I just figured why you got all that free equipment. Ceracell found out about our little swarm competition, and saw how I was catching all the free bees and you weren't catching any.They figured it would ease your pain if at least you got something free so they sent you those gifts as a consolation. As nice as that stuff is, and it is nice, it still won't pay for my Burrito Grande that you owe me for losing the bet. Man, I'm hungry now thinking about it. God's peace brother.

Yay I have four of these. Love them. Little easier for me as Ceracell are only an hours drive away😍 I am in New Zealand. Overwintered 8 hives and 2 NUCs, one a 3/4 frame one. I use them through winter to feed dry sugar - just remove the clips. In spring put the clips back and feed syrup. Never had a bee drown. Just a fantastic system. Will be getting more throughout the season.

628DirtRooster thanks for sharing your videos! You said if the rain will go away? Have you had a lot of rain this year? If so do you have to feed the bees more ,do you see a lot less flowers blooming?I have noticed here flowers are not growing here like last year.we have gotten a lot of rain this year .i lost most of my garden and some trees.how do you do Inspections on hives to get them ready for winter ,when there is a dearth to prevent robbing ?
@Rastlyn1205746 жыл бұрын
So, the difference in the feeders is that there are corner access ports that allows the bees to eat all the syrup no matter how the hive is tilted and the holes in the frame sides allow the bees to put honey/brood in them which denies a place for the beetles to hide?
@danameable6 жыл бұрын

@AMStationEngineer6 жыл бұрын
This info doesn't quite 'jibe' with the subject of this video, but what the heck, here goes: about 25 years ago, one of my fellow engineers at Boeing brought an 'exhausted' medium (honey) super to our engineering lab, and used an video optical comparator "just to check out the dimensional tolerances of the 'girls handiwork' ". The tolerances varied between .005, and .017 thousandths, but this fact was not the most remarkable, what impressed us most greatly, was the fact that we could visually superimpose one section of comb over another, with the "4 o'clock dimension of the hexagonal" being approximately .025 smaller than the other five dimensions, within that one entire frame. If we could just teach them how to harvest titanium, 6061-T6 aluminum, brass, stainless steel, and carbon fiber, the world would have some really awesome materials with which to build.
@andystampfli91276 жыл бұрын
If only all workers were within those tolerances... we would have smooth roads, solar electric cargo ships, and those car planes every old syfi movie said we'd have by now ... If only there was some kinda engineer to build those things.
@SpiritBear126 жыл бұрын
I don't understand how the holes along the edge of the frames are supposed to help reduce hive beetles.
@julieenslow59156 жыл бұрын
SpiritBear12 I am just guessing, but those holes are beetle-sized. Give the bees a place to chase the beetles, and then they can propolis them into that hole. Don't know if that's how its intended to be used, but lets let him put it into use and see what the bees do!
@radon3606 жыл бұрын
The bees like to corner the beetles, though I'm curious to know whether the bees eventually clean them out to "reset the trap" once the beetles are dead.
@SpiritBear126 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have seen bees in videos round up and corral the beetles, but what do the bees do next with them, just have them guarded all the time, kill them some how? I don't know. I looked up Ceracell's website, but they said nothing about how the holes are used by the bees.
@thenextstepp6 жыл бұрын
SpiritBear12 yeah I've seen where they build walls out of propolis and round up the beetles into a common area. I was wondering about the holes in the frame as well
@kylew13856 жыл бұрын
I don't get it either, in fact I think it would be counter-intuitive to anyone running freeman bottom boards with an oil trap. I would love to be wrong though, because we have SHB by the spade full down here in FL.

In NZ, I haven't seen boxes with finger joints. They are all rabbets, nailed in two directions to stop them coming apart. Often we preserve the boxes by dipping for 10 minutes in hot paraffin wax. They last for years that way. I suppose the hot wax would not be good for a glue joint.
@julieenslow59155 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Bowers How would the hot wax last in very hot climates? It gets very hot in the southern part of the USA (all the way across!). I live in Florida when is south of all the other southern states. Seriously - would preserving the boxes by dipping them in hot wax work here?

Love the vids and your channel. I never thought bee keeping would be so interesting. How hard would it be to keep bee's in Maine?

There are beekeepers up there. I'm sure winter is tough but it's doable. Check out blueberry pollination in Maine.

why are the holes in the plastic Foundation good for controlling beetles? Is it because the bees trap them in there and then seal them up in the little holes?

No but good guess. I’ll have to clear that up in the next video.

That would be great!

Please do! I watched the next couple videos but you never came back to this, I'm intrigued about why those holes would help and whether that is something I could DIY into my own frames. Also - thank you for making these videos. I'm getting into beekeeping next spring and I've learned more just watching the day in day out stuff you film than I have anywhere else.

Yeah man I had to hit the road to go work these hurricanes and haven't had the time to finish up the video. I will be doing that video but here is the long and short of it. The old plastic frames have grooves on the sides of the spacer bars and the lower edges of the frames that the small hive beetles can hang out in and the bees can't reach them or effectively seal them in but with the new frames the holes in the sides are the same size as a bee cell and the bees can control the lower edges of the frames much better. The upper cells are blocked off from beetles getting in them if the frames are pushed together tight. It's less space beetles can run hide. If you have the older plastic frames you can fill the grooves but its a time consuming step that no one takes.
