drum work Kai is doing. His double kicks are so consistent, and his tom work is fantastic. Great reaction, and keep rocking.

Your feelings are right here. That entire incident was split across three songs: Bye Bye Beautiful, which is his goodbye letter to Tarja, The Poet and the Pendulum, which is his response to the fans who had turned on him and blamed him for Tarja’s dismissal, and Master Passion Greed, which is his letter to Marcelo Cebuli, Tarja’s manager and husband, whom the band blamed for Tarja’s change in attitude and demeanor. That is why those three pieces need to be listened to together, to fully understand what they were going through at the time.

@@athlonen I agree, they are a boxed set. I have always thought it a shame they never performed "Master Passion Greed" live. It is one of the most viciously cathartic songs ever written (as well as having the most awesomely angry outros ever performed by an orchestra).

Nightwish Army, western NC Battalion reporting in here. Rosalie, what a reaction!!!! Oh how you did your homework, and does it ever show. This was SUCH a treat to watch - your perceptions and comments were, in a word, exceptional! An utter masterpiece like this deserves nothing less. 👏👏👏👏👏🤘 (EDIT) I'd like to suggest that you now watch The Greatest Show on Earth - another epic masterpiece. As dark and somber as this piece is, TGSOE will take you in the other direction. You'll be left feeling utter joy and gratitude for your existence itself, as in "Holy crap, I GET TO BE HERE!!!" As with The Poet And The Pendulum, The Greatest Show On Earth deserves a little homework. To get you started, the name of the song is part of the title of one of Prof. Richard Dawkins' (evolutionary biologist) books. The album it is from is "Endless Forms Most Beautiful", part of a quote from Charles Darwin's "On The Origin of Species". Intrigued?????? IMO there are two definitive live performances of TGSOE. One is from Tampere, Finland and the other from Wembley Arena. I have no preference. Each has its strong points; though the Wembley one actually features Prof. Dawkins onstage orating the Darwin quote.

38:05 It's "the shoulder cries more," not "the shoulder cries no more". I think it means that he doesn't have a shoulder to cry on because others are crying too. Perhaps also meaning that Tarja used to be his shoulder to cry on but now she cried more (as someone else mentioned in another comment).

But I notice a lot of people are doing them all wrong, to me. They embrace Floor as she should be, she is what is best for Nightwish because she is so versatile. What frustrates me, is the amount of people throwing in requests for Floor. So many people in the "Nightwish Army", or whatever, ignore Anette and Tarja, and all the work they put into the studio albums. Not everyone, but enough... too many to be comfortable with. If I was to say anything to people, to the people doing reactions, it is to be original. You don't have to listen to everyone and be the performing... whatever... in the circus. You don't have to be. There is over 100 songs in Nightwish's library, and so much studio work that goes unnoticed that it's almost infuriating. Now don't get me wrong, I love Floor, but Nightwish is to be experienced for everything that it is. Tarja, Anette, Floor, Live, Studio... it's all their history, Tuomas's work, Marko's work - everyone in that band. Do more of the studio work while you do the live Floor stuff. Appreciate Nightwish for everything that it is, and don't be afraid of backlash from the other fans. I always understood "I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more" to mean he felt like he couldn't show how upset he was because the person he was confiding in was also having a hard time. I relate to it on such a personal level, since I've had relationships where I would need emotional support but the other person was too in their own problems to give it to me, even when I did my best to help them.
