I was finally able to convince my friends to play from the white instead of blues after I shot one my best scores because on my second shot I was able to use clubs i’m comfortable with on my approach shots instead of long irons. Also we played a few course where the carts have what tees you should play depending on your handicap and that helped convincing them to play up too. Every course should have something like that to encourage people to play the proper tees.

This summer I started playing from the "forward" tees (red in my golf course) and it made a huge difference in my enjoyment of the game. The longest club I carry is a 5 wood and playing from the forward tees gives me a chance to hit greens in regulation, which also means I get chances to make pars and even birdies. My answer to the question whether someone is playing from the wrong tee is based on this experience. I think the correct tees for all players are the tees from which they can have a somewhat comfortable second shot for a green in regulation. Most players who struggle to break 100 should move forward.

Whenever I play with my wife I always play off the forward tees with her. Irons only and 2 iron only on par 5s. It’s fun to have a different look at the course and it seems like we are really playing together since we aren’t stopping at different tees.

I'm 69 years old and all of my golfing buddies are in their 70's, so we play the senior tees. (Ha, I've lived a lot of years to earn that privilege!) I laugh at these younger guys whose ego makes them play the blue tees, yet they CONSTANTLY are getting double and even triple bogeys! It slows down the play for everyone, yet they stubbornly refuse to adjust. The way I view it is that we're not pros, so who cares if you move up to a tee box which makes your game much more enjoyable. Isn't that why we're out there?

As a short-hitting, low handicapper, this is always an interesting question for me. There's a rough calculation you can do where you multiply your average 5-iron distance by 36 and that is (roughly) what length course you should play. For me that's between 160-170 yards, which works out to 5760-6120 yards. That's about where the "regular men's" tees are. In this part of the US they're usually the white tees. My regular playing buddies are big bombers and often want to play off the longer tees, and I say "play from wherever you like - I'm playing the whites." I have zero ego where this is concerned and it's just not a lot of fun hitting 5-wood approaches all day. I'll also mix it up sometimes. For me, 400 yards is the max I can play a par 4 and have a shot at consistently hitting the green. If a course has two or three par 4's that are 400-420 yards: no problem. There should be challenges in a round. However, if it has 6 or 7 of those "long" par 4's (for me) I will move up a set of tees on a few of them. Again - it's no fun hitting 5-wood into greens all day. BUT! It really is good practice for the fairway woods and long irons (and short game) to play from tees that are longer than is comfortable. So there's that. Also, a course with hard fairways where you get a lot of roll may be at 6200-6400 yards on the card, but play MUCH shorter than that.

Most of the courses around here have “senior” tees, further back than the red tees. My playing partner and I take every advantage of this as we are both in our early 70’s and have lost some distance. Besides golf is hard enough without making holes play longer. Great video.

A few weeks ago, I watched a PGA golf tournament on TV, and a commentator said that the proper tees you should be playing from should be 27times your average driving distance. I'm 71, and my average driving distance is around 215 yards. So 27 * 215 = 5802 yards which corresponds to the grey tees. on the golf course I play There are 4 tees : Blue = 6529 yards total distance would require your average driving distance to be 241 yards , White tees = 6226 yards = 230 yards average driving distance , Grey tees = 5655 yards = 206 yards average driving distance and Red tees = 5099 yards = 185 yards average driving distance. The commentator said that you might enjoy more playing if you play within your ability /capacity. Also that it would probably reduce the time to play 18 holes as many are simply not playing the tees they should playing on.

Great content, James. I enjoy watching KZbin personalities revisit this question on-course. Well done. I'd watch a match off the forward tees. I play from all of the different sets of tees at my local course, depending on my mood that day. When I play from the forward tees, however, I don't take my driver with me - it's my worst club to begin with, so it's a nice reprieve. My best score ever was a 76 from the forward tees, while my landing spots with 3-iron were quite similar to with driver from the tips (where best = 79, and was SO much more mentally exhausting). The difference was playing from fairways rather than chipping out from under pine trees and punching out around oaks.

This is so true. Just yesterday, a couple golfer in front of us playing off the blue tees. Saying their drive a banana ball is an insult to banana. It’s either a push slice or top. They need to play red tees, but egos are too big and holding up everyone behind is not an issues. People, gender is not a determination of which tees you play. Your ABILITY to play is.

Tee selection for 4 tee boxes should be as follows: Tips are for those that are trying to break par. Blues for those trying to break 80. Whites for those trying to break 90. Reds for those trying to break 100. Rename the colours to 'par tees' '80 tees', etc... I also fully support clubs having junior tees for 12 and under if they welcome those ages on the course, but for the other tees, let's get rid of the "ladies/seniors" tee stigma.

With the WHS you can play any tee you want. The system will adjust your playing handicap to suit the actual course based on what tee you have chosen and the slope/course rating. In Sweden, we have moved away from the coloured tees to take away the labels of "Ladies tee" and "Senior tee". Now they are all numbered based on the length of the course. So a course playing 6200, 5800, 5200 and 4700 meters, will have tees called 62, 58, 52 and 47.
@georgesealy47063 жыл бұрын
I like playing farther back because I better focus on what I am doing. Many times I have hit the ball farther out on the hole from the back tee than from the regular tee. I also get a lot more satisfaction parring a hole from the back tee. I know I had to hit good shots all around to get it done. It also helps when I play with guys from the standard tees. Many players get stressed out once they are more than 150 yards from the green for their second shot, but not me.
@travisbrown18933 жыл бұрын
I heard from someone at my home track that you take your average drive (245yds) and multiply it by 28 and that will give you the total yardage of the course and what tees you should play (6860yds). It sounded legit when he was explaining it.
@richardtoms91613 жыл бұрын
The PGA Pro at our course tells us that the correct way to pick what tee to play from is that if you regularly score net par or just either side of par you are playing from the right tee. If for example you are regularly 10 over net par you should move up a set and conversely going well under net par you should move back.
@robertharper8743 жыл бұрын
Love this because I played with some friends from the forward tees and never could break 80 . I couldn't shape the ball good off the tee and therefore I couldn't make the dog legs on the course. Then one day a friend ask me to play golf and we played from the back tees. All of the sudden the fairway got wider and the dog legs were great for a straight drive and I didn't have to worry about shot shape. I end up shooting a 78 with a triple and two doubles , so YES which tees YOU play from is important
@karlmilne64463 жыл бұрын
Funny I would think on most courses i have played the forward tees are easier because I wouldn’t have to hit it as far to get to the dog leg which means I wouldn’t always need to worry about shot shape or which side of the fairway to play. For instance at the curse I play a lot on the 3rd hole I need to keep my ball to the left from the whites because I most likely will have trees blocking me if I play to the right. Where on the forward tees I only gain maybe 20 or thirty yards but because of those yards I can get it past the dog leg so even if the ball is little to right I hit past where the trees would get in my way.

Being off 31.5 I prefer playing off the reds, as I feel under less pressure when I make bad shots, some tee shots off yellow and white need a 150+ carry, just gets a little awkward when I can catch a big drive on the reds, oh he is a bandit, but I am trying to break 100, what I would like to see is an official ruling to stop the stigma. So above a 25 handicap you play off reds, 24 to 10 you play off yellows, 9 below whites and 60+ in age reds, as reduced power, let’s get rid of the reds as lady’s tees, make the game easier for the high handicap player.
@Andrew_3823 жыл бұрын
Handicap has nothing to do with the tees you should play. My dad is 65 and plays the senior tees, I’m 24 and play from the backs he hits driver ~230, I hit driver ~285. We hit almost the same clubs into greens this way. He would still be a lower handicap then me by a couple strokes a round tho.

At Wychwood Park in Cheshire the tees are not colour coded any longer but are identified by the slope rating, so forward tees (previously red) are 132, with other tees 138 (yellow), 148 (white) and 151(blue). Females only play off the 132s and have different and slope course ratings to males. The idea behind this is to remove any perceived stigma associated with the forward tees.

You have put your finger on the problem, Red/forward tees are nearly always named 'Ladies Tee'. So blokes, even old blokes like me, are embarrassed to play off them. In reality beginners and elderly players like myself would probably enjoy playing even more if we used the 'Forward Tees' instead of struggling off the Blue, Whites and Yellows. If every club abandoned the term 'Ladies tee' and just used the colour and encouraged more players to use forward tees for social, then golf more players would get more pleasure from playing.
