You Night Story Crafting Project: Alexis Manshack

When women begin their post-cancer storytelling journey, we remind them that cancer is not their only story. As founder Lisa McKenzie says, “Although cancer has happened to you, it's not who you are.”
At the You Night Story Crafting Program, women are guided on how to reflect on their life, craft their story and share it with the world so it can uplift someone who needs encouragement.
In this video, we learn about Alexis Manshack. Here is an excerpt of her story:
“The African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child” describes the experience that molded me into the woman I am today. My village is full of love warriors, especially the matriarchs in my life. Although, my father and grandfather planted the seeds of how men were to treat and respect women and my mother’s survival instinct was passed into my DNA - my grandmother, Anna and my aunt, Adrienne were huge influences in my life. When I was about 12 years old, I walked home after visiting a friend. During my walk, a man drove in the neighborhood in a red convertible and was rather inappropriate. I shared some choice words with him as I continued to walk home. After sharing with my grandmother about his indecency, she dropped everything, told me to get in the car and we drove in the neighborhood looking for him. Hmm, it was to his advantage that she was unable to find him. This tenacity was one of many seeds planted in my upbringing.”
