I have had both of these kits. I built the IMC kit in the 60s as the drag race version. I had kept it in the box to keep it from getting dusty and my baby sister sat on the box smashing the model. It took me forty years to find another unbuit kit. This one turned out MUCH better than the first! So far, no one has sat on it😅!

Cool👍. I had the IMC kit when I was a teenager. I built the front engine version. I got yelled at for painting with a rattle can in my bedroom. It took a long time to dry. Some things never change 😂. Fun video Matt.👏👏👏

I vaguely remember building the IMC VW kit waaaay back in the '60s! A friend of mine had '62 VW with a sunroof. We had a blast with that car!

I love a VW kit. I've just finished an Airfix 1:32 1964 Volkswagen Beetle and I built the Revell 1:24 '68 Beetle last year. I've got the Tamiya and Gunze Sangyo 1966 and 1955 VWs to build.

Nice update, Matt!!! I remember both kits. The Pyro is a 1/20th scale. I dont think it came with glass. The IMC is fidelity. Takes patience to build. Thanks for sharing.

Really enjoyed the video Matthew! Sorry, but that Pyro looks to be a nightmare to build, lol. I like the scale of it, probably about 1:20, but building the body with all those separate parts and making sure they all fit together correctly will be like building the real car. 👍👍

Nice comparison, I've been telling myself to get a convertible vw to make a rep of a movie car. Leon is a great lowrider builder he definitely has a passion for it. Those wheels does look good he put them on the car he just done. Those GSX wheels are cool they will look good on the Grand National.

These older model kits were certainly challenging. The smaller one looks like it'd be a bit easier to build, because those multi piece bodies can be a pain.

I’m not an expert Matthew, but that kit appears to have a fabric sunroof and I believe 1963 was the last year for that. I think you’re right on the scale. It appears to be 1/20 like the popcorn wagon is. Good comparison and at least you won’t mix up the parts as they’re two different colors!

'63 was the last year for the Wolfsburg crest on the front lid. No gas gauge on the kit dash (and that steering wheel) means '58 to '60.

When Mattel created their first 16 Hot Wheels cars in 1967, they used build up plastic kits for some of them . The VW is a scaled down IMC model. And I think that Revells Herbie kit is another version of their old 1/25 VW and not a reissue of the IMC kit. Greetings from Germany! Ralf

i have no experience with the Pyro VW (which is probably 1/20th scale, as you and several others have said). I built the IMC VW when I was 15 years old and it went together fine, from what I can remember (that was back in 1976!). IMC kits had a reputation for being very detailed, but I think their reputation should be "complicated and fiddly." They aren't anything special detail-wise -- just look at those thick and undetailed vent window posts -- but they sure do have a lot of parts.

Just in case anyone wants to check, the wheelbase on a 1958 in 94.5" with an overall length of 160.2". I will leave.it to others to do the division of scaling that down.

Cool bugs... I'm not a import guy but I would build a bug gasser with your seats, "rims" I call em that, a blown small block and whatever else could be used... This got me thinking.... Weasel

Hello Matt how you been the p y r o Volkswagen is 1/20 scale while the IMC Volkswagen is more 125 scale yes the p y r o is different in its scale it is very nicely done if you have an MPC Corvette or AMX sitting around you can definitely adopt the wheels and tires on that little black bug
