Amazon seems to be a place where scammers come flocking to sell falsely advertised products. Last time we took a look at power banks and found out that they were completely lying about their advertised capacities. This time we decided to test out USBs and see if we had a similar result. Let's just say, you'll be shocked by what we found. Be safe out there...

Just for context. At 5:50 the drive displayed may be a clone of device called a rubber ducky (which the image shown for a few frame is). While not super common, they are a real threat to your computers since they can be used to open backdoors, script viruses, etc (they are basically just a digital keyboard that can type super fast). But these aren't the only issue. While that device doesn't look like a USB killer or a normal keystroke injector, there is still the very real possibility that the USB controller (what gives standard information data like storage capacity, model, etc) could have been rewritten to not only change the read size, but could also contain malicious data (like a keystroke injector but a little more limited) If anyone wants to try anything like this, get a cheap computer and physically disconnect it's modem or install a different OS on it like Debian. This seems like overkill but if it can't connect to the internet and if the virus written can't be read by the OS by default, it improves your odds at staying safe. And if you do feel like you have been infected. Run an antivirus check (doesn't matter what brand as long as you trust it. And if that doesn't suit you; try transcript or something else on GitHub) But in best practice Don't plug random USB drives you find laying around or use fishy products

Thank you for bringing more visibility to this Amazon scam. In my opinion, the worst part of the scam is that if someone uses the USB drive like normal and writes more data than the true capacity, it will start overwriting data that has already been written, causing permanent data loss. It's heartbreaking seeing reviews of these fake USB drives and SD cards where someone tried to use it to store important data, like for a wedding photo shoot, only for it to disappear, and they don't find out until it's too late.

Another risk you can encounter when plugging an unknown USB drive into your computer. USB killers are devices that look USB sticks but are actually full of capacitors, which charge from the power source on the port and then send an electric pulse through your motherboard an will most certainly destroy your computer. I have no idea why anyone would ever do something like this, but some people are willing to do anything to ruin another person day. Sauce: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maWlqoueqcqSY6M + a lot of own research, because I, as a hobby electronics engineer, find this topic really interesting.

Aww that's honestly really sweet, coming from a father. 😊 When the video started, I said to myself the Sandisk will be the only one true and legit, and reliable. You can usually rely on SanDisk, PNY, Samsung, Western Digital (not sure if they make USB drives or mem cards but they're still a storage medium company), Avant, etc. I know there's more but I can't recall them all right off. Anyways, that drive should last you a long time long as you take care of it. 😎 p.s. I actually have a 64GB Sandisk USB drive that only holds my PC copy of GTA V on it for backup, and it's been that way for roughly 5 years now and shows no signs of problems!

IT specialist here: #1.To see the actual capacity of a usb is by checking the volume of the usb via the Disk management tool which is a Windows tool. #2 usb speed is determine by the file system the usb was formatted in , so normal usb are FAT32 because of their small capacity.# 3 the third usb with an SD card, those are called BAD USB Rubber Ducky. The computer recognises them as HID "human interface device" like your keyboard. So your computer will trusts it, but it's main function is to execute commands with the intension to steal data or pictures ....etc. luckily for you nothing malicious happen because it was recognised as a mass storage.

Also IT specialist here, Many of these scam USB drives (PERSONAL Experience here) still show up in disk management. I have had dozens upon dozens of people come to my desk since COVID started asking this, and about 8/10 would still show up in disk management as 1 TB or 2 TB. I am not entirely sure I am not a programmer or anything like that, but a lot of them have fooled that area of windows as well. There was a couple that peaked my interested, someone brought in a 3 TB and a 5 TB USB, I booted it into Linux, Linux also detected it as 3 & 5 TB, but what really made me scratch my head is I had looked at it while doing a fresh Windows 10 install one day, and They ALSO Showed up when selecting the partition to install W10 on there, as 3 & 5 TB. I always laugh at the loyalty behind Amazon product buyers. Although they have some protections in place. It doesnt stop the ridiculous amounts of fake sellers with no actual product. Most will click ebay and or other site like allibaba etc. Ghost or drop ship you product from there and sell it sometimes 400% higher then what it cost them on the sites you decided to not buy from.

around 2013 SanDisk used to make these red Flashdrives, i have one still to this day. one day i dropped it and the casing split apart, and i noticed that it was also actually an sd card reader. the SD was a legid sandisk sd card tho, i guess it made sense for them to make it that way at that time. and i am100% sure it is an official san disk product.

I had a SanDisk Blade with a SD inside it back around 2014/2015. I immediately ran H2TestW and... It was the real capacity. If the vendor isn't reputable I would not even touch a branded one from that seller honestly. There are plenty of shameless counterfeits that copy reputable brands with far smaller capacity and such, worse they tend to raise the price to make those seem more legit.

The real pro tip: Only buy storage from retail stores. Seriously, if your buying a SSD or HDD or even SD cards the only way you can guarantee it’s real is if it comes from a place like Staples or Best Buy. I’ve been burned a bunch of times from Amazon even when it’s, “Sold by and shipped by Amazon.” When it’s your data don’t trust anything that has a chance of being drop shipped.

a little correction 3:23 , it's actually 640Mega'bits', notice the 'bits', we actually divide the bits by 8 to get the speeds in Mega'bytes' , which is 80Megabytes, (which is not that fast) we do this because 1 byte has 8 bits. Good video though.
