Black Like Me is a good book. The situation was not a historical equivalent to "White Chicks". It wasnt drag. It was an honest curiousity about how black people lived and were treated. He made a lot of white people uncomfortable by daring to consider that racism was a real thing. He skin pigment was increased to the point where no one, black or white, questioned if he was born with that skin tone. He was treated like a black man would have been treated and it opened his eyes. He did still have white features, but I doubt that mattered to the white people he encountered. That would have meant recognizing him as a human being.
