I take three on every trip -- a designated map compass (Suunto - base plate only)), a sighting compass (Brunton TruArc global), and a spare (my old liquid filled boy scout compass - 50 years and still going strong). The old "one is none" adage.

Not just need compass but need familiar yourself map and where civilization is direction in case loose map.

I still got button compass .it's in my car kit though don't travel like did young got one as back up direction finder my pack.had them years.

Mine old is old military one no back mirror trusted you could look back knew how pick point line objects to stay in line.

Where do you go to get state park maps? I live in Parma, Ohio.

Stop by the Ranger's office or you can often find them on the map sign post. If you want nice quality Topo maps I go to Mytopo and order them in 1:24,000 scale.

I really appreciated getting a compass with a liquid-filled body, which made it easier to get a direction as you walk, and later, the adjustable declination, which made easier to get a proper bearing. Please use a screwdriver to adjust the declination before you hit the trail, and use the little tool when you are in the field, so the tool isn't lost or bent.

Just a FYI kinda thing...... The adjustment tool that ships with the compass is non magnetic , where as your screw driver may not be.
