I think Joe's apparent "likability" is one of the strongest points of the show. Because it also makes it clear that we SHOUDLN'T like him, and stop giving him excuses. It's hard sometimes, which forces us to think about our own behavior. Cause we still keep excusing countless creeps and murderers. Real ones don't look like obvious bad guys, they can be charming and do good things, that's why they're not all caught right away. But they really made a point at calling out Joe's emotionally manipulative behavior by several characters, to make sure the audience could recognize certain alarming signs. I liked that.

I find the fantasy of the villain very fascinating. People love Loki, a mass murderer, and it’s ok, but when they like Joe it’s suddenly this absolutely disgusting thing. I try not to shame people for their fantasies because deep down they know that in the real world- the characters are terrible. And I also love that the show makes the villain the main character and a charming person, whereas the other characters (ESPECIALLY in season 1) are absolutely TERRIBLE obnoxious lousy people.

I feel like most people with common sense understand that we still shouldn’t like Joe. I don’t think the show is trying to “make Joe a better person”, I feel like they were just trying to make him more complex?? The whole reason I liked this season is because of all the internal conflict and complexities Joe had. But obviously I still don’t LIKE him

Yes yes yes! This review is so on point. I felt the exact same emotions watching the show. Didn't know there was a second book. But I won't be wasting my time reading it lol since Iv seen your review now. The ending made me want to scream they left a cliff hanger of Joe with the neighbor just to make another season 🤦🤷. How can Joe still not get caught serial psycho killer! More reviews like this please candidly open and honest love it 😆

I have a crackpot theory that the neighbor he was spying on had something to do with his mom. Just because they went really heavy on his backstory in season two.

One of the biggest problems I had with this season was they made it seem like joe thought of ending up with love as a sort of punishment and that’s not at all like anything in the book. Even when love finds out everything about joe minus him trying to kill forty and accepts him and even helps him get the old evidence that’s been haunting him the whole time. I actually liked the second book not as much as YOU because the creep factor is gone, but you can’t really have a bunch of books told in that way or they’d all basically be the same story. However I liked that they made it even more obvious how bad of a person he really is in the second book. Hopefully the next season will go back in that direction rather than trying to make joe seem like a messed up good guy that had a bad past and is now trapped with love kinda vibe they had at the end of the season there

yesss exactly this! like love was like oh you killed people? it's ok I still love you

YES! THANK YOU! I don't understand the Joe sympathizers out there. People who actually like him (and aren't just joking), say he just has a lot of passion and loves deeply. Even some saying "murder aside, he's a good guy." Um. WHAT?! Even without the murder, he's a pathological liar, manipulator, emotional/mental abuser and a stalker. Penn Badgley has come out multiple times to say you're not supposed to like his character.

Agreed! I kept yelling at the TV "please get caught" I want him to be caught sooo bad, but my husband sympathizes with him and excuses some of his actions. I don't understand but the different perspectives are interesting lol.

I was shocked by how different the show was than the book but I wasn’t too mad about it. HOWEVER, I didn’t like Joe’s character change. I feel like in season 1 and book one he was the “hate to love” guy that was mysterious and off the grid and didn’t fall into the social life of people and didn’t have social media and loved books. I loved the New York and bookstore vibes. I hated how in season 2 and book 2 it was all LA, hip, social media, parties, etc. Joe in season 2 book 2 just seemed shallow I guess and in season 1 he seemed genuine but just psycho 😂 If any of that makes sense ??

I think season 2 kept the character of joe the same, just with him wanting to change and be a better person more. I think it showed that as much as he wanted to change, he would still resort to the same methods even if he believed his intentions were good or better than season 1. I think both seasons showed him as having a twisted delusional logic for his actions, and I don’t think his “coldness” was portrayed much differently in season 2. In both seasons they showed his moments of pure selfishness and manipulation. I think the point of Love being a killer was to show that although Joe had faults and he knew it, his perfect idolized woman did not. So when Love reveals her faults are the same as Joes, he doesn’t like it because he wants his woman to be better than him, not the same. Also, I really appreciated Love’s back story. It really showed why she was the person she is and how much she had to overcome. I think it made her even more likable to Joe and helped him understand her, and her relationship with Forty. It also connected to his own troubled childhood with his parents and I think it made Love relate to him further and solidify his feelings for her. I didn’t read the book, but I didn’t mind the change to make Joe more like able. I think deep down we were all liking Joe because we were rooting for him to change... even if that meant a few more mistakes(kills) along the way haha!

Hi. If you remember in the book Love was hinted at being a psychopath when they talked about her brother's dog being killed. I was not surprised at all when they made her be an actual person killer. I think it will show she killed her first husband too. Looking forward to the next book/show

Really liked this review. I didn't read the second book but watched the series but still felt the same as you did in terms of Joe being likeable and how he will never change. Now that I know the different parallels from book to show for season 2 it doesn't seem as crazy as I initially thought especially how book 2 ended. I'm interested to see when Joe's story will end but I'll continue the show until it does.

As a person that never read the book (I didn’t even know there’s a book two ) I really liked the show and season two OMG, loved. Crazy meets crazy 😜 but I definitely don’t feel joe is redeemable I still see him as a crazy mother ******. I think the reason they tried to humanized joe in season two is to mess with the viewers head, I mean the whole concept is crazy and I think it was just another way of messing with the viewer’s head by getting the viewer to say “What the... why am I rooting for this guy? Why am I liking him?” I’m sure if I would have read the book my feelings would have been very much like yours but I kinda had a feeling they were going to make the show very different so I just decided to go with the show only.

I DNF’d the book as i found it to be boring. I absolutely loved the first book and tv show. The second series I found to be very weak in comparison and just totally ridiculous at times and completely unbelievable. Season 1/ book 1 was brilliant I think they should have just left it there. 🤷♀️

Amy Adam was the alias that candace told forty was her name...

yes but in the book amy adam was the name of the girlfriend joe had at the beginning. it's the whole reason he moved to l.a was to find her. since they didn't put amy adam in the show they made candace use that name

About the character's "likeability" in the show compared to the book, maybe it's because the actor can't physically act that horrible? Lol.
