This would’ve been a good opportunity for a dark skin black woman to play a lead character in a movie about interracial relationship. Was it really an interracial romance if Lauren is biracial? I like Lauren London but it made no sense to have two darker brown parents and then cast a mixed race daughter.

I was so disappointed. Absolutely ZERO chemistry and an all-time not-believable couple …Julia-Louis Dreyfus and David Duchovny acted like they had head injuries. Nia Long and Eddie Murphy were totally humorless and unrealistic. The comedy was corny and the story was ridiculous, especially with the surprise wedding at the end. Kenya Barris is so heavy handed, melodramatic, and broad. I just don’t get him. This premise had a ton of potential.

Jonah Hill looks older than Julia Louis Dreyfus in this movie. It was very distracting thus his parents felt like his siblings to me. Lauren London did the film ATL in 2006 and this film with her acting and style feels like her ATL character never grew up. Beautiful young woman but the acting was something to be desired. This film was giving Tyler Perry first movie film budget. The writing was lazy and unimpressive. Lauren didn’t even have chemistry with the people that portrayed her friends and family. The N word lost its ability at any humor because it was used so much within the first 20 minutes, it felt offensive. Eddie Murphy had on all the makeup Sephora offered to the makeup artist. I agree with you both this felt like a tv series. The montage of their relationship did not do justice to how these two people had chemistry with or without the added factor of race. You all were spot on with the fact that it was odd that Jonah and Lauren would seem oblivious to their parents reaction. The better story would be two people who met in college and hooked up on a dare.

This movie pissed me off! It was so ridiculous and not in a funny way. Aren’t we past this nonsense?!! Jonah hill came off to me so frumpy and unkempt. The couple has absolutely no chemistry. Even him and his best friend had no chemistry. Why did Lauren come out of hiatus for this?! I’m black and I’ve never had such awkward interactions with Jewish people. The worst part of the movie was when one of the brides friends said “who’s this white woman?” Like Wtf?!! How rude!!! Who’d really do that to someone’s face? You know what maybe I’m wrong, maybe America has become this place where we cannot interact normally with each other without this unreasonable awkwardness and bigotry. In 2023 I'm annoyed that the role of Eddie & Nia's daughter was not given to an unambiguous Black woman. If we are to believe neither of them are a step parent then how would they have a daughter with that phenotype? The character played by Lauren London would be embraced and adored in ways that a dark skinned, kinky haired, fuller facial featured Black woman would not! Also Lauren and Jonah's characters were totally unbelievable as a romantic couple. Zero chemistry. Thanks for the review guys because I concur.

The blacks in this movie were woke, notice that Ezrah's podcast partner basically said that whites and blacks can never get along, even though she and Ezrah get along. This movie was absolutely miserable. I was really looking forward to this movie, thinking had had to be hilarious... wrong. Now I am a black woman, and laughed at the ring and wig part, after a big cringe, though it was the only part. Now, I can see were the mother was offensive. But I saw it as she was being unintentionally offensive for a good reason. That she was trying to get to know her Black daughter in-law, understand her... in just th3 wrong ways. But the black people were just A-holes for no reason other than he was Whyte. I also hated how suddenly she was pro-black and starting a fight with her fiancé because of her father, when that wasn't her normal temperament. Yeah, throw 3/4s of the script away.

I think the movie was a bit heavy handed in some parts. I’m a black woman and I could see that Ezra’s mom was trying, she didn’t deserve all the backlash she got from Amira’s family. When her ring got stuck in the woman’s weave, it genuinely wasn’t her fault 😂😂😂😂. Ezra’s family ( cast members) seemed more relaxed in their roles.

The fifth time Julia Louis-Dreyfus's character went on an improv-style awkward ramble I literally said out loud, "Oh my god, movie, please stop!" There were so many moments that this film could have elevated itself, and it refused every opportunity. And thank you for mentioning the ending. The whole message of the movie (I think) that the younger generation has its own path to forge unburdened by the baggage of the previous generation is completely abandoned by the notion that, yeah, the parents are now OK with the marriage, but they still dictate the terms of when and how that wedding takes place.

A movie about race that depends on sitcom humor, and tired stereotypes is almost inexcusable in 2023. There is still too much left to be said about race and equality in America. The studio could have covered some new territory, and furthered the conversation about racial expectations, misunderstandings, and prejudice in different situations than just interracial dating. IT'S BEEN DONE! For example, my family's story would have been interesting to explore. We first had four white kids the "regular" way. Then we adopted a 12 year old Hispanic son, and, finally a 10 year old black daughter. (Add to that plot, one of my bio kids came-out to us during middle school!) So, I know there are great stories out there about race that would make much better movies, and, could possibly help people recognize their own racial blind spots. Too bad this movie just went for cheap laughs rather than going a little deeper and actually accomplishing something. This movie will be easy to forget.

I know two different people who are in interracial relationships and they tell me their families get along great. This movie represents like the worst case scenario and not the norm. This isn't how the vast majority of people act toward each other in this day and age. Just really disliked the movie

Kenya is like Tyler Perry they make the same movies over and over and over. Different people same storyline. People just going to watch it because of the popular cast. I got to the point now where I can tell a Jordan peel movie, a Tyler Perry movie and a Kenya movie because none of them never step outside the box with their movies

Yes! This is it! Kenya Barris can be so cringe. He does that with all his shows. It’s like he lives on another planet where white people are always the enemy. He takes every racial stereotype and amps it up to infinity. It’s disgusting and a total turnoff. He tends to ruin his his shows which are otherwise great concepts.

I feel the same way. Mr. Barris needs to broaden his creative horizon. There are so many stories to be told that aren't race based.

Well pointed. It is dated. Many things need resolution - much work remains undone - but then suggesting some "edgy-ness" to the subject is a shrug-worthy. There is that BBC show "MI-5" from early 2000s with David Oyelowo playing one of the agent. What always surprised me how there is zero "look Ma - he Black" factor in that show. It is really as color blind as it gets. They give him boring British hobby of reading on cricket history ;-) Americans would not stop themselves from giving him some stereotypical blackness - a good basketball player or good dancer or snappy dresser.

Hearing you guys talk about this one, reminds me of Guess Who. Fun fact I watched Guess Who in theaters alone as a 12-year-old boy. Also did the same for Fat Albert, good times.

I couldn’t agree more with every comment you made! This is my first video of yours that I’ve seen, but it won’t be the last!

it's that akward interracial diner scene hollywood has been putting in their movies for years but now it is 2 hours long. The people who write this are more cringe than the conversations in their movie.

I just gave this movie a 3rd try and got maybe 30 minutes in this time. Jonah Hill is pandering soooo hard that you can't believe Anything about this situation. Of course interracial couples are a majority now but Lauren London and Obese Jonah Hill being spray tanned so much Lauren London & Jonah have the same skin tone. Also the CGI Kiss in the end, talk about Horrible casting and a fictional relationship. 😂

I like Joseph's idea of focusing on the Jewish family more and their struggle with the newly integrated members of the family.

The movie makes Eddy's & Nia's character seem nuts, unreasonable, and silly...yup the Culture Podcast & best friend would make a difference Jonas' character more comfortable and equipped

First, this was written by Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill. Some of the holes in the story makes sense, there needed to be more rewrites for depth. Sometimes Kenya can be out of touch with blackness and I don't know why, It showed in Black AF occasionally. Lauren was awesome, Jonah was great but there was ZERO chemistry between Lauren and Jonah. (I think Jonah had a crush on her and just made her his love interest.) After seeing her in "The Game" opposite Jay Ellis as Blue, that was chemistry; also in "This Christmas" opposite Mikhi Phifer there was real chemistry. Sooooo... I loved Julia Louis-Dreyfus she was comedy gold. Eddy was good, I wished Nia had more lines. I HATED that Jonah's character lied about everything (like his momma) and was NEVER, EVER called out, especially about the little "holocaust" ring, most women would have checked him on some of his lies. Over all, I agree it was okay. There were some funny moments.

Jonah character looks like he belongs in the movie blow with Johnnie Depp.
