Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing. 🗡Join the Online Iaido Training with Seki Sensei🗡 Sign Up Here (One Lesson FREE): www.patreon.com/sekisenseiiaidotraining Interested in taking Iaido lessons directly from the 8th Dan Iaido Master with 40 years of experience in Musō Shinden Ryu, Seki sensei? I dunno if Shogo or Seki Sensei is aware of this but there's been a lotta talk in the sword community about katana's vs rapier or katana + wakizashi vs rapier and parrying dagger and I think it'd be pretty interesting to see if Seki Sensei has anything to say about this
@TheCrusader1099 Жыл бұрын
some european Rapier manuals also got kneeling in it...getting your body below the line of the enemy...

In fencing there are some huge benefits to dropping low as well. You’re not allowed to kneel, at least in epee, but squatting is an extremely useful technique.

When doing a particularly deep thrust I've actually put my off hand down on the ground for support when ducking under someone else's thrust. Being a lefty, I have to usually go under to counter a righty's matching thrust, or at best we hit each other's basket hilt. (I almost lost a finger from that, thank you safety gloves!😅)

8:01 Yes this is wise. The oppnnent thinks you mean to attack from above, but the entite goal was to attack ftom below. This might be a good finishing move if you're not tired, but he is tired.

Wondering if you can do a breakdown of the 400 year history of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu. Would love to learn more about the history/lineage, too, and see how it relates to other forms. I realize this would be a huge task, but very interesting. Thank you and Happy Holidays from the States.

IT'S OVER SEKI-SENSEI! I HAVE THE HIGH GROUND! Seki-Sensei: You underestimate the Orishiku!

From my limited expertise in this type of things, I assume is less kneeling is some secret op style which is stronger than others, but rather a deployment of the principle of controlling distance. Kneeling may be an unexpected move as it puts you in a disadvantageous position, but using it correctly puts you in a position where you have more control when the opponent doesn't know how to respond. Like dark souls rolling where it isn't actually a good strategy, but when used in the right scenarios it is a genius move.

As in other contact martial arts, movemets like these are done with the intention of changing the angle of attack. Since the idea in swordsmanship of any kind is that any hit will likely disable the opponent from the ability to continue fighting, these surprise attacks might work, but the other side of the coin is that if the opponent is capable of foreseeing and countering, the faliure of such an attack would mean a disaster for the kneeling swordsman.

I was wondering if there is any fighting style/stance for holding the sword in one hand and another object in the other hand? For example you have to hold a lantern at night while fighting, any specific technique/stance for that situation?
@HeyyyJude Жыл бұрын
yeah, drop the lantern and focus on living to see another day

While it is rare, there are some koryu that make use of asymmetrical dual wielding. The most extreme example I have seen is that in some Tendou Ryuu techniques, there are kata where you start the fight with a naginata and a kodachi in your obi, and in the course of the technique you draw the kodachi and wield both weapons at the same time. I believe I've seen it demonstrated in enbu and posted to youtube.

Interesting. The only time before this I've seen kneeling in swordfighting is to attack the legs.

Question: while the attack is coming down if you kneel and cut the wrist would the sword keep traveling?
@KickyFut Жыл бұрын
You would be cutting the veins/tendons of the wrist, not the bones, so the sword would swing down and fall short of reaching you. Hence the benefit of kneeling.

If I had a dojo, I’d make a rule that said: “In training and practicing techniques, you aren’t allowed to swing any different or with less power than it takes to successfully cut a tatami mat.”
@letsasksekisensei Жыл бұрын
In our style though, that would not be a good rule… We explain more why in this video! kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4HTlZqPf56YpNUsi=tux546lkz_cKYMd5

I am dedicating myself deeply to studying the sword, I intend to learn how to use and produce them and over the years create a katana worthy of presenting Seki Sensei with one of my creations, I don't know how long it will take, but sensei I ask you to wait for me Until then, it would be a great honor to have my sword wielded by you.
