To be fair, that chromium cover was pretty sweet! None of the other chromium covers that came after it could compare to how good that one looked. And to be fair, the gimmick cover craze was still red hot, and if you were selling Silver Surfer # 50 for $50 with just a foil stamped cover then one would naturally think that chrome would command a higher resale value. Not to mention that those early Valiant back issues were commanding hundreds of dollars at the time due to the low print runs, so the company was still riding on that reputation (which Wizard made sure to pump up way too big until it eventually popped). If you owned an LCS in the early '90s, you know two things. Gimmick covers have high resale value and Valiant back issues have a high resale value. I can't blame a store owner for thinking that a Valiant comic with a gimmick cover would go to the moon or that he'd want to flood his store with them to milk all the fanboys who think it's going to go to the moon. Of course, this is the same thinking that gave us Superman III. "Superman movies make a lot of money. Richard Pryor movies make a lot of money. If we put Richard Pryor in a Superman movie, it will surely make a WHOLE LOTTA MONEY!!!" It didn't work out that way in either case. ; )

At a comic show a guy offered me an insane amount of money for the box that I couldn’t refuse it. A few week later shooter was gone and the book started to tank and rapidly lose value. It’s sad because those early books and stories were actually really good. I did buy a few silver keys with that cash.

Amen on Robin II. Stores underbought the Robin I mini and it became a hit, with fans paying high value for the back issues thanks to Wizard pumping it up, so people went crazy and bought multiple copies of every single variant cover of Robin II thinking history would repeat itself. And of course DC printed so damned many of them that they still litter discount bins in every LCS in America to this very day.

Holy Polybagged. sealing comic in a bag so you can't read it, was it just a poly to get you to buy two? on to open and one to keep? never liked it.
@jimbomba43656 ай бұрын
It was definitely a ploy to make you buy more than one comic. Beyond putting different cards in each bag to entice fans to buy the set, there was a large amount confusion at the time as to whether a polybagged comic would worth more in or out of the bag in the long run. Some people argued that cutting the bag open rendered it no longer mint, while others said that the plastic was cheap and would degrade the book faster if it wasn't removed from the bag. As a result, most collectors hedged their bets and bought at least two copies; one to keep in the polybag and one to remove and read so their their bases were covered either way. As I said previous, I usually waited until the second print came out and bought that one to read, which is essentially still me buying two copies of the same comic.

This is a great list and your spot on with all your selections. The only thing I would add and I am surprised you didn't include as just a single entry would be the books that everyone thought were going to be worth a lot of money back in the 90's and that I still think are undervalued only for their historical significance. I am talking about all the Image launch titles. With the exception of Spawn #1 which you mentioned all the other ones have never amounted to anything and some of which I am actually still a fan of today. These include Youngblood #1 which was the first book to be published under the Image publishing banner and the others Cyberforce #1, Savage Dragon #1, Shadow Hawk #1, and Wild C.A.T.S. #1. I still think that these could be worth something some day if interest is spurred with collectors and although I think some of these had high print counts you never know. The one thing I have gone out and done is scoop up all the newsstand versions of these books in the highest grades I can find just in case, and have found them very cheap. And let me tell you finding a high grade version of Shadow Hawk #1 newsstand is nearly impossible with that all black cover.

He was wanting to "cash in on his investment" to pay for his kid's college. Most of the issues he had were in my free comics bin that I would give away to kids. After I told him we weren't interested in buying them at any price, he demanded that we give him a refund at the sticker price. I of course refused, and instead advised him to wait another twenty years in the hopes that maybe the market would swing back towards them being valuable again. People who want to invest should go to an investment banker, not a comic book store!

I’ve noticed 90% of all DC books have no value, the market on them is so niche that you’re stuck with them forever. Maybe a little bit of a troll here…😂

My original superman 75 is long gone. Xforce 2 was in my bathroom book holder for a long time with far side compilations.

My gosh....is there ANY COMIC from the 1990's NOT in 9.0 condition? Yeah..think about THAT? And really...how HARD is it to find one that is NOT in 9.0 or better? They are as common as dirt.

They is actually a super rare copy of 'Death of Superman '#75. I think they only made it for creators but a few are out there.

I had a comic shop in the 90's, it was hard going into the London comic marts and seeing stacks of X-Men 1 & X-Factor 1 behind every dealers table, you could probably fill the Grand Canyon. 🤦I think the most recent sting I got was grabbing a few copies of several Pretty Deadly 1 books when they first came out... still have them lol

Heres a tale that will give you a heart attack: my dad had Action Comics #1 when he was a kid back in the early 50s. I asked what happened to it. He said he threw it out because back then they didnt think comics were worth anything.

Out of curiosity.... What are the resale values on the omnibus you have behind you? Obviously I understand not going to be like rare standalone comics but just curious is all...

Omega Men #1, New Mutants #1, Alpha Flight #1. Back in the 1980s, if there was a #1 comic, every kid bought one. Coulda bought a Hulk 181 for $25 or bought about 25 copies of these books. Guess which option I chose.

Marvel Super-Heroes #12 and Avenging Spider-Man #9 both look like they would be way more expensive than they truly are. The Captain Marvel legacy has never caught on with Marvel Comics. They should just return the name to who we now call Shazam!

I love your vids James! Captain Catrot's first appearance was in a 16 page insert in The New Teen Titans #16. So would Captain Carrot & his amazing zoo crew #1 be his 2nd apperance then? If so, raw on the ebay sold listings goes for around $5-10? I believe.❤

Lots of times I'll buy collectors items such as these from my local 50 cent bin. I think some of them see me as a starry-eyed kid who expects hundreds back on the investment. Meanwhile, I just think it's cheaper than how much they charge for trades nowadays.

Fortunately for me, I saw the glossies and alt cover rush in the 90’s as what it was, overprinting hype. I avoided many titles, focusing on artists and writers rather than titles. That has paid off decently… or it would, if I ever sell!

I was tricked into buying this storyline and lost hundreds on it. Stopped loving comics over that too.

It breaks my heart to go into comic shops now and see the comics that I paid $20-$50 for back in the mid 90s, now selling for about $5.00. My biggest rip off was the men in black comics. A magazine said there’s only about 12 copies of these in the world, so a local comic shop was selling issue one for $80, issue two and three for $30. I bought all three of them, and now I think they’re basically worthless.

Some of these might be worth something, but not in our lifetime. Not every "collectors item" is a goldmine .

Comics are only worth the story they're telling.

I have the entire run of Captain America 100-454. I collected them because I wanted to not because I thought I was going to get rich. I collect books for that reason, because I want to. Same reason I have full runs of other titles.

Price depends on rarity; that's why comics from the 40s are so pricey. When a comic's entire print run has been preserved in sleeves, it's value never goes up.

I bought a SAVAGE DRAGON #1 when I was a kid, held on to it for 30 years. It went missing last year so I got online to see if it was worth anything. Got 10 for $5 on ebay. Womp womp.
